Xbox One Exec: We're Doing Things That "Can't Be Done" on PS4

"We've really got a lot more going on [than our competitors]."

According to Xbox executive Kudo Tsunoda, the Xbox One has "a lot more going on" than the PlayStation 4 and other competing platforms. In a new interview, Tsunoda talks about how Xbox One features like backwards compatibility, as well as cross-play and cross-buy with PC, give the Xbox One the upper hand.

No Caption Provided

"For a long time we've had PC gamers and console gamers who weren't really able to play together," Tsunoda told GameIndustry International. "That's why cross-play is still such a powerful idea. You should be able to play what you love, and play together, regardless of what device you're playing on. It's about connecting people."

"It's a really unique value that only we can offer," he added. "You still need very gamer-focused values, but there's lots of things you can do with our technology. We've really got a lot more going on [than our competitors]. We're doing things that can't be done on any other console."

Tsunoda went on to say that allowing people to play games "wherever they want, on whatever device they choose, and making that easy" is Microsoft's long-term goal for the overall Xbox ecosystem.

On the subject of backwards compatibility specifically, Tsunoda said he's happy to deliver a feature that fans have been clamoring for.

"With backwards compatibility, it isn't something that we just think gamers might want," Tsunoda explained. "We know. We're looking for and soliciting that feedback. It was the number one most requested feature for Xbox One by far."

For its part, Sony has said it has no plans to bring backwards compatibility to PS4.

Not only does the Xbox One have features and functionality that can't be found or delivered on competing platforms, but the console has a bigger lineup of exclusives than anyone else, Tsunoda said. "We've got a lot more exclusive games than any other platform," he stated.

Some of Microsoft's biggest upcoming Xbox One exclusives for this year include Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fable Legends, and Forza Motorsport 6. Looking into next year and beyond, Microsoft has Quantum Break, Sea of Thieves, Recore, and Inside, among others.

Sony, on the other hand, has admitted that its first-party games lineup for this year is "a little sparse."

wasn't Portal 2 on the PS3 already cross-buy? oO Looks like you are one gen late oO It's stupid anyway, nobody wants the console version of a game they can run on the PC and nobody needs the PC version if the PC can't play it oO

I have both I like Both. I hope both do well. Sony needs to focus a bit more on what MS is doing though. I think there Ego is taking over due to high sales and that's not a good thing. Sony ego = huge pitfall and mistakes.

@xbhonner: streaming is cool and yes was on Ps4 first but was not officially for any devices besides Sonys own Vita, TV, Phones/Tablets. I think it should of been universal to as many devices as possible officially.

yeah, it should, but i think its cheaper to make feature where games streamable to their own devices first

Every game on his list of exclusive titles, yawn. Another Halo? Yippie, another game in a dying series... a Gears of War remake? need I say more?... another Tomb raider? a series that hasn't been popular since the PS1... Fable Legends? Fable 2 and 3 were flops... another Forza? well I'm bias as I hate racing games in the first place, but Forza is nothing to be proud of... Xbone is nothing special, it's a less advanced, less compatible PC.

I have both consoles and can't wait for BC on the Xbox one but I have too say Sony could completely undermine Microsoft's momentum if they allow free PlayStation now access to ps3 games you already own. If they did this Sony would have double the BC catalogue of Xbox one in one day compared to the months its taking on Xbox one.

Ok I'm going to side step the XB1 and PS4 war and say Nintendo has more "exclusives" then both of them... Combine. And I'm pretty sure tomb raider is a timed exclusive. Forza comes out every year. Woopie. Quantum Break looks meh. And Gears ultimate edition? Another HD remake? Pass. Sony has alot of exclusived probably equal and there are game that do the cross play as well with SOE games that are on PC and PS4 and also SFV. So they REALLY are not doing much the competition isn't already doig presently. Also technically the WiiU has a larger back catalogue that's been readily available since launch.

Let me get this straight. You think you have more going on then PS4. PS4 already has games from the previous gen, Playstation Now ring a bell? Now I don't play Xbone and haven't researched how their backwards compatability works....if it isn't by disc then it's nothing new. PC cross play? Yeah that's gonna be on Street Fighter Five...that PS4 exclusive....

