My favourite Final Fantasy!

User Rating: 9.9 | Final Fantasy X (Mega Hits!) PS2
Gameplay: Final Fantasy X plays alot different than previous games in the series, because it no longer uses the ATB bar in its battle system. Instead, you have as long as you want to decide your attacks. The battle system is also unique in that you use 3 characters at a time, but you can switch out these characters at any time without sacrificing your turn. Some people might gripe about how it's "not a true Final Fantasy battle system" because it breaks the ATB formula of the last 9 games, but I personally think that the battle system was just plain awesome.

The game also has really interesting character customization system known as "Sphere Grid". This is a love-it-or-hate-it system, I think it's one of the best customization systems even put in a game but some people dislike it because your characters don't "level up" in the traditional sense. Instead, you gain experience, and when you obtain enough with a character, you can move another space on this Sphere Grid, which is this HUGE web of skills, magic, and stat increases. For example, if you move a character onto a "+4 Defence" sphere (and pay the required item - though I can't remember a time when I didn't have the required item), then that character will permanently gain 4 points in their Defence stat. As characters progress throughout the Sphere Grid, they can get extremely powerful, though the amount of experience required to move an additional space increases with each move you make (kind of like leveling up, but alot more fun!). The customization that the Sphere Grid system allows makes it one of the best character development systems in any RPG that I've played.

Graphics & Sound: Visually, Final Fantasy X is stunning. Even today, years after it's been released (and in the age of the next-gen systems), FFX still looks amazing! Some of the cut-scenes honestly look as good or even better than things I've seen on next-gen systems. Everything is just so realistic, and it's hard to believe that Square Enix was able to push the capabilities of the PS2 THIS far. Definitely one of the best looking PS2 games I've played. The music in FFX is also top-knotch. In particular, the battle music and the opening theme are really excellent, and the final boss battle music is just insane. FFX is also the first FF game to feature voice acting, and they really nailed the voices in this one: everyone sounds awesome, with absolutely no weak voice actors to be found. Overall, the technical aspects of FFX are top-knotch.

Value: I actually found FFX to be somewhat short for a 3D RPG. I ended up reaching the final boss at 33 hours, which is still a good amount of hours, but doesn't really compare to the 45-50 hour FF8 and FF9. However, the final boss took me 10 hours of attempts to finally beat, so it ended up working out in the end, but even so, it would have been nicer if the main quest was around the same length as the PS1 FF's.

Tilt: Overall, Final Fantasy X is amazing! Everything from the story to the battle system are absolutely astounding, and it's one of the best looking PS2 games available. It's also pretty long, and will definitely keep you busy for a long time. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy or just looking for a good RPG in general, be sure to pick up FFX! You won't be disappointed!
