Note: Platforms I own are PC, PS2, PSP, Wii and DS.

Thank you in advance.

Note: I listed the games which I ve already tried in my second posting somewhere below.

Note 2: Please, put special emphasis on the best of the best games so that I can prepare my "must own" list.

I grew up as a Nintendo gamer, so I don't have many suggestions for non-nintendo consoles buuut... EDIT: just read the note, sorry about listing games for a console you don't have... but you can always try emulaters. Also, Final Fantasy I and II are in a one-cartridge deal for the GBA that you could play on your DS. I believe it's called "Final Fantasy I and II: Dawn of Souls" And I believe Crono Trigger was also put on the Playstation... NES Final Fantasy I SNES Final Fantasy II Crono Trigger Earthbound Super Mario RPG Playstation Final Fantasy 7 Final Fantasy 8 Final Fantasy 9 Persona Someone else could probably give you a better list, I was never that much of an RPGer myself. Those are just the really good ones that I know of, I haven't played all of them.

  1. Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn

  2. Shadow Hearts/Shadow Hearts Covenant (should play them both)
  3. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
  4. Persona 3

  6. Xenosaga Series

Wii

  1. Tales of Symphonia (Gamecube)

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

KotOR series.

Fable, though it's not really an RPG as much as action/adventure.

Some more, but I'll post them later.

Morrowind is definitely a game that never gets old. Especially if you have the two expansions... It's incredibly addicting, and it's very easy to get lost in the game for hours before realizing how long you've been playing. But I definitely wouldn't suggest it on the Xbox. You can heavily modify it on the PC version, and there's so many good mods out for it, that it would be a shame to buy it on the Xbox.

Chrono Trigger is a huge must play. Ranks right up there with FFVII in my book, but in some ways I think it has aged better.

Final Fantasy X has a crazy story that makes no sense and is amazing at the same time.

KoToR is just fun. Not a great story and the light/dark choices are kinda lame but being able to do whatever you want is always fun.

Any Pokemon game. They may seem childish but I picked one up last year (Good ole' blue) and remembered how addicting they are.

Kingdom Hearts 2. Again childish but somehow is a great game with a good story.

Final Fantasy VI. Incredible story, tons of great characters, funny, great enemies, just great.

Those would be my picks. FFXII is good but not incredible. Bioshock may not be a true RPG but still one of the best games I've played.

You have a PC, so that is all you need for the best RPGs:

1.) Baldurs Gate I & II

2.) Neverwinter Nights

3.) Knights of the Old Republic I & II

4.) Morrowind

5.) Oblivion

Thank you for all your valuable comments.

Now, I am listing the games I already own and/or I ve already played:

PC

Baldur's Gate 2, IWD 1&2, Planescape Torment, Fallout 1&2, Arcanum, Morrowind, Diablo 1&2, Might and Magic VI&VII, NWN 1&2, Fable, The Witcher

Others

DQ VIII, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Tales of Eternia, Jeanne D'Arc, Monster Hunter Freedom, Phantasy Star II-III-IV (for PSP)

Any games better than those I already have which are obviously worth hunting down and buying?

Let's see...I'll try one per platform:

Secret of Mana: Great game alone, but a helluva lot better with 2 more people.
Fire Emblem: Engaging, challenging, and a great storyline.
Final Fantasy: Still quite a good game (especially when you name your characters Kenny, Cartman, Stan & Kyle (Kenny being the Black Mage :P):P))
Kingdom Hearts: Hey, if I can put Secret of Mana up there, why not Kingdom Hearts?
Phantasy Star IV: Nice wrap up to the series.

Of course, being an RPG enthusiast, this was pretty damn hard.

