Xbox Boss Talks Scorpio, Cross-Play With PS4

Aaron Greenberg shares his thoughts on two hot topics.

386 Comments

In a new interview with MCV, Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg sheds some new light on two of the more exciting and interesting gaming announcements in recent months: Xbox Scorpio and cross-play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

On the subject of Scorpio, which was announced at E3, Greenberg was asked if the console's reveal has impacted Xbox One S sales. The thinking is that if people know a more powerful console is coming, they might hold out. In fact, GameStop recently said the announcement of Scorpio and Sony's Neo negatively impacted console sales. Greenberg didn't exactly give an answer to this question, however, instead saying Microsoft's focus will be on being "very, very aggressive" when it comes to marketing the Xbox One S.

No Caption Provided

Microsoft will be "really focused on delivering on value with bundles and what you get for the price," he said.

Earlier this month, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said the Scorpio reveal did not "overshadow" Xbox One S. Some people believed Microsoft's announcement of Scorpio might impact Xbox S sales, but apparently that hasn't been the case. The Xbox One outsold the PS4 in the US during July (before the Xbox One S was released) and Microsoft is optimistic about how many consoles it can sell in August.

In the MCV interview, Greenberg again referred to Scorpio as the "most powerful console ever created," featuring a six-teraflop GPU. He also said the system represents the "next big leap forward in innovation for gaming" and something that has never been done before on console. What he's likely referring to is how Microsoft is, for the first time on console, treating Xbox as a family of devices.

The games and accessories you own for Xbox One or Xbox One S will work on Scorpio. For previous console transitions, like Xbox 360 to Xbox One, the games and controllers you had for the older machine were rendered basically useless on the new console. However, backwards compatibility support on Xbox One helped with some of this. Scorpio goes even further and "wipes out" the idea of a console generation and eases the "disruptive" nature of moving to a new platform, according to Microsoft.

"We announced [Scorpio] early at E3 so that we can start working with developers and partners who we know will want to take advantage of that incredible amount of power and have a good year plus to be able to plan for it," Greenberg said.

Scorpio is slated to go on sale in holiday 2017, though pricing has not been announced. For its part, Sony is working on a souped-up PS4, codenamed Neo, which could be officially revealed in September.

Also in the MCV interview, Greenberg was asked for a status update on when, if ever, there might be cross-play support between Xbox One and PS4. As has been the case for months, the ball remains in Sony's court, it seems. One of the first games that could support Xbox One-PS4 cross-play is Rocket League. Developer Psyonix has a technical solution for this, but it's still a matter of politics.

"In terms of connecting with gamers on the PlayStation Network, we fully support them to do that. And I believe they're talking to Sony about it, but I don't know the latest," Greenberg said.

Speaking generally about cross-play, Greenberg said for a game like Rocket League, it "makes sense to allow players on other platforms to compete in the same arenas. We think that is good gamers."

"Our strategy is to put gamers at the center of everything we do, and that has led us to support things like that where a developer wants to connect people on Steam, for example," he added. "They're doing that today."

Can someone honestly tell me why in the hell I should buy an Xbox one (which I was going to do for a few exclusives eventually) when they have announced that basically all of the new games are going to be Cross Platform with Windows 10? My PC is already capable of Scorpio performance, and by the end of 2017, it will be far surpassed. I really don't even understand the point anymore. As far as the PS4 neo goes, I may pick that up eventually since I don't own a PS4 and they will have actual exclusives.

@Orgodemir: ALL opinions are biased that's what makes them opinions and you can't get most exclusives on PC either. I have a ton of Xbox games you won't be playing on PC and that's a FACT not opinion. Nobody cares if you buy an Xbox or not the fact you have to solicit opinions doesn't say much for your confidence either.

@Orgodemir:

Then you don't... they are not asking you to...

If Scorpio is upgradable.

a. hardware all goes to gaming (Not system, not background services, etc)

b. no need to wait for system to boot up -> go through you launcher -> game load -> save load -> unpacking resources, etc (both current consoles support Instant On)

c. You don't need to deal with hw/sw issue yourself (e.g. Google deals with nexus, Microsoft deals with Xbox and Surface, Dell deals with Alienware)

@hiro4476: my PC boots up in 4 seconds. There is literally a beep and it's on to the desktop, then I log into Steam. That's the least of my worries. The hardware all goes to gaming but it's still surpassed rather quickly, and that is why the specs are still lower than a mid range PC and will still be. Do you know how advanced PC will be by the end of 2017? 6Tflops is already available and it will cost less by the time Scorpio comes out. Also, you're forgetting something. Do you know how much more I spent on Console games as opposed to the PC? PC games are cheaper, y ou save so much money on software. If you're an avid gamer it adds up. These consoles are becoming more and more like PCs with less horsepower. They aren't even trying to be different anymore.

@Orgodemir:

Not that I care about the price...

I game on console at home, and on Alienware when I'm away / overseas.

