The Pyro update will be available on Thursday complete with 3 unlockable weapons and 35 achievements. Meet the Sniper video will be released sometime today and finally, everyone will be able to play Team Fortress 2 for free this whole weekend.

For starters, you can expect a "significant improvement" for the bog-standard flamethrower. Pressing the alternate fire button now produces a gust of compressed air that sends enemies flying and even redirects hostile projectiles.

So yes, you will be able to turn rockets back on their launchers, get blazing victims away from you pronto, and keep enemy medics away from their patients.

The Pyro also gets a trio of weapons to unlock by earning cIass achievements.

Up first is the Flare Gun, which replaces the shotgun and lets you set your enemies on fire from far away - as long as you can handle the tricky aiming. Useful for dealing with Snipers and Engineers, we're told.

Next is a modified flamethrower called the Backburner. This deals critical hits when ever you toast an enemy who has their back turned on you. It forfeits the compressed blast ability but bumps your health up by fifty points as a trade off.

Last but not least is the Axtinguisher. This is an axe, unsurprisingly, and it performs critical hits on any enemy who is on fire. Chop chop. But it will also be significantly weaker against those not ablaze. Combine with Pyro friend or Flare Gun for massive damage.

In total there will be 35 achievements to unlock, and they vary from finishing off another enemy lit-up by another Pyro, to igniting a Soldier while he's in mid-air after performing a rocket jump.

• Next of Kindling: Ignite an enemy, and the Medic healing him.
• Second Degree Burn: Kill a burning enemy who was ignited by another Pyro.
• Weenie Roast: Have 2 enemy Scouts on fire at the same time.
• Baptism by Fire: Force 10 burning enemies to jump into water.
• Fire and Forget: Kill 15 players while you're dead.
• I Fry: Ignite 10 disguised Spies.
• OMGWTFBBQ: Kill an enemy with a taunt.
• Got A Light?: Ignite an enemy Spy while he's flicking a cigarette.
• BarbeQueQ: Cause a dominated player to leave the server.
• Dance Dance Immolation: Kill 3 enemies while they're taunting.
• Hotshot: Kill a Soldier with a reflected critical rocket.
• Firefighter: Kill 500 enemies.
• Fire Chief: Kill 1000 enemies
• Attention Getter: Ignite 100 enemies with the flare gun.
• Pyromancer: Do 1 million points of total fire damage.
• Hot Potato: Reflect 100 projectiles with your compressed air blast.
• Combined Fire: Use your shotgun to finish off 20 players you've ignited.
• Firewall: Ignite 5 Spies who have a sapper on a friendly building.
• Cooking the Books: Ignite 5 enemies carrying your intelligence.
• Spontaneous Combustion: Ignite 10 cloaked Spies.
• Trailblazer: Ignite 10 enemies that have recently used a teleporter.
• Camp Fire: Kill 3 enemies in a row, all within the same area.
• Lumberjack: Kill 3 people with your axe in one life.
• Clearcutter: Kill 6 people with your axe in one life.
• Firewatch: Ignite 10 snipers while they are zoomed in.
• Burn Ward: Ignite 3 medics that are ready to deploy an Uber-charge.
• Makin' Bacon: Kill 50 Heavies with your flamethrower.
• Plan B: Kill 10 enemies while you're both underwater.
• Pyrotechnics: Kill 3 enemies in a single uber-charge.
• Arsonist: Destroy 50 Engineer buildings.
• Controlled Burn: Ignite 50 enemies capturing one of your control points.
• Dead Heat: Kill an enemy in the same second that he kills you.
• Pilot Light: Ignite a rocket-jumping Soldier while he's in midair.
• Freezer Burn: Provide enemies with freezecam shots of each of your taunts.

Alongside the Pyro update this Thursday will be two user-created maps. These are a control point map called Fastlane that has multiple indoor and outdoor routes, and a capture the flag map called Turbine, which is clean and straightforward and easy to learn.

Grr....Valve is releasing the new weapons for the classes I don't play. :lol:

I want the Spy weapons to come out...or Demoman.

Hopefully the new weapons will give the Pyro a better chance against most classes in non-close quarters fights.

So frickin' awesome. I love playing as Pyro, but in my opinion, the cIass is underpowered in a lot of situations. It's great for close-quarters combat, but you won't fare well on maps with large open spaces as the shotgun is pretty weak when used on distance. Rockets make Pyros bounce much more than any other cIass. It seems as if this update will make Pyros useful in more situations now.

As for the user-created maps, I haven't played Fastlane, but Turbine is hands down the best TF2 CTF map around - official or otherwise. You can check it out in my very first Team Fortress 2 gameplay video - coincidentally, I was playing as Pyro. :wink:

Holy freaking crap!!! I can't believe those weapons! Pyro is going to be so versatile, deadly, and tricky to deal with now. I'm guessing Valve is trying to balance the pyro, since a lot of people think it's the weakest class. And unlike medic, I think I'll start out with a good percentage of those achievements. Can't wait for Thursday!

By the way, regarding the achievements, I think it's obvious Valve listened to players. Most of these achievements make complete sense and will be unlocked naturally as you just play the game whereas the Medic achievements were full of stupid hard stuff that didn't make any sense with the gameplay itself (ubering Scouts, WTF?).

I just played a nice session and unlocked some Medic achievements:

Group Health
Work with 2 other Medics to deploy 3 simultaneous ÜberCharges.

Play Doctor
In a team with no Medics, be first to switch to Medic after a teammate calls 'Medic!', and then heal 500 health.

Autoclave
Assist in burning 5 enemies with a single ÜberCharge on a Pyro.

Hypocritical Oath
Kill an enemy Spy that you have been healing.

Autopsy Report
Provide an enemy with a freezecam shot of you taunting above their ragdoll.

Milestone 1
Achieve 12 of the achievements in the Medic pack.

I scored the last three achievements all on the same kill. 8)
