Do you play games for the gameplay or for the story?

I play them mostly for the story. I have to watch the cutscenes all over again when I play a game again.

Most people find innovation and originality in the gameplay on gamespot. I find innovation and originality in the story.

I play for the story. But the gameplay has to be on point inorder for the story to be enjoyable. I too, love the cutscenes and will watch them again when I replay the game.

Depends on the game. If it's a game that is made to have a engaging story then I play it for the story, Of course the gameplay have to appeal to me if I am to have enough interest to play through the game. If it's like Left4Dead Or Borderlands then I Gameplay comes first rather then story since it's designed to have you play with friends or others to complete a goal or several goals.

It depends. I can get interested in a game for it's story or gameplay. Some games I love for both.

I too, will watch the cutscenes every time I replay a game.

Same. I can enjoy either aspect of a game. I just hate when devs sacrifice story to enhance gameplay and vice versa.

Gameplay for me; I can keep playing if the story blows. If the gameplay blows, it could be Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and you couldn't make me keep playing.

Gameplay..It's what makes a game, a game esentially. I do appreciate games with a story, but I don't think it's on the same level as films or books.

Both, but I find that a game with great gameplay and a bad story can still be good, but a game with crappy gameplay and a great story is still bad.

I usually play for story, but some games(Borderlands 2 for instance) I play solely for the gameplay.

I play for the gameplay. Only story I ever really got into would be Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but other than that i usually don't take notice of the story

Story. Always. No matter how good the gameplay is, a story that resonates with me will always outrank a game with better gameplay.

Also, when I'm playing at a mate's house, I hate when they skip cutscenes.

Overall I consider gameplay to be more of a dealmaker or braker. I'd say 70% gameplay 30% story, with the exceptions of some games like Silent Hill, Metal Gear, Alan Wake, etc.

Depends. I definitely played Mass Effect 2 for the story, but I couldn't care less about the story when I played a game like Borderlands.

Hm...A little of both I suppose. The story is pretty important, but so is the gameplay. I guess it depends on the game really. Good question.

Well, I usually play for both, but gameplay is more important than story. Some games don't need a story, like multiplayer only game, such as counter-strike or team fortress.

Gameplay. Story is usually not that great in video games, and even the stories that are supposedly good (like Heavy Rain and Mass Effect) are only good by videogame standards IMO.

I do appreciate it when developers make an effort to tell a decent story, but I play games for gameplay.

It really depends on the game in itself. There are some games that don't really have much of a good plot, but instead provides great gameplay, so I play it for that. But some games have decent or not the most fun in the game, but there's something about the story that makes you want to keep going, so you move on and soldier it through. But what if the game has both great story and great gameplay? Then you play it for both.

I play for story. If the gameplay is good, then it is the perfect deal. But i will take a game with excellent story (Deadly Premonition) and clunky controls, over anything else to be frank.

i just dont like this idea that there are separate gameplay and story moments in many games. they have some long cutscene where the characters are explained and then there is this distant sequence where the player runs through a level shooting or hacking stuff to pieces until the next cutscene. the two have little to do with each other beyond names. a big one for me was red dead redemption. in cutscenes, one shot to the main character's side puts him in a bed for a week. in the gameplay, a bullet that blows a hole in his chest can be recovered by crouching behind cover for a few seconds. there are even worse examples in that particular game too. the characters dont seem to exist in the same world.

I play videogames for both story and gameplay. And most of the time, the gameplay is essential to the storyline for a videogame

Gameplay, I'm sick of rubbish story driven games like Mass Effect 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 hogging Game of the Year awards, if developers are doing to make story driven games, they should be like Mafia II.

BTW, I made a thread like this on System Wars.

To me they are not mutually exclusive. Good gameplay complements a good story and vice versa. I have been put off games before because they lacked in either department a great deal.

To me, if either one is exceptionally good, it can make up for the other one being weak. I lean more towards story-centered games. Heavy Rain and The Walking Dead Episodes are good examples of that, and they have little actual gameplay.

Depends on the game and genre and what I feel like playing at the moment, but my favorite genres are better known for their gameplay rather than story. They are roguelikes, platformers and fighters.

Depends on my mood sometimes I want story, and sometimes I want gameplay though. I'd rather get both in one.

If a game isn't fun to play, then I won't play it, so the gameplay has to be good. A good story is a bonus.

While I do like a great story, I mainly care about the gameplay. I just want a game that's fun to pick up and play. If the mechanics and combat systems are good, I'm happy. A good story is more of an added bonus.
