There's probably going to be many people saying God Of War, but my personal favorite is: BULLY. Very original and usually overlooked, I loved the fighting,angst, and how Jimmy Hopkins resembles Holden Caulfield in some ways. Lotsa fun with that game.
Mine would have to be Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. I had no preconceptions of what the Dragon Quest series was at the time of playing it. I was new to the series, and what I played... wow. I was enthralled, immersed, it was just an overall great game, made all the more satisfying because I didn't know what to expect, so it was a pleasant surprise.

My favorites are FFX, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest VIII and MGS3. I've put them down in terms of how much I like them, but I leave it like this so people can swap it around as they like ;)
Okami. It lifted the bar of what I thought was the best of the best on the ps2.
Worthy mentions; FFX, 12, Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, Red Faction 1, GTA 3/VC/SA, Gran Turismo 3, any game from Level 5, Tekken 5, Zone of the Enders 1, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3.
Action: DMC 3. RPG: They are only good for one playthru; so the better ones are pretty much equal, in my eyes. Ar Tonelico 2...I suppose. Fighting: Fantasy type: Virtual Fighter 4 EVO. Sports: Fight Night Round 3 (although, FNR2 has a better presentation) Platforming... I don't like games that have platforming that don't have the mechanics to achieve it. It's the main reason why I don't like GOW. "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time". Horror: Fatal Frame II. Racing: Burnout series. Best Story: Rule of Rose (game play is horrid, though.)
