A fun variation on the original game.

User Rating: 7.8 | Donkey Kong Jr. NES
At the beginning of this Mario has gotten his revenge against Donkey Kong in this sequel to the original classic, Donkey Kong. This time instead, Mario is the villain and has captured the big monkey and put him in a cage. A new character has been introduced into the game. Donkey Kong now has a son, that you play as and you must find some way to save Donkey Kong from Mario. The enemies in this game include different colored baby crocodiles and some type of bird that flies at you and some that try to drop, what I hope are eggs, on you. Some of the foes may follow you around and try to bite you. Basically all you can do is avoid them or just try to by knocking fruit off a vine onto them. I do like that the enemies are something new from the original, as there are different types of enemies, instead of just watching out for barrels. Besides or avoiding enemies, you have to get a key to open the cage that Donkey Kong is confined in. Although there are just a few levels, each one gets harder and once you complete all of the levels, the game begins again, only this time it is harder from the start. This is the worst part of the game, in my opinion, because there aren't that many levels to begin with and then they start over. This irritated me and I think this game would have been much better if there had been more levels to play. The gameplay is fun, but it only slightly resembles the original Donkey Kong. The characters are the same, with the exception of Jr., but the location and structure of the game has changed. Now you make your way through the game with the help of some vines and other objects instead of by climbing ladders and platforms. The graphics are bright and colorful, not at all blocky looking and the sound is good because you can hear the fruit fall and hit your enemies. I have to say that some sequels are worth playing and others just don't live up to the original. This is one that I don't think is as good a game as the first. It takes a similar concept as the original, but I liked Donkey Kong more than this game. Still, I think if you liked the original Donkey Kong game, then you will probably like this one, as well.
