N64 platformers are Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Kirby 64, Yoshi's Story, Rocket Robot on Wheels, ect.

PS1 platformers are the Crash series, the Spyro series, Ape Escape, Klonoa, ect.

So, which do you like better? You can also describe why.

I personally like the N64 ones better. They just suit me better.

And by the way, only exclusives count so no multiplats like Rayman 2.

N64, but the PS1 has its share of very good platformers.

Saturn on the other hand, less so , particularly 3D platformers, though it has a few good ones like Burning Rangers, which is arguably my favourite 3D platformer that gen apart from Conker.

The PS1 had some very good platformers, but when you look at mario 64 and what Rare did with Banjo the crown goes to the 64!

I had both but I preferred my N64. Rare was whoopin' ass when it came to making games back then.

Zickackly. I still get pissed off whenever I think about the fate of Rare as Microsoft's kiddy-game company. Nintendo should have done more to keep them around.

N64 had more platformers, but I personally like the PS1 platformers slightly better. Spyro, Crash, and Rayman 1, wow... great games.

Well I haven't played a ton of platofrmers on either system, but N64 had Super Mario 64, so it wins by default. Although, I remember playing a Spyro game at my cousin's house, and it was pretty good.

I just can't get into the N64 platformers too much. And I'm a HUGE fan of the 2d Mario and Donkey Kong games. So for me, I prefer the PSX platformers. Crash Bandicoot 1 & 2, Gex, the original Spyro, and Pac-Man World are fantastic games. And another overlooked, underated platformer I loved from PSX's earlys was Spider.

Easily N64. Banjo and DK64 are the best platformers I've ever played by far.

I personally think the only PS1 platformer that can compare to Mario 64 is Spyro. Then again PS1 may have the edge when it comes to "2.5D" platformers.

well, I have Pandemonium on the Saturn (which actually looks a little nicer on the Saturn due to a better colour pallete) and its not that good, its ok but gets a bit boring fairly quickly the crash series on the other hand is very good.

PS1, Spyro was my childhood (Only the original three; Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer AKA Ripto's Rage, and Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon), and I will never forget it's excellent level design and life filled environments. Although Crash Bandicoot and the rest of the PS1 platformers have nothing on Mario.

No competition. N64 by FAR. I thought Spyro stunk, big time. I like Crash, but it isn't exactly a 3D platformer--or it is, and I'm thinking 3D in the vein of Mario 64.

Heirren

Graphically it is but gameplay wise it's more "2.5D".

I have to say PS1. Crash, Spyro, Gex, and gawd i'm glad at least the latter i mentioned was put out of his misery before my childhood gaming went to hell. I should also add I had an N64 and all those goodies as well, all great games mentioned in this thread in their own right.

by "everything else" you mean the other 2 gex games , when as far as I can see, are not considerd to be as good as the first. of course Ive never played the other 2, but it seems to be fashionable these days for people to talk about things they know nothing about ......

I never understood what's so good on Gex. I always though the first one was just a Yoshi's Island copy for the 32-bit consoles while the 3D ones were sub-par. Or was that just the N64 ports?

Eitherway, by no means outstanding platformers imo.

I liked the original Gex, though at the same time it was outdone by Rayman and a few others too. coincidentally I recently got Gex for the 3DO , didn't play it for years, but its still a good game.

no, Im talking about the fact that the original game was on the 3D0, Sega Saturn, and PC as well as the PS1. :P

and yeah they were just generic 3D platformers, they had a bit of good humour though.

not really, just because its not Mario 64 , doesnt mean its not a platformer. though yes , it wasn;t an exclusive and in fact it was on the Saturn first.

Well I guess it could count in this context but I was comparing the "cute" (mascot-driven) platformers anyway. Games like Castlevania and Tomb Radier are not really comparable to Mario, Crash and Spyro.

but then youre creating a situation where you know the N64 is going to have the upper hand , because the Rare platformers alone could win on that front. might as well post a thread asking "so which has the better 2D fighting games out of those 3 systems that era?" , as its quite obvious which console is going to have the upper hand. and Wikipedia can say what it likes, its a platformer with shooting and puzzle solving, saying otherwise is like saying Mario 64 is not a platformer because you can get Mario to punch and kick. now of course just like I would count the likes of Tomb Raider and SOTN as platformers , means I can also count the likes of Yoshi's story and Mischief Makers on the N64.

I didn't say people have to vote for N64 but for the system whose platformers they liked better.

If the N64 has the upper hand in the platformer genre is a subjective matter.

Critics and gamers-alike may agree that it had the upper hand but that is not factual.

One can like whatever he wants.

If I created a thread asking which 5th gen console's fighters they liked best it's not necesairy people would vote the Saturn as the best.

And like I said, I'm not against the likes of Tomb Raider and Castlevania but I do doubt they are good comparisons for the likes of Mario 64, Banjo, Crash and Spyro.

Yoshi's Story is a completely 2D platformer btw.

Yoshi's Story is a completely 2D platformer btw.

you never said anything about 3D platformers, you just said platformers.so Yoshi's story is perfectly legitimate and again , Tomb Raider is a platformer , so it can be counted. the fact that it is different from Mario 64 doesn't affect that. and of course not everybody will think the Saturn has the best 2D fighters that gen , even though if people choose inferior versions of sometimes the same games , its very funny and quite hypocritical actually, and no , its not a case of some things being better about the PS1 versions, they are inferior in every way almost all the time.

[QUOTE="Darkman2007"] but then youre creating a situation where you know the N64 is going to have the upper hand , because the Rare platformers alone could win on that front. might as well post a thread asking "so which has the better 2D fighting games out of those 3 systems that era?" , as its quite obvious which console is going to have the upper hand. and Wikipedia can say what it likes, its a platformer with shooting and puzzle solving, saying otherwise is like saying Mario 64 is not a platformer because you can get Mario to punch and kick. now of course just like I would count the likes of Tomb Raider and SOTN as platformers , means I can also count the likes of Yoshi's story and Mischief Makers on the N64.Darkman2007

I didn't say people have to vote for N64 but for the system whose platformers they liked better.

If the N64 has the upper hand in the platformer genre is a subjective matter.

Of course, I didn't say they have to be 3D.

And since I didn't specify that they have to be "cute" or exclusive in the sense of not appearing on other systems, I guess Tomb Raider could count.

And by the way Saturn wasn't very popular so that may have to do with people liking PS1 versions of 2D fighters over Saturn's.