@racinger: It is by disc or DLC. apparently if you put a 360 disc in the XB1 drive, it installs that game to the HD. The disc is needed everytime you want to play that game on XB1 just as it would if it were on the 360.

Now I understand there's not a lot of love for XB1 for many reasons, mostly because MS has their name attached to it, but regardless of personal opinions, this feature is a pretty big deal. Huge actually. You can't really lump PS Now into the same category. A streaming service that you have to PAY FOR in order to play "select" PS3 games, isn't true backwards compatibility. The fact that I can take games that I already own, put the disc into the XB1 and play that game without paying for it or subscribing to something is a big deal for those who still like our old games. This also goes for digital games purchased. If I purchased digital copies through XBL on the 360, I now have access to that digital title on my XB1 without paying for it again, without needing a disc...I just install and play it. No extra cost. Essentially if I want to play a PS3 title on my PS4 through playstation now, I have to pay for it, even if I already own the PS3 disc version of that game. PS Now is a cool service if you've ditched your PS3 and the games, but if you still own your PS3 and Games, wouldn't it be nice to ditch the PS3 hardware and be able to play everything on the PS4? Better yet, if I don't own a PS3, wouldn't it be nice to have the option of buying cheap used PS3 games and be able to play them on the PS4? This is what MS is offering. Hate MS or not, this is a good move and one that Sony isn't likely to support unless they want to lose the millions they've invested in the PS Now platform. To support backwards compatibility would be to compete against their own PS Now service.

@spectreSE7EN: I just still have a 360 and PS3. You can't beat that compatibility for 360 and PS3 games.

If backwards compatibility is really important to someone they should probably just invest in a system that plays ALL the previous titles. Ditching the hardware for emulated, limited support isn't wise at all.

If space is such a huge concern I'm not sure what kind of cubical people are living in. Get some shelves, put unused ones in a closet or drawer, something. If hooking up cables is a pain get an input selector box and set it up somewhere convenient.

Point being, if you need a screwdriver, maybe you should keep a screwdriver on hand instead of just getting out the trusty ole hammer.

FatBoyWonder makes some good points. PS4 and XB1 will never get true 4K, due to hardware, but they might get upscaled 4K atleast.

But see, here is made another point, how will XB1 get 4K upscaled if it can't even run any of the Call of Duty's in 1080p?

The PS4 IS unquestionably superior, not only due to this, but many other reasons. We should all comment and decide based on logic and facts, not emotional ties to a console.

@passionategamer: this is where you're very wrong. The word "unquestionably" is more misused in that sentence than I've ever heard it before. Hardware honestly isn't everything. Different features, accessibility, and all around enjoyment is what makes a console superior. So what if the games look the EXACT SAME on both consoles save for some minor details? Honestly the superiority of a console, is specifically determined by the individual user, not some jackoff sitting on his computer whining about hardware differences and such. You sir have obviously never heard of what an "opinion" is.

Arguing exclusives is like arguing pecker size. If you're happy then who cares?

As a PC gamer I am going to settle this 4K debate. X1 and PS4 will NEVER play games at 4K. It is not physically possible with the hardware in both systems. It would take 4+ of the current GPU's in either system to game 4K. Argue this all you want, but it will be in vain. It takes around a $1,000+ dollars in GPU hardware to get started in 4K gaming.

My roommate has an X1 and I loved it, but it wasn't very reliable. Consistent connectivity issues, UI freezes/crashes, etc. My other friend's PS4 was much more reliable. Graphically the PS4 is superior, BUT the differences are usually very negligible. If console gamer's care that much then get a PC where the graphics will always be superior.

I give them credit for backwards compatibility, but I personally wouldn't use it.

I personally hate everything Microsoft due to their privacy sharing *cough* Windows 10 *cough* and the X1 has similar issues. Bottom line, its a nice gaming console, but not really different than the PS4 gaming wise. All those home media features it has will cause problems somewhere.

