Yes, You Can Download Silent Hills' PT Again After Deleting It

It's gone from the PlayStation Network, but only for those who haven't downloaded it before.

58 Comments

After disappearing from PlayStation Stores in other regions overnight, the playable teaser for Silent Hills, PT, is now gone from PSN in North America. Despite this, the game remains playable for those who downloaded it in time and, just as importantly, it can be deleted and re-downloaded if need be.

No Caption Provided

I just ran through the process myself, deleting the game while worrying that it would be gone for good. The deletion screen is accompanied by the standard text explaining that it can be downloaded again from the Library section. It's possible that would prove to be untrue given the unusual circumstances at work here, but after going through with the deletion, I was able to find PT listed in my Library and begin downloading it again like anything else.

Phew.
Phew.

Konami announced last week that it would be removing PT from the PlayStation Store, and that it would not be continuing development of Silent Hills. This news came at a time when developer Kojima Productions is in some upheaval, as GameSpot has been told that Hideo Kojima will be leaving the company following the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. You can get the full rundown on that situation here.

PT arrived on the PlayStation Store last August as a surprise during Gamescom. It was believed to be a demo of a new horror game, but playing it through to completion (no easy feat at the time) revealed it to be a teaser for a new Silent Hill game called Silent Hills. It was to be a collaboration between Kojima and film director Guillermo del Toro, and would star Norman Reedus of Walking Dead fame.

For more on PT, check out our memorial.

This article is INCORRECT.

I have P.T. on my PS4's 500GB hard drive. Today I upgraded to a 2TB hard drive and yes, it is in my Library.

But NO, I can't re-download it for some reason. Keep getting an error - CE-32937-4.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

@amandapanda: Mmmm, and what region are you based in? I added this to my download list months ago, expecting to get it when my PS4 arrives - which should be sometime this week!

I don't have a PS4 yet, but I "purchased" the free P.T. through my PSN account in the store website, and it should appear in my gamse log, so... apparently I'll be able to download and play it afterwards!

@Dieknochenblume: You will, don't worry.

I remember downloading PS3 demos that are not on the PS store (but are still available in "downloads list")

Time to buy tons of PS4s, log in with my PSN, download P.T. on them, then re-sell on eBay.

Repeat till millionaire.

@Elranzer: It would be nice if so, but alas, you can only have one primary console that allows others to play your digital content. If you deactivate your primary console to make another primary, the deactivated one will no longer be able to play your digital content without having access to your account, even if it's a free Playable Teaser.

I've heard reports that if you delete it, it re-downloads itself anyway. And when you launch other games, it launches instead. And when you switch the console off, it boots itself back up, and when you unplug it from the wall, it plugs itself back in.

Konami was such a drag. Every day they’d eat the same kind of food, dress the same, develop the same kind of games… Yeah, they were just that kind of company. But then one day, they go and fire us all! They couldn’t even be original about the way they did it. I’m not complaining… I was dying of boredom anyway, But guess what? I will be coming back, and I’m bringing my new fox engine and concept with me.

This isn't even news. You "buy" something and you can download it as many times as you want even if the item is delisted.

This is as it should be. Once you own something on PSN, Xbox, Steam, you can access it in perpetuity, even if it is delisted. For it to be otherwise would be like a physical disc for a game getting discontinued, and the maker showing up to everyone's house who purchased it, and taking it back.

Wait a minute, people aren't actually buying used PS4's to play this game, are they? Don't they know digital downloads are tied to the original PSN/SEN account and not the system itself? If the original owner decided to deactivate the PS4 he sold you than you would no longer have access to that content.

This is how it is for all digitally distributed games that get pulled from storefronts. Once it's on your account you can redownload.

@Thanatos2k: All, are you sure?

My WiiU suffered an external drive failure and I could not re-download that Rayman Challenges App as it was no longer on the store, didn't matter I had already "purchased" it. I realize Nintendo is the worst for digital policies :), but I don't know if there are other similar cases, I know it's happened on GOG, and didn't it happen on Steam as well?. For PT I actually thought it was going to be no longer downloadable even if you already had it.

@Thanatos2k: "needed" is a strong word, but the article is definitely welcome. I'll never understand the classic internet, "I personally know this already, so who cares?" comments. If you want to use words like "need", you seriously don't NEED to click on every single article. I guess I could click on that Dead Island 2 Delayed article, but it's not for me, like so many other articles. Maybe it would be nice if the internet only catered to my specific needs, but I think it's better for it to be open, and I'll just worry about myself.

@Dannystaples14: Buying a PS4 for P.T. on eBay would be dumb. Not just because of the money, but all someone would have to do is deactivate the primary PS4 from their SEN account, and then the purchaser would be locked out of the game as the license would be tied to the account holder for the primary console.

I doubt anyone has actually bought one off Ebay... and if they'd downloaded it before the first thing you'd do is try and download it again.

@westsiderz28: It usually seems that way, but that's just how it works. I sold some sneakers off my feet for more than I payed for them. People want what they want, no matter what. It's basic economics, supply and demand.

Can we just skip this phase, it seems rather predictable. It will include everyone placing such a premium on PT to the point where it develops a cult-like following and generating extra (inflated) interest that will lead to an announcement where a dev/studio agrees to make and release the game. Let's just skip ALL OF THAT - don't want to read through years of articles of another game that almost did, then didn't, then did.

I don't understand why there are so many articles about the specifics of this game's deletion and all that entails. If someone owns a PS4 and still isn't aware that they can re-download anything they've purchased in the past, they are probably just not a big gamer to begin with.

@Ovirew: Yeah but this is the first time something we bought in the past has been made unavailable in the present. Sony took this off of the market entirely. Most people thought that meant everyone would lose access to it.

That has turned out to not be the case.

No it isn't. Many digital games have been pulled from PSN, XBL, and Steam and such before. All behave the same.