Single greatest game ever made. Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy III, and Final Fantasy VII don't even come close (take it from a man who owns each of the mentioned games, complete with boxes and manuals for their original systems). If you like RPGs, you owe it to yourself to play this game. It has become rather obscure, so now it is pretty expensive. The reason it is so rare is because a lot of the originals were sent back to Taito/Natsume (depending on the region) due to the sheer difficulty of the game. The puzzles are mind-bending, the battle system is cIassic and surprisingly deep for a SNES RPG, the soundtrack is outstanding, the art styIe is beautiful, and the story is entrancing. Due to the Ancient Cave feature, the replay value is near infinite. I don't believe it is at all possible to improve upon this game. I've beaten it over twenty times, and i have no plans to stop playing it.

Personally, the mods aren't that big of a deal for me. I don't think I use any, other than the official ones, which are about two. Generally, I prefer games on the console to them being on the PC, though Morrowind I definitely prefer on the PC. Playing it on the Xbox isn't bad, though.

Yes, but the game can get pretty glitchy and unfair, which is where the PC shines with the console command key.

I've never really had any problems with glitches or unfairness, though I'm not saying they can't have happened.

Whoa whoa whoa, hold on. I'm going to disagree. I played both, and believe me I think FF7 is a contender for Best Game Ever Made Ever ZOMG LOLZ, and I also recently finished Dragon Quest 8.

Now don't get me wrong. Dragon Quest 8 was fun, I had a gripe with the cartoony, anime-y (KAMEAMEAAAHHHHH!!!!), goofy looking enemies that made me want to snuggle with them, not fight them; not to mention the ridiculous looking bosses, the repetitive enemy models and, well, King Trode. All this being said, I had a lot of fun with the game. I thought it was really, really good. Not great, CERTAINLY not FF7 great, merely really good. The item crafting was fun, the monster arena was a good side quest, but the story never really captivated me. It only really got good around when Neos got briefcase nuked. FF7's story grabbed me by the balls and didn't let go until the final breath. With Dragon Quest 8, I didn't feel the same pull, I'm sorry to say. Maybe I never will.

That being said, let's not make rash comparisons that we can't back up here.

Legend of Dragoon (PS)

Star Ocean: Til the End of Time (PS2)

KH series

(I decided to avoid the obvious FF games :P)

Shiggums

Good pull with Legend of Dragoon. Too many people haven't played that gem.

Also, sorry for not adding games to my rant above. If they haven't been added:

FF7, you must play this if you haven't already. You must.

Final Fantasy Tactics

Chrono Trigger / Chrono Cross (Hell, play Radical Dreamers if you can come across a decent port)

Personally, I think you should skip Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Xenosaga. Play Xenogears, for sure, but Xenosaga is both punishingly hard and the story isn't that interesting. As for SO:TtEoT, it's interesting story doesn't make up for the difficulty and the really awful battle mechanics. Read a synopsis. Playing that game is more of a chore than anything else.

3DO had a good rendition of Star Control 2 and the PC had Star Control 3

Genesis had Might and Magic(I have to admit, that was an acquired taste.) Genesis had Star Flight. (Another acquired taste)

PC and Mac (Mac version is free) had Wing Commander:Privateer.

This list is mostly backwards compatibility. These are games I also own or use to own.

Gamecube/ Wii / Virtual Console

Tales of Symphonia

Baten Kaitos EWLO and Baten Kaitos Origins

Paper Mario N64

Paper Mario Gamecube

Shining Force 1 and 2

Pokemon games

Skies of Arcadia

DS/ GBA

Mario and Luigi SS and PiT

I don't have a DS, but that new Sonic RPG looks pretty good.

Others

Grandia 2- They made it for PC, PS2, and Dreamcast. My friends said the PS2 version was not as good as my DC version. I don't know about the PC version. My friends also said that Grandia, G3, and G Xtreme were good, because they wern't ports.

the Zelda series if you count them as a RPG.

no FF games?

You NEED:

1. FFX-PS2

2. Guild Wars-PC

other games that MIGHT interest you:

1. KOTOR (was kinda boring to me though)

2. FFXII (can be kinda boring if you expect it to be like FFX. It's more of an offline MMOG. If you like Monster Hunter, you'll like this)

3. KH 1 and 2 (2 is much better, but also much easier. Real-time battles are fun and if you like Disney, you should definitely get).