@fatboywonder: To get a little pedantic here, X1 and PS4 will never play the vast majority of games at 4K. A very simple indie game they'd be able to manage most likely. Essentially, the PS4 and X1 will never be able to play the games you'd want them to in 4K.

As for Kudo's comments, Nintendo has the most and best exclusives. Everyone knows this so why even bother saying otherwise? As for cross-buy and cross-play, well, Sony pretty much invented cross-buy and they have a few games that do cross-play in the terms Kudo means (instead of how Sony defines cross-play). Rocket League is cross-play in that regards and yet the vast majority of console gamers I know of tick the box to disable it since there are already PC exploits for Rocket League. I seem to remember similar issues when Microsoft brought out Shadowrun last generation and PC players absolutely destroyed console player largely thanks to KB+M and people pitched a fit. I'm not sure how they plan to overcome that issue this time, but I guess they can still hang their hat on the backward compatibility thing, although I do believe WiiU is also BC and was from the jump.

Kind of funny how both Sony and Microsoft just never even acknowledge Ninty's existence. Last generation Wii had such an insurmountable lead that we heard PR BS from both that they didn't consider themselves in direct competition with the Wii, and now that the WiiU is dead in the water sales wise (despite having the best exclusive catalog of the bunch), it's pretty much the same talking points if and when it comes up. Hey fellas? Nintendo makes consoles, you make consoles. You are competitors.

I wouldn't say X1 has more exclusives then competition by a long shot.

Firstly, X1 so called exclusives can be found on PC's as well........

Secondly, Wii U has crushed competition with their exclusives. Sorry guys but you know this is true. Yes its been out longer but to say we have more exclusives then our competition is lying. Even if its for this year.

Lastly, ill give it to Microsoft for having backwards compatibility. This is honestly something both systems PS4 and X1 should have had at launch like Wii U has.

@Sharkspawn80: Lol, Nintendo is a joke. They make some decent games, but their hardware is awful, and has been since the N64. They aren't really in competition with Xbox or PlayStation anymore. They've got one foot in the grave. Why anyone even bothers talking about Nintendo in discussions like this is beyond me.

That shows how desperate Microsoft is. They know how they pissed off allot of their fans, so now they're trying to remedy the lower player count by cross-platforming with PC? Please, how lame!

PC has less players than PS4, XB1, or even their predecessors, so how is joining PC and XB1 players impressive? Sounds like a desperate, pathetic attempt to rectify all the sh*t they tried to force on us a few years ago.

Battlefield Hardline has 4X the players on PS4 then XB1 does, so who cares about joining an even smaller PC community? It'll still be less than PS4 anyway.

The PS4 is clearly superior, and that's coming from someone who preferred the 360 over the PS3.

@passionategamer: Come on guy. I agree with you that the ps4 has a larger playerbase than xbone or any other console but to say the PC has a small community is just crazy don't you think. Just LoL alone had an average of 27 million players daily as of January and a total of 67 million monthly... that's more that the ps4 units sold that was reported to be 23 million back in April? Let's try to stick to facts when having these discussions ok?

@zokoye: You make a good point zokoye. I know PC has the largest player base, hell, they have every Call of Duty and Battlefield, unlike any one console.

I meant the individual games that would be cross platformed on PC and XB1 have less players, as opposed to PS4.

But yeah, as a total platform, the PC online community as a whole is way bigger than any console.

@passionategamer: "and that's coming from someone who preferred the 360 over the PS3." So what does that make you some type of reliable source? Do us a favor and stick with PS, a console thats worse than its predecessor with the exception of a supposed 1080p 60fps upgrade and we'll stay with our console that gets better every month, that if we wanted to play the top PS exclusives all we'd have to do is sign into MS windows and play it there.

@con_wars: I mean, I bought both the PS4 and XB1, and played them both for a year before making a judgement of which was better, not to mention all my research.

And do you just assume that the XB1 is the best just because you like it and think it's the best, while not even considering the facts, or the possibility that the PS4 may be better? It's opinions like this that I pay no attention to because they're not based on logic.

