Game series that truly shouldn't have ended?

There are many game series today that we've heard of for a long time, some of us since we've been born or started gaming. Mario and Sonic are timeless and won't be going away any time soon, in fact the very thought of that is just crazy.

However, not all game series are as successful of course. Companies shut down, series die since they can't make profits etc.

Sometimes we as loyal fans who loved the games so much don't understand how or why these beloved game series would ever fade away. Sometimes things change and companies make mistakes. Many times crew members are switched, fired, quit, or teams are bought out, which may be the case.

What are game series that you loved, but didn't make it to today and wished they still continued them so you could be playing the sequels you secretly long for?

The Tomba games were great and very underrated when they first released.

-Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series. I guess it's possible that there could be another one, but it's been over 7 years since the last one.

Mercenaries

Age of Empires. I was really hoping I could play Age of Mythology 2 some day, but since Ensemble Studios is no more, it looks like that will never happen.

Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Republic Commando, Jak & Daxter.

I think its sad that in the minds of the majority of gamers franchises and characters are more important than the people who make them. If a talented developer wants to make something original rather than a sequel I've got no problem with that (Catherine has me just as excited as Persona 5 would because its the developers who make the Persona games great, not the Persona name).CarnageHeart

I don't think it's necessarily a matter of valuing franchises over the creators doing something new, but rather good or promising franchises that were cut short for various reasons (often times reasons beyond the developer's control). One example is the Legacy of Kain series, which lingers in perpetual limbo without a proper conclusion while the developing team is tasked with rehasing the Tomb Raider franchise.

I actually agree with this guy. Just have a look at crash Bandiccot, the games were fantastic in the PS1 times, but once ND (or was it Sonys? Dunno xD) sold the IP the PS2 games were horrible ^^

Not sure about Sony, but Naughty Dog never held the rights to the Crash Bandicoot franchise, they were simply hired to develop it for awhile.

Tombi, I'd settle for a PSN re-release of the first game.

Knights of The Old Republic. I'd love a 3rd title in the series. If someone wants to write that SW: The Old Republic is designed to be KoTOR 3,4,5 etc. There's going to be a bloodshed I kid you not:P

Monolith's NOLF (No One Lives Forever) series. Why they have abandoned the series in favor of the overlived FEAR series is beyond me. Cate Archer has been calling but Monolith is not answering.

I am sure there is a good amount, but one particular title that comes to mind is Descent. I kinda wished at times that it wouldn't have ended with the third game because I felt there was still more stuff that needed to be covered, and more opportunities with the series that could've been explored more.

Parasite Eve, another Chrono game (next gen), would be nice too.Allicrombie

Champions of Norrath. It makes me sad that this genre has all but died on consoles. Thankfully I game on PC mostly these days and can look forward to Diablo 3.

Metal gear solid, we still have the side stories of the other characters but without Solid Snake I cosider this the end of MGShayabusatan

Star Wars: Battlefront and Crash Bandicoot. These series held amazing games, but I don't think any more games will be made unfortunately :(

Actually, I read in the latest Game Informer that Blizzard is looking for people to work on a Diablo CONSOLE game (though not neccesarily D3).

Also, on topic, any Sega RPG franchises: Phantasy Star (not online), Shining Force, Skies of Arcadia...

Bullfrog Studios (Syndicate, Populous, Dungeon Keeper)

Severance: Blade Of Darkness, THE best hack and slash I have ever played.

X-Wing VS TIE Fighter. A great space combat sim, not enough in the Space Combat genre around right now.

The original Quake story arc should cary on.

Finally, Toejam and Earl.