(You can't really bring your rig with you, can you?)

If games on pc supports Xbox cloud save (not XPA title), I wouldn't mind buying two copies if I really want it.

I use my Alienware for game programming / study and new tech experiments. My girl uses hers for music production.

I used to build my rig (when I was a kid) Now I'm just lazy, and lazy to deal with hw/sw issue (if there's any), I got better things to do.

No matter how fast you pc is,

os boot up, move your mouse to the launcher, double click, move your mouse to game list, double click, game load, company logos, title screen, select save, save load, resource unpacking, start from save point, replay till where you left off...

On consoles... turn on console -> where you left off (Not last save point)

@simplytheebest: lol Red dead is on PS3, Most forza games are on Xbox, I like your save of BUT BUT NHL 16 and 17 aren't on X360! So they aren't on PS4 either? How the hell can you tout a game's exclusives while including games that AREN'T EXCLUSIVE TO XONE. I swear to god you're braindead. "Go back to your puny PS4 that I don't own, to play games that are ON PS4. LOL NHL IS ON PS4. Most of the games you mentioned are ON 360. And the new games are going to be ON PC. Which means, ZERO REASON TO OWN AN XONE. Go back to the Cod match you came from. I guarantee you that you are a low expectations trash COD fan. Guarantee 100% you play COD and buy every one.

@simplytheebest: "gaystation" that's a new one. I own a PC that makes your Xone look like a toaster, even the Scorpio will look like a toaster before it even comes out at the high end. Stop touting a console that's going to put all it's games on PC and will be inferior to my PC in the first place. The only reason I play consoles is for EXCLUSIVES. and I have a 360 to play all your "Backwards compatible" games to begin with. You're the worst salesman. Maybe you can't afford more than one console. If you think Sony doesn't have exclusives worth playing, then neither does Xone. LMAO you said Sunset Overdrive. GAME OF THE YEAR. RAVE REVIEWS, SYSTEM SELLER! Get out of here. I liked it better when it was called INfamous.

@Orgodemir: Not all new games, basically just Microsoft published games like Gears, Forza and Halo.

This is awesome though, my "PCMR" buddies can play games like Gears and Halo with me now!

If you played MP games a lot you would understand the point of consoles, FYI.

@gamer162594: consoles would not have MP without PC.....i dont get this delusion it would have happened with out the decade of people playing on PC first......and im sorry but you still dont have any game on a console able to run a 800 to a single server.....yeah that is not a typo.......planet side 2 set a record for having just over a 1000 people on one server not to long ago......but some how consoles are the home of MP.....NOT......

@smokerob79: actually......PC gaming, by the very definition of a Personal Computer against what defines a Game Console was not the first to see MP (multiplayer) games. MP gaming started with game consoles, and by your logic that means pc would never have seen MP if not for said consoles...either by the definition of a game console and due to not being a personal computer as far back as 1958, or if you want to move goal posts to a brand named box & arcade cabinets and the Magnivox Odyssey in the early 70's, all playing the FIRST MP video games ever made.

Ah... planetside 2.... a game also on console. It did set a mp record on pc, which much planning and effort, and yeah the console version has a reduced maximum server population, it still could technically support over 4800 players per server.. if you could evwn get that many people to play the game which is another issue. While it got a few decent reviews, the game is simply poorly made, poorly supported, visually simplistic and the variety of heuristics complicates drastically the ability to even interact locally with a large number if players, let alone for the server to support them..... which is why it barely beat out another game on the MP record and purely out of an effort to beat a record, not because it was good or even played well. This was a feat... for an fps type game... many other game types which are MP eclipse that figure many-fold.

Also, MP does not only mean online... or massive populations. Also, I would argue that companies are losing a cash cow in game subscription and transaction revenue by not targeting console. While there are MMO on console the number is far less than pc, still, the mote popular ones which are on pc also show strong population support on console. Blizzqrd, for example, is really missing out by not making the client available to comsole. Thats nearly 300 mil possible consumers (while surely not all would play it if they tried, NONE will do it if they don't). Such a old, and simple by design title with lore and history and community would do well on a console (ff11 was on ps2 and pc together.. and using linux 5.4 I played WoW up until bliz patched to 3.0 on my original fat ps3. It clearly isn't impossible, especially considering that many other, less well-to-do companies have done it right.)

One is not truly better than the other... this line of thought is not conducive to the industry, the craft, nor the community.

Do you play BLOPS3? IMPOSSIBLE to get in a DLC game on PC, IMPOSSIBLE! I can easily get in one on console everyday. Plus everyone has a controller and no hackers to worry about.

