Saddle this up if you need another Western after Red Dead.... but you may find it to be a lame horse!

Red Dead is a great Western, I also enjoyed Gun back on PS2 - but for the current generation Red Dead feels like the "go to" cowboy experience. Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Medal of Honor are fun first person shooters. What we see here is a game that fits between those game genres, and wants to build off of all those games mentioned, but isn't as good as the building blocks it stands upon.

They make it feel like maybe you have choice in how to play missions, but it really has one route for every mission. I tried to deviate a few times and found my brother (who is almost always with you), would go running away and freak out because he wouldn't know what I was doing, often resulting in a "death" for me because I got too far away from him..... There are some parts that try to make you feel like youre in this big open world, but the game is mostly linear. Very linear. "Don't move more than 20 feet from your brother" linear. They even try to give a few "hub world missions", but it is not open world; its just a building with three missions right near it you can do or not do and you do this two times throughout the game. Then back to the main straight path game. And the horse mechanics are laughable, the area they give you is tiny, the "free roam" missions are few and far between (*6 total). It seems like the game goes in too many directions. They make it straight path progression like Call of Duty, but wanted some of Red Dead's features. And they fail on both points! They give you money earned in missions to buy weapons, but you don't keep them forever, if you upgrade from a great shotgun to a great scoped rifle for a specific mission, that shotgun is gone and you may never afford a new one again. Why not let you keep what you earned?

And multiplayer is mostly empty now even though half the trophies and achievements are for multiplayer only. Really makes me mad when they do that just to keep you playing.... But it wasn't fun enough to keep playing, and the games were barely populated.

I enjoyed it for cheap one time through, the brothers play different, but not enough that Id play through more than once, (although there is a trophy for that). Voice acting was kinda bad and story was alright. Its not a bad game, its just not as good as other games that have been made, so unless you get it cheap, maybe get Red Dead or some other shooters first?
