"Shadow Tactics" in the wild west

User Rating: 9 | Desperados III PC

Good news

- For big fans of this forgotten genre like me, the game itself is a precious gift. This genre was officially dead for about 10 years until 2016, when mimimi team gave us Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun which was a solid game and after that we heard they want to publish the third version of desperados, one of the best series in this genre (actually desperados 1 still is my top list of all times) alongside with commandos. So we were waiting for this a long time and mimimi done it again, well done.

- Mission designing is outstanding. You can see different environments from deserts to canyons and big cities.

- Gameplay is well polished and almost bug free. OK, there are some minor bugs but even the legendary desperados 1 had some bugs. there are nothing that bother you during the game.

- Storyline is pretty good with some twists and keep you interested until the end.

- Two new characters (Hector and Isabelle) are really well-designed and funny to use.

- Interesting in-mission dialogue between the main characters and some funny dialogues for enemies (I expected more but at least they are not mute like enemies in desperados 2).

Bad news

- Only 16 missions! OK, you can play missions again to earn medals and there are also 5 challenge missions, but I prefer to have more story missions instead of these. I was really looking forward to more than 20 missions.

- This genre is generally consist of two part: sneaking and silently kill enemies one by one; and shooting and noisy kill bunch of them. good old games like desperados 1 and commandos 2 had a good balance between these two parts. unfortunately, Desperados 3 is not well balanced just like "Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun". Most of times you must do the things quietly; making any noise and the result is quick load! Even if you can kill some bad guys with a noisy gun, there will be 10 new enemies because you sounded the alarm. So after a while, you just forget this way and stick to the eliminating enemies without making noise. Maybe it's not too bad but even for experienced players, sometimes it gets frustrating. I remember in old desperados1, I was killing bunch of enemies with Sam's winchester or Cooper's revolver. Maybe it didn't make sense but it was huge fun.

- Lack of innovation! mimimi has done a great job so far with using good old things but they don't add much to this genre. "Shadow Tactics" had a few new things such as jumping on and killing enemies from the walls, hiding in the bushes and killing stronger enemies in two step, desperados 3 just repeat all these things but doesn't bring anything new. So if you're expecting something like previous desperados games, I should warn you this game is more of Shadow Tactics in the wild west than desperados.

-Just three types of enemies: gunman(or gunwoman), poncho and long coat. I really miss enemies variety in desperados 1. Lots of different enemies with different looks and style, voice and abilities.
