Wow, 20 big ones. Quickly looked over the list and didn't see much that interested me.

Yeah it sounds harsh but come on, 20G and pick up only.

Not necessarily a specific auction, but just something I've noticed while I've been floating around ebay...

Has anyone else noticed that people seem to think they can slap the word "rare" on any auction and immediately ratchet up their asking price?  I'm sure there are suckers out there who are going to either bid starting price of $10.00 for that RARE cart-only copy of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt, or get jumpy and Buy-It-Now for $15.00.  But what are the odds that happens vs. the seller wasting their money on submitting an auction that has no chance?

Yeah, I think a lot of sellers are confusing rare with OOP.

It always amazes me when people without a compelling eBay track record put together auctions like this without seeming irony.  It's like going to a casino and putting all of your money on 20 black (ala Lola Rennt).  Maybe he will get lucky and have his life sorted out, but probably not.  eBay isn't the same thing as charity.

That bothers me too, especially since I feel like I have a handle on what games really are rare.  I've seen auctions where a seller tells me that game X is rare, and yet when I check the DP listing just to be on the safe side, since I've been wrong at times, they almost never are.  Even with searchable rarity databases and VGC magazine out there, some people are convinced that whatever old games that they can dredge out of some closet must be rare, just b/c Wal-Mart doesn't carry them any longer.

I ran across a guy recnetly while doing a search, can't remember the username, that had "RARE" or "ULTRA RARE" on every single item he was selling in his store. I didn't look at it all, but the stuff I did look at wasn't wraped and brand new but he had asking prices of at least 19.99 starting bid on every item, or buy it now for more money.

EDIT: Found the guy, link below. Please keep in mind that I'm not in the know when it comes to rare games, so this guy might be less crazy to the rest of you then he is to me.

"black cased version" basically either means it's a pirate or they painted it black.

I always figured it was just sellers trying to trick naive buyers out of more money. I mean, I've seen games that are still being sold being advertised as "Ultra Rare" (like a phenoix wright auction I saw).

But reading what you said, that reminded me of the kinds of auctions where a stupid seller will list a game thats normally rare and mark it at the price that it normally goes for, but only sells part of the game thus making it worthless yet still seems to expect that they'll get full price for it easy. Aside from the countless "Panzer dragoon saga, disc # only" auctions, I thought this auction was a bit humorous (make sure to read the auction title as well).

I think that there ought to be some "three strikes and you're out" clause with sellers that pull that bait and switch trick. Saying something is complete in the title and changing it up in the sale bill makes me die a little inside every time. ****

hahahahahaha... awww man, it's gonna cost him so much to have that listed and no one will buy it hahahahahahahaha... I hope he keeps relisting it at the same price so it keeps costing a bunch of money!

My god...

I really thought that people were getting smart about prices and putting them in the usual price range, but I found this gem while searching for a nomad rechargable battery. WHAT A DEAL! ONLY $800 BUY IT NOW FOR BOTH THE NOMAD AND GAMEGEAR O_O! GOD! WHAT DO I DO!?!

(PS - I am curious, the buy it now looks to be more then the retail price for all those things put together back when they were in print damn)

Wow, maybe he was on crack or something when he listed it :P

According to DP, the Gamegear retailed for $149 US and the Nomad probably retailed for about $200 US, so errr, unless he is including plane ticket for him to fly over andhand deliver it to me I'd guess it was a joke ;)

I realize that factory sealed games from 20+ years ago are exceedingly rare, but these two strike me as a bit on the excessively priced side...

-Contra

-Zombie Nation

***EDIT***

Soon after I posted the original, I found this...arguably a much rarer game than Contra, and priced WAY lower. My head hurts...

You want overpriced sealed games, this guy takes the biscuit:

Zelda SNES (~$615)

Mario World SNES (~$615)

Mario N64 (~$510)

Zelda MM N64 (~$410)

Mario Tennis N64 (~$300)

While some of those might be worth a bit all sealed up like that, that's just excessive. None of them are even slightly rare games. In fact, I saw a sealed Mario World in Gamestation for £25 the other week and thought that was a bit much considering they had ordinary boxed copies for £10. £15 for cellophane?

That eBay seller *has* got nice complete PAL NES Stack-Up and Donkey Kong Jr Maths... now those *are* rare.

Super Mario World SNES for about $60 AUS? That's pretty good, for a resale that is :P But I only end up buying a sealed game by mistake becasue I brought it to play it, but never got around to it. No way I would pay 100's of bucks for a bit of clear wrap.

Gosh darn it! It's ended because of an 'error in the listing'. What a shame. It's what I always wanted. Maybe he forgot to add the bit where it's all totally illegal and eBay tends to frown upon things like that...

The following Final Fantasy VII auctions prove just how many people are smoking too much FFVII weed. $65.50-89.95 - All are Buy It Now only ORIGINAL FINAL FANTASY VII 7 COMPLETE SONY PS1 BLACKFinal Fantasy VII Playstation PS1 ORIGINAL NGH *MINT*Final Fantasy VII FF 7 (Playstation) 2-2-3G Rare PS1FINAL FANTASY VII 7 Complete Rare PSX PS1 Excellent RPGFinal Fantasy VII Playstation PS1 *RARE* Complete GHhart704

*sigh* All too familiar...

Some people just don't have a clue. It's not uncommon for me to see that thing go for £30+ in shops here, and eBay sellers asking upwards of £40, seemingly oblivious to the approximately four million other copies available. The fact that the Platinum version is *still in print* doesn't dissuade these poor souls from attempting to secure a mortgage with this rarest of rare games.

The funny thing is, Final Fantasy 6 and 9 are probably the hardest to find yet go for the least amount :P

Oh yeah. VI and IX are my favourite FF games (or X depending on my mood).

I'm actually having a hard time finding a good copy of VI though. I don't like the PS1 version, the SNES version is stupidly hard to find over here (actually it was never released here) and every copy I've seen of the new GBA version seems to be either really expensive or some cheap-ass HK knockoff... *mutters*
