a terrible game. Discuss

I didn't like it, that's for sure.
I wouldn't call it terrible though, it just for me reflected what it is often the most irritating of 3rd person adventure game's features: Escort missions.
More often than not the AI does something stupid or doesn't do what you want it to do (in general) and just makes the game/level that much harder through no fault of your own. I didn't like the idea of a whole game based on this mechanic, and the few plays i had when i took a chance with it did nothing to dispell that complaint.
I don't have it and i don't want it.
I liked it back when it first came out, there was some interesting art and design, but I hold it no higher than anything else, with a GENEROUS helping of "**** YOU" for the constant escort nature of the game which is ALWAYS something that I hate unconditionally, in ANY title - I agree with Barbaric on that point, whole-heartedly.
The worship "Team Ico" gets is nauseating, as well. Two games in two decades, what's the big hairy deal? The "romantic" leanings of their games have been out-performed by a dozen titles I could name off the top of my head, games where the characters touched my heart a TON more than "Ico" or "Shadow" have... I will never understand...
But then, there are pastey over-weight never-kissed-a-girl dudes who wet themselves at a presentation of FF music or cry at the announcement of a new "Zelda" game, so... I guess it could always be WORSE. Team Ico worshippers aren't THAT bad, at least.
But for-realz... I'm actually looking forward to the possibility of "Guardian" getting cancelled. Every time it gets rumored on the Net, there is a great outcry of sorrow, tearing of t-shirts, gnashing of un-brushed teeth. I just lauuuuugh & laugh at that crap...

Describes me perfectly, I'm sad to say.
Back on topic, I think Ico is glorious. I revisited it recently in shiny new HD form and it has lost none of its lustre.

Doesn't describe me at all, though it's not surprising that a CoD gamer would make that assumption lol. It's a great game. It obviously won't hold the attention of people that need to see nothing but bright flashes and spraying blood, but it nails the atmosphere and puzzles very well.Doesn't describe me at all, though it's not surprising that a CoD gamer would make that assumption lol. "LOLZ" - Hey Mr Wise-Ass, guess what? I play FF games, DragonQuest games, old-school Arcade, Katamari, Flight Sims, Driving games, Puzzle games... I've got more diversity in my shoe laces than you have in your entire gaming library I'm CERTAIN...
YOU can take YOUR assumptions and stick 'em. I apologize if my JOKE landed on people too sensitive to read a post in a VIDEO GAME FORUM with a little strength of conviction for their own interests not to get overly butt-hurt... But in the end, it's priggish punks like you who make this world so much less interesting. Not Call of Duty.
See ya.
If they got rid of the whole you have to stay with yorda or else she'll be kidnapped into a black hole mechanic I could live with the other flaws but this is just too frustrating.
other complaints I have are the overly simplistic combat and the fact that not only is Yorda close to brain dead but all she does is serve as a burden throughout the enitre game. I might have considered this game good in like 1996 or something but now......................... SIGH. I really wanted to like the game as SotC is one of my all time favorites.
The one thing I do like is seeing the links with Shadow of the Collosus.
As for the guy who said I hope the last guardian gets cancelled, I was having similar thoughts while playing it.

You are being a wise ass too. Relax.ICO is a great game :)
Shadow of Colossus is a terrible game, got insanely bored after an hour. Flame me too if you want :P
Why do you find it terrible/boring? Is it because of the "searching for the colossi" sections?ICO is a great game :)

[QUOTE="rwallacefan"]Why do you find it terrible/boring? Is it because of the "searching for the colossi" sections? The searching for the colossi got really annoying and plus there's nothing to do except that, UNLESS I am missing something, maybe I'll buy the collection since it's only 19.99 now :)ICO is a great game :)

Ico was alright, I enjoyed it more than Shadow of the Collosus but I felt let down by both games considering the hype they get online.
The worst bit about Ico? Some of the combat sections, but at least the camera would behave itself better than in SoTC which was more frustrating the fun/epic/atmospheric. Bad camera really killed the game for me.
As much as I tried I could never get into Ico. I did enjoy SotC for a bit, then it did not keep my interest after like the 5th or so Collossi and I never picked it back up since.
Maybe I'll give them both a shot again over the holiday break.
I tread carefully because of my criticism of Ico. But Shadow of the Colossus wasn't just the game itself, it was also how it made you feel. It changed your perceptions of what you were doing as time went by (providing you didn't get bored of twanging arrows at lizards and galloping around).
I have no intention of spoiling the game for those yet to play it but for those who immerse themselves in the experience of playing a game, something happens at Colossus 5 (for me), which is only the smallest of hints. Then is revisited a couple of kills later, and of course much more around the conclusion.
But you have to be paying attention, and i guess you have to care too. If the game is really dull for you after finishing-off 3 Colossi then you're probably going to miss the psychology beneath the surface anyway.

I personally enjoy the game aspect of it as well, though again this isn't for everybody. Dashing along the backs of creatures looking for some fur to hold on to before it throws you off is quite exhilerating in itself!

ico is one of the biggest pieces of beuaity and art. the ending is more saddening and moving than you could imagine. ico shows the purest art of stirytelling by telling a story so intense with almost no dailogue. no movie, no game can do that like ico did. same with shadow of the colossus, although less.

my god. the whole concept of the game has gone totally beside you. no point in further discussing with you really. do you even know why the girl is the way she is? and also did you ever manage to open those special doors without the girl? no, you need her! and you love her, the boy is attached to her and that is sheer beauty, how also in shadow of the colossus you felt horrible when your horse "died" and I even hate horses. you probably like shadow of the colossus only for fighting the colossi, then again I can say the essence of the game has gone missing on you there as well.

1st and foremost Ico is a game and as a game it is not very good.
as for the part you bolded I'm specifically talking about when you have to leave her in a different area and go off on your own but then after a few minutes you hear her gasp and you gotta drop everything you're doing and go save her.
if you like the story and atmosphere that's fine but I feel you're over exaggerating alot. There's not much development between them outside of hey we need to get out of here until close to the end and even then its not all that special. I didn't grow attached to her in the slightest and if they had made her less annoying in gameplay then maybe I might have.
but w/e different strokes
then it's not your game. but don't rate it then. it's like saying I hate chocolate when I've never had it. same as this where the story has gone totally above your head, but there's a reason this game got great ratings and that is that many people have experienced it that way.

AsadMahdi59There's plenty development of their bond without the need of cutscenes shoving it down your throat. It's very well served through the gameplay, you really need her and she really needs you to get through everything.

Fair enough, but nothing went over my head.
Both the games (ICO, SotC) are two unique game experiences and as such have to be considered, in good and in bad terms, nuff said

I really liked it. Shadow of the Colossus was a way better game, but comparing the two beyond sharing the same development team is a little hard to do. I guess I'd say it's an 8/10 game overall.
