Zelda: Wind Waker 2 Was Cancelled By Nintendo

Because of a horse.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker was originally meant to get a sequel, but Nintendo cancelled it in favour of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

That's according to an interview with artist Satoru Takizawa (translated by Nintendo Everything), who says, "we had begun the initial steps towards creating Wind Waker 2 … However, demand for a more Ocarina-like game was growing by the day."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Wind Waker 2 Was Canceled By Nintendo

The reason for the cancellation of Wind Waker 2 and subsequent development of Twilight Princess instead is an odd one: horses.

"Wind Waker 2 would have taken place in a more land-based setting, rather than on the sea, so that we could have Link gallop across the land on a horse," says Takizawa. "But Link's proportions in Wind Waker weren’t very well suited for riding on horseback; he was too short, and an adult version of Toon Link did not seem appropriate either.

"High-budget live-action fantasy movies were also huge at the time, so with all things considered, we decided to have at it [and switch to Twilight Princess]."

The interview comes from the new Zelda: Art & Artifacts book, which is released in the UK and US in February but is already available in Japan.

Wind Waker never got a sequel, though it did get an HD re-release in 2013 on Wii U. You can read our The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD review here. Twilight Princess also got an HD Wii U version, in 2016--read our review of that here.

A more cartoonish Link, similar to the one seen in Wind Waker, returns--on horseback--in the newest Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Would you have enjoyed a Wind Waker sequel? Or are you glad we got the more 'realistic'-looking Twilight Princess? Let us know in the comments.

No sequels to WW? BotW Link looks similar to Toon Link?

And somebody got paid for writing this? What a joke...

Out of the two, I'd prefer Twilight Princess. Wind Waker wasn't that great. The vast and very empty sea made it boring at times. Oceanhorn felt more like what Wind Waker should have been. Also, I kind of preferred Twilight Princess' darker art style. It's quite fitting for the Zelda franchise in my opinion.

Whoever wrote this article knows absolutely nothing about Zelda.

Wind Water had two sequels on the DS. Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.

Wow.

"Wind Waker never got a sequel"

yes it did, it's called phantom hourglass. it literally picks up at the end of wind waker. it even retells WW's story to catch players up on it.

Last good Zelda I played was Wind Waker and I was against it's visual style in so many ways when it was still in development. This news irritates me.

Too bad. The cartoony windwaker graphics age very well compared to the normal looking Zelda graphics :/

Wasn't The Phantom Hourglass a Wind Waker sequel? It makes sense that they might have been working on a console version of it at some point, but ultimately decided to go with Twilight Princess, so moved the Wind Waker 2 stuff over to DS for The Phantom Hourglass

Well it really did get sequels in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks that contained many of the same characters as Wind Waker on the DS

Still interesting to hear a console sequel never happened. At least the gave fans what they wanted with Twilight Princess and it ended up being a pretty good game.

@gameplayuk: SS got better as you got further into it. I found that you had to have one of the Wii remotes with the motion plus built into it for it to work well. It was clunky at first, but the later maps made it well worth it, and the story was unique, sort of like how the world of Hyrule came to be.
