What's the best 2D platformer you ever played and what makes it the best? Mine's definitely Trine 2. Awesome gameplay with amazing visuals and it's also pretty easy to play, which makes it a perfect game to relax with.
@tilenm: Super Mario World, Bubble Bobble, and Sonic and Knuckles are some of my favorites. Even Putty Squad (which got a weird love/ hate remake lately. Yet still inferior to its original due to modernising in the wrong ways and a questionable artstyle)
And then the new Sonic: Mania which is fantastic! But I'll hold off deciding how much I enjoy it when the glamour of a decent Sonic rebirth wears off. As I'm currently bias towards how good I think it is_
And to say why I favor these games, level design is usually a big factor for me to enjoy a raw 2D platformer, and this leans me more to favor Super Mario World. Which I personally feel handles level design better than its older brother Super Mario Bros 3 and the other games listed (maybe not Mania but I'm still sceptical)
Just my opinion though_
Donkey Kong Country Returns or Tropical Freeze
-Engaging level design
-Pitch perfect challenge
-Excellent sense of exploration for secrets/collectibles
-levels are also designed incredibly well for the time trial mode
-pitch perfect controls that actually make use of the varying degrees of movement afforded by the analogue stick (are these the only 2D platformers to actually capitalize on this?)
-the attention to detail in animation, visuals, and context is beyond the vast majority of effort put into any game ever released.
I simply cannot praise them enough.
Tropical Freeze
:O. . .
Wow! How did I forget DK: Tropical Freeze?! It's one of the few games on WiiU I praised heavily, along with Bayonetta 2.
It needs a second chance on the Switch for more to play it!
@tilenm: have to add Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze to the mix and thank Pikmin for the reminder. I've already shamed myself forgetting that gem. Fantastic game.
Yet I still personally pick Super Mario: World as no.1. As much as I remember enjoying Tropical Freeze I don't remember its level design being better than some of the other games listed, it reminded me of 2D Kirby games for level design, and sometimes felt gimmicky, even then it's certainly the best Donkey Kong game ever made in my opinion; and a fantastic 2D platformer!
@tilenm: Do like a good 2D platformer but I don't play them all, they're just usually a nice choice on the side of something a little more serious; just like Beat em' Up/ Metroidvania games.
3D platformers? less so, but I do enjoy them as well. But they require more time and effort so play less of them.
My favorite is LittleBigPlanet 2. Gorgeous art style. Tons of gameplay variety. Doesn't outstay its welcome (no padding). Great sense of humor. Endless online levels.

I love Little Big Planet 2 with a passion till Sumo Digital killed it with awful patches. However, overall it's barely a platformer and when it is, handles with some input issues and less polished precision. Overall the platforming is not the main appeal of the series.
Despite that, LBP2 is a masterpiece. And yet it's a creation sim if it fit in any genre, much how Minecraft is not a FPS_