And in regards to sticking with PlayStation, I will, but I don't limit myself to a single faction per say, I enjoy all of them. Atleast the PS4 displays Call of Duty in 1080p, unlike 720p in Ghosts, and 900p in Advanced Warfare on XB1. Wow, the XB1 is REALLY impressing me (sarcasm LOL).

@con_wars: Hi con_wars. The reason I said I liked the 360 over the PS3 was to show how I wasn't an irrational console fan-boy that always thinks PlayStation is the best. Because I, obviously unlike you, make educated, rational decisions about my gaming. I don't always assume Playstation is best, unlike your Xbox views.

@con_wars: As an owner of a ps4 and xbone and a loyal xbox gamer since the og xbox, I can and will say my ps4 is more reliable than my xbone will ever be. My PS4 logs me in every time I turn it on, xbone... Yeah not so much. This is set to auto-login my profile, yet will give me a "sorry Ryan, we couldn't log you in, login with controller" at least twice a week. About 2/3 times it won't connect to Xbox live, when I check connection I get the, read in my mind as some derby dude bro saying it "It's all good!" Yeah, if it's all good why haven't you connected? Most times when I go back home that fixes it.

Then the wonderful bonus game called "Nothing Works, Let's Hard Reboot." This game shows up every couple days due to numerous reasons. Refuses to connect to Internet, no chat in online games, can't connect to online games, the xbox decides it's time...

Makes me feel like I've got me a quality console there. PS4 sucks though, everytime I turn it on it logs me in and connects to the net and gives me no problems.... terrible system that

You should be able to play what you love, and play together, regardless of what device you're playing on.

-Kudo Tsunoda

If he really believes that then let me play multiplayer with my PS4 brethren on my Xbox One that would actually be a big help. I have a friend who has Dying Light over on the PS4 that I would like to play with and I bought the game on the Xbox One because I was unaware he had it on the PS4. I don't want to buy 2 copies of the same game one for each system and I don't want to sell my Xbox copy and start all over. So let me co-op with him from PS4 to Xbox One I mean I honestly don't see what the problem is. F that stupid fanboy war crap what you play on doesn't matter and if the suits at either company really think that allowing the gamers to play with each other on competing systems will some how convince them to ditch the system they own and buy the other then they're really out of touch with their consumer because that would be retarded.

Exactly if Microsoft really wants to impress me then allow me to play a multiplayer game with people on the PS4 even if Sony doesn't agree to it say you would do it. It would at least make you look good in comparison to them then we'd only have to get Sony on board.

Flip side PS4 is doing things that can't be done on Xbox: Sell 20 million consoles to consumers in its first 2 years. Natively run triple A 3rd party titles at 1080p. Not look like a VCR from 1982. Not charging their consumers another $150 for a controller that should have shipped with the console. Giving huge support to indie dev's without caveats. And giving nearly $1400 a year in savings to their premium customers.

@209asian:

R u kidding me bro? U really reaching with these claims. Sony needs to give the ponies some money in savings because they ripping them off with PS NOW. Charging them for games they already own. Backwards Compatability trumps that. The DVR features will soon replace some people's real DVRs at home just get an external hard drive. And all Sony cares about  anyways is hardware sales and 1080p resolution. That's y they r leading in hardware sales and have no games. All AAA games Sony had for 2015 r Bloodborne and The Order. And the Order did horribly. Microsoft for 2015 Halo 5, Forza 6, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and They r the only company offering a AAA game this generation free to play in Fable Legends. Lol.. Did u say AAA third party titles. That's funny cause Sony is losing money trying to lock up third party deals. By the way, Sony wish they could develop a controller like the Elite one Microsoft has. Phil Spencer knows best gaming engineers in the world. And 2016 looks like an insane lineup for Microsoft with: Recore/Sea of Thieves/Quantum Break/Gears 4/Crackdown/Scalebound/Halo Wars 2. Then a large number of Indies like Cuphead, Inside, Below, Tacoma. Wow.. Sony better hope Microsoft does not figure out how to Stream PC games To Xbox One. The new UI with Cortana will be killer as well.
