By the way: if Tomb Raider counts, so does Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine on the N64.

I didn't say people have to vote for N64 but for the system whose platformers they liked better.

If the N64 has the upper hand in the platformer genre is a subjective matter.

Critics and gamers-alike may agree that it had the upper hand but that is not factual.

One can like whatever he wants.

If I created a thread asking which 5th gen console's fighters they liked best it's not necesairy people would vote the Saturn as the best.

And like I said, I'm not against the likes of Tomb Raider and Castlevania but I do doubt they are good comparisons for the likes of Mario 64, Banjo, Crash and Spyro.

Yoshi's Story is a completely 2D platformer btw.

you never said anything about 3D platformers, you just said platformers.so Yoshi's story is perfectly legitimate and again , Tomb Raider is a platformer , so it can be counted. the fact that it is different from Mario 64 doesn't affect that. and of course not everybody will think the Saturn has the best 2D fighters that gen , even though if people choose inferior versions of sometimes the same games , its very funny and quite hypocritical actually, and no , its not a case of some things being better about the PS1 versions, they are inferior in every way almost all the time.

Of course, I didn't say they have to be 3D.

And since I didn't specify that they have to be "cute" or exclusive in the sense of not appearing on other systems, I guess Tomb Raider could count.

And by the way Saturn wasn't very popular so that may have to do with people liking PS1 versions of 2D fighters over Saturn's.

to be honest thats the only reason why people would pick the PS1 versions , because its not even a mixed bag of good or bad with those versions, unless youre more inclined for the PS1 controller.

It wasn't on N64 though, and it's N64 vs PS1 platformers, so I don't know why Tomb Raider wouldn't count.

Darkman2007

and in fact I would say the PS1 version of Tomb Raider was better then the Saturn one in most ways

I loved Tomb Raider, but it had some of the worst platforming known to man.

The old Tomb Raider games generally feel too stiff today. The total opposite to Mario 64 which still has very responsive controls.

Even as a kid I thought "the jumping sucks." And yes, Mario 64 has aged absolutely beautifully--and this is why the N64 wins this "vs" debate. The Saturn had the best 2D platformers, though.

I don't mind the controls, but then again, I judge games based on when they came out.

Which were those worthy Saturn 2D platformers by the way?

I only know about Rayman and Astral.

you mean Astal :P well , some of them include Gex , Sillhouette Mirage , Earthworm Jim 2 , Tryush Deppy , Pandemonium (3D visuals , but the gameplay was 2D) and Shinbi X (called Shinobi Den elsewhere) as well as Psychic Assassain Torumaru and Super Tempo

as far as 3D ones, you get Croc, Ninpen Manmaru , Burning Rangers and .....actually thats all I can think of for 3D ones, there might be more though, the Saturn had over 500 games released for it, so its very well possible I missed some games.

I forgot to mention Keio Flying Squadron 2 and Symphony of the Night for the 2D platformer section.

the Saturn might not be quite as devoid of quality games as you may have thought :P

who cares, still good games. I couldnt care less if games like Sillhouette Mirage and Pandemonium are also on the PS1, for the simple reason the Saturn versions are better. on the other hand, I would always recommend the PS version of SOTN , as its an overall better version , though to its credit the Saturn one has some extra content.
