Gameplay 7/10 -------------------- The original title's gameplay suffered from a variety of faults. Buying 99 potions required 99 separate purchases. Also, setting up attacks at the beginning of each round resulted in players often attacking thin air since the target creature had already been defeated. These small errors are thankfully corrected. The gameplay, however, still has a FF1-FF3 type feel and definitely feels antiquated. Graphics 7/10 -------------------- A remake of the original Final Fantasy using what I would call "FF3 quality graphics" had been a pipe dream of mine for quite some time. To finally see this realized is appealing. After finally seeing it, however, I realize (a) that the original graphics had their own charm and (b) the new graphics add little and are themselves dated. Sound 9/10 ---------------- The updated sound was perhaps the greatest change. The background music has been updated from tinny NES synthesizers to actual orchestral recordings (themselves perhaps synthesized, albeit much more realistic) in CD quality sound. The original town music, for example, sounds excellent with an acoustic guitar. Value 6/10 --------------- This title sold for $30 upon release. While not as expensive as a typical $50 new release, this is still a lot for what feels like an expensive emulation. As a longtime fan of the original, I had no problem paying this amount as it was a welcome novelty. Others who have not played the original will probably find this to be too much to pay. Tilt 8/10 ------------ As I mentioned, I am a longtime fan of the original, having played it almost 15 years ago. This title was a welcome release and the developers did a good job of updating both the appearance and sound. Overall 7.4/10
