Note: use spoiler tags for plot details.

For me, it's Final Fantasy VIII's ending. It's not my favorite game or my favorite game story or even my favorite FF, but I think the ending is so gorgeous and brilliant.

I love everything about it, from Squall's struggle to make it out of compressed time, to the time loop caused by Edea inheriting Ultimecia's powers when she's defeated, to the weird part when Rinoa is all distorted. It's all just so visually interesting and thematically apt.

I don't know. I would have to replay a lot of games to watch the endings again but for now, I would have to give it to Bioshock (good ending).

Hmm...I love the endings of The Last of Us, BioShock (good ending) and BioShock Infinite, Shadow of the Colossus, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Batman: Arkham City, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Red Dead Redemption.

Bioshock & Bioshock Infinite were pretty cool. And I think I'm one of the only few who liked the ending to the Mass Effect series.

I have to be a bit of a fanboy on this one: my favorite are the revelations at the end of Soul Reaver 2.

Before I go on, I would like to say this is just a huge interpretation on my part and may sound very pretentious :)

Even though combat in the final encounter wasn't particularly memorable, everything leading up to it gave it incredible importance, storywise; the fact that you are fighting your sadistical former self whose ideals you just so recently aspired to, in the sanctuary of righteous delusion, standing inside a ouroboros floor mural gives has plenty of subtext and is subtle conclusion to a long character arc, and and opening to further development. That is only a part of the reason, though.

What really makes this ending great for me is the sudden cold revelation that follows shortly after; the fateless soul being finally faced with the horrifying shackles of destiny and the subsequent escape to a grey area of fate, or the "edge of the coin" as referred to in-game. The temporal paradox and the shocker that follows after set the stage for the final search, along with sublime voice acting and atmosphere, make this a perfect ending in my book.

Probably either Bioshock or KOTOR. Maybe Baldur's Gate 2.

Out of all the games I played there is still only a handful that really comes to being great and what I mean by great I mean just super impact of awesome.

Bioshock series (as a big fan of all the games and if you play through them in order. and really look up audio logs to really dig into them they have a wonderful ending at the end of the second DLC)

KOTOR, Spec Ops the Line, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and MGS Snake Eater. KOTOR 2 would have had a great ending if it wasn't cut to ribbons in development.

The more I think about it, maybe i'm desensitised to fiction now but it's hard to make a good ending. Walking Dead had the perfect ending though in recent times, closing a chapter yet leaving it on the perfect cliffhanger.

FF8 ending over FF10 ending really GreySeal? I admit I'm biased because I think FF8 is one of the weakest FF games.

Anyway probably Bioshock Infinite

The one that always, always manages to make me feel like crying from both happiness and sorrow is Majora's Mask. I couldn't think of a more perfect way to end the game than showing how Link helped people throughout the game, including Skull Kid. But it also gave you a glimpse of what was lost due to the Mask. It's the perfect balance of melancholy and joy.

Wind Waker is close to it, though. It's very emotional and sad in a sentimental way. Seeing Ariel tear up always gives me goosebumps.

Mass Effect 2. The ending actually saw the consequences of your choices play out and made it feel like a complete game.

Bioshock 1's good ending was pretty touching. It reminded me of how remaining a good person and not taking the easy way out, despite the wickedness around you, is its own reward.

Bioshock Infinite's ending entertained me quite a bit even though I was overall disappointed with the game.

Assassin's Creed Revelations ending, wrapping up the Ezio and Altair storyline was well done.

I've got to say that I didn't really see anything special about the Mass effect 1 ending. I played it, Shepard said "There's a greater threat coming" and that was about it. although maybe I'm missing something because I didn't think Saren was a particularly amazing villain either. Maybe I just need to replay the game but I was severely underwhelmed by a lot of the original ME. Still a good game but I don't understand the hard on a lot of people have for it.

For me probably Max Payne 2 of Mafia. I'd say Max Payne 2 edges it slightly for tone and writing.

