I joined this forum just to ask this question. Which cover embodies the thrill of the game most? Which ones give you goosebumps from memories of the game? Super Mario Galaxy 2 led me to ask the question, I saw the cover for it and couldn't believe how awesome it was, I hope it comes in a different colored case like NSMBW did.

To be honest, I go mad for any collectors edition steelbook case, for the look and feel.

Hmm... Epic is a pretty strong work. I love the cover art for Mortal Kombat II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, but I don't think they really have any qualities that would make me call them "epic."

I guess in terms of being Epic, I would go for Moonwalker.

Minimalist covers always strike a chord with me, so I really like a lot of SquareEnix's covers from over the years, especially when it's JUST the game logo on a white background. That can be pretty epic. Metal Gear Solid did a great job of working that motif, too. Final Fantasy XII had a great collector's cover, too bad the game itself was...err...we'll not get into that. We'll just say it was a case of the box art being infinitely more epic than the game contained within. The original Grandia also had a really good one, if you understand the timing. We were fresh off of Final Fantasy VII and VIII, the whole sci-fi movement in the RPG genre was starting to hit full stride, and here was a cover that exemplified the strictly fantasy side of RPGs that was a very welcome sight after the previous couple years. Tekken 3 almost nailed it, if they had pulled Jin from the cover entirely, and then just had the foil logo be the entire cover, it would've been perfect. Final Fantasy XIII was similar, in that a random picture of Lightning looked a bit awkward on the minimalist background, and the foil was a nice touch that would've made a logo-only cover absolutely perfect.

Yeah the red foil on Metal Gear Solid was actually one of the first of that kind that I had ever seen. That put the entire epic nature and the phenomenon of this game and its franchise into that amazing cover.

YES! This had the same effect as those other minimalist covers. Believe it or not, I JUST purchased and finished this game three months ago. Never had an N64 and my girlfriend broke out hers and her collection of classics. Best 30 hours playing a game in a looong time XD

calvinsora

I came into this thread with the sole intention of posting this cover.

A decade and a half later and I still don't get what the hell I'm looking at, but it's hilarious. There are game's that I consider timeless and even games I played last week for which I couldn't even tell you what was on the cover. As old as this game is, I've never forgotten the old geezer with the banjo with a spaceship in the background and I've never even played the game. That's got to be the best marketing ever.

I think he means epic as in good not epic as in... well, epic :). Don't you know it's the current generation's buzz word? Everything good is apparently epic. Makes it hard to describe an epic movie or game as people respond with "but that was crap". lol

Oh yeah, the question. For me it's a recent one, Heavy Rain. Interesting cover and more meaningful once you've played the game and learnt about all the characters. I especially love the haunted look in Ethan's eyes, the calculating look in Jayden's, the determined stance of Shelby and... well a nice bodied women in a singlet covered with rain water always helps a front cover. Love how it's done in B&W with only the origami figure in color.
For those that have completed the game Shelby has an ashamed/dissapointed yet determined look on his face. Awesome portrayal alongside the other characters
I loved this game and every time I look at the cover I'm taken back into that world.

I completely agree with what you have said. The cover of the video games actually speak their own story and is the most influencing parameter when we buy a game. Talking of that cannot stop myself from remembering a fabulous game cover for PS ---Little Big Planet. The cover has an immaculate blend of gorgeous hand-made elements with controlled bursts of color.

I also wish that Heavy Rain just had one of the characters with a similar face and the origami in the same place. Wasn't the original cover supposed to be kind of like that?

There were a few covers. E.g.

The cover art that most reminds me of jsut how big this game was and how great the story was is the one I posted. In Aus I actually received the brown cover with the origami in the rain...boring if you ask me.

Pfft, how'd I forget that one. There's only a handful that do it on next-gen systems, Gears 2 did it better then the first, but definitely agreed upon.
