Vast improvement over the original, but somehow feels shorter.

User Rating: 8.5 | Breath of Fire II: Shimei no Ko SNES
Ahh Breath of Fire II, straight away from the start the setting and story promises much more than the original. The story starts with Ryu living in a small town with his father and sister. May I point out that although the Breath of Fire series uses the same characters for a few of the games they are in no way direct sequels, more just different stories. Anyway, the town is protected by a dragon. It guards a seal to a mountain containing evil. One day while watching the dragon, Ryu falls asleep, and when he wakes up and returns to the village no one remembers him. After being taken in by the local church of the mysterious religion St. Eva, Ryu teams up with a fellow orphan named Bow and sets out to find out what has happened.

Graphics-wise, this game is much more refined than its predecessor, with pretty excellent character and enemy models. Infact if my memory serves correctly, some of the character designs are reused in the 3rd game on the Playstation. That's how good they are! The areas are also graphically tweaked, and use a larger variety of tile sets. All in all, a nice looking RPG.

Sound-wise, there isn't much difference between this and the original. The sound quality is better, but there are the same bog-standard tunes that are in most RPGs. It is the same for the sound effects.

Gameplay-wise, this game takes the formula from the original and improves it. Each character still has their own special ability to use in the field, and all are used ay some point. The fishing mini-game has travelled in leaps and bounds though, where you can actually catch fish now and use them for healing etc. or sell them for money. Relating to the plot, this game has bundles of it, and each character develops quite extensively for a game of this age. You grow to love some characters, and hate others.

Lastability-wise, this game feel shorter than the original, but I'm not sure if it is just the better flow of the story. As usual you can save the game in various places so you don't lose everything you've done.

Overview:
Graphics: Nicely designed enemies and characters. Good looking areas.
Sound: Usual sort of thing for an RPG.
Gameplay: Solid turn-based RPG with character unique abilities and minigames.
Lastability: Long game with save function. Will take a while to finish.
