Xbox Exec Responds to Scorpio Concerns

Developers have "responded well to it as we've shared the plans with them."

One concern some have raised about Microsoft's Project Scorpio and Sony's PlayStation Neo is the potential burden of supporting two consoles, each with different specs, at the same time.

Now, Xbox Head of Operations Dave McCarthy has responded. He told GameSpot that Scorpio can offer a "seamless" experience for developers.

Now Playing: Scorpio Announcement from Xbox Conference at E3 2016

"Obviously, listening to their feedback on Xbox One influenced our approach on Xbox One S and has influenced our approach to Project Scorpio overall," he said. "So we really do intend it to be a seamless experience going across that ecosystem of devices, including Windows 10 as much as possible. We're learning and improving in that space on a regular basis."

Games you own on Xbox One will play on Project Scorpio, and in some cases, PC as well (thanks to Play Anywhere). McCarthy said Microsoft's broader goal is to allow developers to reach "the whole canvas of gamers."

Previously, McCarthy said he thinks Scorpio will "wipe out" traditional console generational boundaries.

"That term of an upgrade is gone. As a gamer, it's pretty cool," he said. "Because then I know the games I buy and play today and the controllers I use today are going to work on that machine of tomorrow. And that's the real major step-change."

No Caption Provided

Also in our interview, McCarthy said developers may tailor their games to specific devices, suggesting there may indeed be Scorpio-only games, as had been suggested earlier.

"[Developers] will always want to write to specific capabilities and devices," he explained. "Giving our developers some choice in what they choose to leverage as they do that is key to our whole philosophy moving forward. They've responded well to it as we've shared the plans with them."

Some of the developers who sung the praises of Scorpio in its announcement video included Fallout 4 and Skyrim director Todd Howard, as well as EA Studios boss Patrick Soderlund. Microsoft didn't tell everyone about Scorpio before its announcement, however, as Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata said he didn't find out about it until Microsoft's briefing.

On the other side of the fence, PlayStation president Andrew House also broached the subject of the potential burden new consoles may place on developers. He claimed it will only require a "small but manageable" amount of work to get a game working on both the old and new PlayStation 4 consoles.

Neither Sony nor Microsoft have yet to provided any specifics about what exactly will be required on the part of developers. Developers that ship games on PC are already familiar with releasing games for systems whose power varies depending on hardware configurations.

"That term of an upgrade is gone." No. The term upgrade isn't gone. That's a silly thing to say. The term upgrade will only be gone when we all don't have to buy consoles anymore. Only when the console-to-end-all-consoles is released will the term upgrade be gone. So unless Scorpio is Microsoft's final and future-proof console (unlikely), the term upgrade isn't gone.

@playstationzone: The PS2 was out longer too. It had a hard lock on that gen. Xbox was very late to that party. To change anything. Besides being the strongest console of that gen.

@playstationzone: Funny how you all forget that little detail on how PS2 launched 2 year prior to Xbox. Xbox was new. And for a newbie it did very well.

@liza104_basic: original Xbox did well? What have you been smoking? They lost 6 billion dollars on that console. That is far from doing well.

@liza104_basic: power helps, but in the end its not THE decisive factor for most people when buying a console. its all about the games and how the console makers market their product. although the xbox1 is slightly less powerful than the ps4, if microsoft had not been idiots and alienated much of their fanbase, the xbox1 may have went toe to toe with the ps4. but microsoft messed up terribly at the beginning and the ps4 has, and continues to blow the xbox1 out of the water as far as console sales go. in other words if microsoft dont play their cards right scorpio will suck just like xbox1 does.

That's bull. Nobody makes controllers to last anymore.

If Microsoft wants to do something good they will have project Scorpio also boot Windows 10. They will sell bucketloads for a cheap fairly high grade pc.

I see. Microsoft is trying to have it both ways. For now it will be a Normal Xbox one console variant, later it will become Xbox 720 or whatever. But that sucks to me. Buy when the console cost so much and then after a year or two the price drops so MS can try to sell to everyone else.

Sure you start with those Mindless Bots who gives Microsoft their money. Thus, Microsoft starts with an somewhat small installed base, but newer console will come out that will top the power with comparable pricing. Its a big gamble. I would rather wait. as Next gen will start around 2020.

@Ravenlore_basic: I can handle a typo every once in a while, but your comment was written so poorly I honestly had a horrid time just trying to figure out what you're trying to say, that this is the only response that I can come up with.

I honestly don't care. As someone who has been slowly transitioning into the world of PC gaming, I finally made the complete jump after watching E3. My Xbox One will be probably be my last console unless I get a steam machine at some point, but I will more then likely just get a Steam Link.

I dont get why people believe what those companies say. These companies are used to stab customers owing to so many foolish customers. Scorpio and Neo are very BAD for customers and console life cylce but those people cant see it, they will buy anything without thinking, they will keep preordering unfinished games, buying useless DLCs and they will feel satisfying after being raped. This is the way of capitalism centered at USa. Have a nice day folks.

@kyelo: Comparing two consoles that don't exist when we don't even have official specs or pricing on one of them? Come on now.

You're probably right, but if the XB2 or whatever is as powerful as they say, it could have an edge on the NEO. 2 teraflops is a lot of beef.

As soon as Scorpio hits the market, M$ will stop launching games for x1. They already did this 2 times.

@everson_rm: Didn't they just release Rise of the Tomb Raider on the Xbox 360 last November, 2 years after the Xbox One came out? Surely doesn't support your theory now does it?