Lol you got me, But ME3's ending did make my body shake too. I mean it had emotions in it. My problem with ending is that; I wished they'd end it NOT where he wakes up in the rubble (Which imo still ends too neatly) but where his team would find him and return to the Normandy, and even honor those who died in the citadel. Would've been more epic this way.

Silent Hill 2, by far. That ending is heart string pulling and extremely deep. You commit suicide by driving into the famous lake with the body of your wife who you came to find in the trunk of the car. Nothing comes close to topping that ending...

Halo 3. That ending was so incredibly deep when I first played through it. But I'd say Portal 2's ending makes a worthy contender.

oh boy that's a toughie... too many to pick a single favorite, but I can list some of my favorites:

Final Fantasy X (as someone above said, so bittersweet... f**k them ruining it in FFX-2)

Mass Effect 3 (though the star-child wasn't my favorite plot twist, the music and feeling that sense of finality was absolutely stunning... plus my choice felt epic)

Metal Gear Solid 4 (this was the first MG game I played, and therefore understood about 40% of the plot... but damn if that last fight wasn't epic)

Demon's Souls (never have I felt such a sense of accomplishment)

Red Dead Redemption

The Last of US

Dead Space (especially realizing that the chapter titles gave away nicole being dead)

I love the ending to Portal 2 and the ending to Halo 2 made me anticipate H3 to the point that a PS3 was never even in consideration for me but I gotta say that my favorite ending is the ending to Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea Part 2

The way that it seamlessly connected Bioshock 1 and 2 to Infinite and Burial at Sea to the beginning of the first Bioshock gave me such an "Ohh my godddd" moment that it takes the cake

To me half of the story lies in it's ending. I don't understand writers who say that it's the journey that's important. The journey will not stick with me but the ending will.

I'm gonna go with Mass Effect 3 only because the game was really hype in 2012 and the ending was the least of my problems, the plot was underwhelming, most of the key choices you did in the first Mass Effect didn't matter and it felt like a middle finger coming from Bioware. If your wondering why I say Mass Effect 3 ending does not bother me, is because the happy ending mod gave me the true closer and ME3 has redeem it's self. [look up ME3 happy ending on youtube]

@Jacanuk: Not every ending has to be some sort of plot twist that completely shatters the entire plot. For me, it all just has to wrap up the story neatly. Doesn't have to be some brand new never-before-seen thing; it just has to end the story well and be satisfying.

That is true but a ending has to be something memorable and not something that doesn't really stand out. And i have yet to have played a game which made me sit back and think wow.

Also i have to agree with "its the journey, not the destination" that's important and here i can mention a lot of games.

Megaman Zero 4. No matter how many times I see Zero die (and he dies A LOT), it's always fun to see him get cut in half or blown to pieces. I have played games with more meaningful endings but, personally I am a simple kind of guy who doesn't try to relate or isn't into the whole "everything must have meaning" hype. I prefer simpler endings like the one I just mentioned. Also, the ending for Final Fight was damn beautiful. Jessica running down the street after Cody, Guy notices that Cody is not stopping to talk to her so, what does Guy do? He kicks the shit out of Cody so that Jessica could catch up, then Cody and Jessica hold each other totally forgetting that Cody just got his ass handed to him by his partner. Great stuff, hahaha!

This is a tough one since there are a lot of satisfying game endings out there and if I'm going to keep this spoiler free I'll have to watch my step. Now just because the game ending is a good one doesn't mean that the game is good as a whole. Can't think of one at the moment but a few titles that pop up in my head of good games with appropriate endings are Gears of War 3, Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim and Half Life 2.

Im sure that I can think of a few more but right now I feel that the word shall be handed over to the people! :)

The funniest one for me was definitely Hitman: Blood Money. What a riot. Waking up at your own funeral and killing everyone? That's fucking sweet. I died laughing.

When you find out the truth behind Silent Hill 2? Oh man. The feels. I'm talking about when you watch the video tape and you find out Mary has been in the trunk of your car the whole time. Holy shit, man.

Earthbound, Silent Hill 2, and Red Dead Redemption.
