For me it was definitely Black & White; fun for the first few hours, but it got boring. Fireball, gain village, repeat.

Mass Effect, Halo 2, Prince of Persia (second one, can't remember the name). GTA4 as well.

Mass Effect wasn't the biggest by far, but had many flaws and was much less than what I was expecting. That being said, I'm enjoying the sequel much more..

Prince of Persia The two Thrones. I thought it would be fun like God of War, but it was quite boring to be honest.

assassins creed was a huge letdown. i was having a huge craving for a next gen stealth game, the mechanics they showed off looked solid, and the graphics looked solid. sadly, each of those was turned on its head upon release. the stealth was poorly implemented, the combat came down to one easy move and the free running just wasnt able to carry the game with such a bad mission structure in the cites and a lacking overworld design, and the graphics were plagued by freezes and misloads early on and the art design featured a seemingly arbitrary use of color. it was just one of those games that felt so mechanical. its like ubisoft had a recipe they stuck to unflinchingly, and nobody took any joy in the creation.

Heroes of Might and Magic IV. After the mind-meltingly awesome Heroes III, New World Computing offered an unbelievably flawed and uninspired sequel. Few good ideas aside, absolutely nothing felt right about this game.

Other notable mentions include BioShock, Mass Effect, Spore, F.E.A.R. 2, Knights of the Old Republic II, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.

I'd have to say Assassins Creed, It was like one of the first games I got for my PS3 I'd looked forward to it but I found it repetative and highly over rated. never even finished it.

Assassins Creed: Beautiful, great concept, utterly boring after 3 hours. But god they made up for it with ACII. GTAIV: Can't really put a finger on it, but I can't get into GTAIV. Still haven't even come close to finishing it, after finishing GTA SA several times.

That's my favorite game. Well, different tastes, I suppose. And I agree with Gears of War 2. And my friend likes Prince of Persia, I don't see why. Assassin's Creed... it was fun killing people for a bit, but it got boring and repetitive.

Oh, and Red Alert 3 for XBox 360. It got praise... but the controls are terrible and inconvenient, the camera doesn't go in far enough so you can see hardly any action, and the campaigns get repetitive.

Yeah, a lot of the time "biggest dissapointment" is about a game that is good, but overhyped. I mean, wasn't Halo 3 supposed to be the last word in FPSs? The ending left a lot to be desired, and, frankly, it was the same as Halo 1 and 2; carbon-copied corriders, one after another. A good game, but people had such high expectations it was bound to be a let-down.

Assassins Creed: It sounded really good until I was doing the same thing over and over again.

Far Cry 2: The first game amazed me. I had to agree with GameSpots review on Far Cry, it was the best shooter since Half-Life. Because of that, I thought Far Cry 2 would be just as good. It wasn't. It was buggy and the multiplayer wasn't really fun.

FFVII, as I was around friends who played it on release and have since been obsessed, while I played it around 2006. The story didn't interest me all that much, I wasn't a fan of most of the party members and I've never liked the ATB system. I still like it, just got way too overhyped before playing it for the first time.

Eternal Sonata - Once again I enjoyed it, but found the battle system too shallow for my tastes.

FFT. I played this about a month ago, but got overhyped again. I liked it, but prefer the Disgaea series for combat by far.

Fable.

I was under the impression that it would be a big open world deal.

Not even close.

It was actually the last game I pre-ordered. That was the end of pre-ordering for me.

For me the biggest disappointments have been Halo 3 ,Resident Evil 5, Halo 2, and Fable 2. I had enjoyed the other titles in the listed franchises ( except Fable 1 that to was disappointing) , but I was thoroughly disappointed with their sequels .

There's a couple that spring to mind.

GTA San Andreas. I had some fun with III and VC, and i read all these reviews about how much better SA was... And now all I can say is those review were all just hype. The additions to the game were horrible and it just wasn't any fun to play.

And Okami. Boring story, too much text, and the battles weren't great. I don't know why it gets so much praise.

Halo 2, and GTA 4, are definitely up there on my list. But the most disappointing game for me this generation was MGS4 on the PS3. It got such good reviews that I was really expecting something much more amazing.

I had such high hopes for that game.

It was still decent, but for the wrong reasons. I want my San Andreas sandbox with RPG elements in it back.

edit: RPG elements which does not solely revolve around the use of (or lack of same) your cellularphone.

Its all related to the hype. One was mass effect and fable, i thought those games will be huge and masterpiece but in comparison with oblivion or fallout 3 they were both pretty much less than promised for their ratings. Same goes for gta iv, san andreas was superior. Oh crysis, so many ratitns, yet i did not like the game!!

Indeed. Gameplay-wise it's a great game, but the presentation failed. I was hoping for a wacky humourous plot, not some boring mmorpg-like quest-after-quest trash.

Besides that I'm joining the "Disappointed-in-MGS4"-branch. It just didn't come close to the quality of it's prequels. Especialy the recycled boss fights left me disappointed. The fight with Whatshername Wolf for example just was a trashy version of the duel with The End in MGS3.

Wow. One of the two or three greatest and most satisfying games I've ever played. I'm surprised we're so far off on that one.

MGS4 was awful when compared to other entries in the series due to its crappy story. And it wasn't all that great of a game, either -- short and unremarkable byTPS standards, with unlimited ammo and recycled boss fights from previous games sucking all the discovery, challenge, and strategy out of play.

This game killed the series for me.

Thats one way to see it. But when i played mgs3 i hated the story in that game. It made no sense at all, i had so many questions that were all answered on mgs4, so i wouldnt say it has such a bad story. Also the gameplay was more complex with more tricks and thus was more fun!!

Grand Theft Auto hasn't been awesome since Vice City. I use this anecdote often. Why is it when I am chasing after someone in a Turismo (the Ferarri/Porsche thing) and they are in some Blista (like a Civic hatchback if I remember right), how the hell do they outrun and outsteer me in a game that is going for a more realistic approach? It's like the fun was sucked out of the gameplay and some Gran Turismo driving simulator that doesn't follow it's own rules was thrown in. Saints Row is way better now.

I loved 1 & 3 too. The cutscenes took some getting used to, but I thought most were necessary. As to the story, the only way it worked for me, was the MGS Database Download. I spent hours looking at the database, even during the game when I didn't quite get the storyline. Too much work? Maybe, but I loved the series so much I wanted some closure, and MGS4 did it for me.