@gamer162594: so basically the only reason you'd ever buy an Xbox console? Trust me dude, I've owned both Xboxes before this one, and all playstations before this one. I owned all nintendo systems before the Wii U, but this Gen I don't own ANY of the new consoles because it's not worth it to me. What am I truly missing out on? A handful of games. MIcrosoft needs to step up their Exclusives. I actually love Gears and Halo, but not enough to buy an Xbox when I can play Gears and Halo on PC anyway. Also, Forza will be on PC. Now tell me what is left for MS exclusivity? I do want the rare collection and I almost bought an Xbone just for that, and I would love to play Sea of Thieves, but to buy a whole console for 3 games? I can't justify it. Plenty of PC gamers play MP games. You say Halo and Gears when Halo and Gears are not even couch Co op anymore. You can play Co Op online. Plus you do realize you can play PC games with a controller and on a TV right? I play half my games on an Xbox one controller lol

@gamer162594: there are and have been hackers and cheesers on Consoles. There are some PC services that are less vulnerable than consoles. IN the current age it's only a matter of time, PC or console. I remember playing COD Modern warfare 2 and there were tons of cheaters. Larger player base depends on the game. If you're talking about shooters, maybe, but CS and CSGO are hugely popular even now. But if you're talking about Multiplayer as in MMO RTS or MOBA then that's clearly not true, which is why the esports money for these games vs Console games are so insane.

@smokerob79: Couch-play in the loosest term doesn't just involve local anything. Just the general idea of being able to switch on a console and play a game with little-no hastle makes people buy a console. The idea is still very alive. Would you ever see parents buy their child a PC equal to a console for their first gaming machine (given that this is done at very early age)? I don't. I'd buy my kid a console than a PC for the obvious reason stated above.

@HD_ITeRRoRiZeI: The 'theory' of couch play is still a thing, or should I say the 'culture' of couch play. But the technical reality in recent years goes against that.

GPUs with tons of outputs and comprehensive TV support. HDMI cables. Full controller support. Big Picture modes. In home streaming. You name it. The PC is every bit as comfortable and adept for couch play.

It's simply a different box, in a field of many boxes.

There's just the old resistance from console/living room culture. Or, for example, how often do you see stuff like, "It's hard to set up a PC, I just want to put a game in and play" or the ever-popular, "I work all day on a computer. The last thing I want to do is get home and play my games on a PC."

The usual suspects, often from people creating an obstacle in theory, when in practice all the features are now present to make couch/living room gameplay very intuitive on PC.

@runstalker: True but use my example above.

You find a lot of younger gamers (those with their first machine) will probably be a console. I mean put it this way. If you had a young kid and they were interested in games, and they'd yet to get their first gaming machine (whatever platform), wouldn't you buy them a console? PC is just impractical for that demographic. I'd never dream of letting a child go lose of my PC, simply because everything can be changed at your fingertips.

The first thing a child sees when they power up a console is the game they want to play. There just isn't that same simple procedure on PC. Especially for that huge, younger, demographic.

@Orgodemir: it's only a matter of time before Sony and Nintendo follow suit and offer a Windows 10 style service that's allows every game connected through there brand.

But it comes down to preference just as much as it does about what platform you own these days. My preference is not to go out a fork out thousands for a pc just to get the best of graphics, I'm good with optimisation and have always enjoyed a pad over keyboard n mouse, I'm not picky, and I enjoy my console compared to my pc, which I won't lie, my pc does need an upgrade but even if I had the money I'd rather wait for Scorpio now..

@xzerocarnagex:

The big difference is that Sony are basically a hardware manufacturer so they make their money from console sales and the game revenue it generates. Sony exclusives make gamers buy their console. The more that buy their console, the bigger the user base, so devs spend more time polishing the port that pays their wages. That sells more PS4 games with Sony taking the revenue from the game sales.

Microsoft on the other hand are basically a software company, so they want all their customers brought under their operating system. MS have a lot to gain from that. They actually want to make PC a close system like a super console by only allowing MS games to run on the Windows OS, so they get all the revenue.

Sony have nothing to gain from that. Their exclusives are made by purpose build studios to supply high quality content for their hardware. You may get old games being allowed into the wild once they stop selling on the Playstation. But current exclusives are most potent if they remain doing the job they were design for.

Nintendo are in a different position again. They cannot compete with the hardware battle so their strength is in the games. Eventually, they could just do a Sega and drop hardware altogether and simply sell their games to PC and everyone else like you suggested.

@Orgodemir: Point blank, you shouldn't. MS doesn't care about hardware sells anymore, they are moving more towards a service provider. In fact buy the exclusive for PC so that they make good sells and MS will continue to do it.

@Darknight765:

But why would Sony hand over Uncharted, The Last Of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone to PC so MS can make a profit out of being the service provider, when Sony would get very little out of it. Sony exclusives are designed to promote Playstation sales so Sony can be the service provider, taking the revenue from their games.

If you want Sony exclusives you have to buy the Sony console and let them be your service provider. Buying a PC won't give you access to them.

@justerthought: Microsoft makes zero revenue from PC games unless it's their own game or it's sold on the Windows Store.

@zeebali: Depends where you're looking, in terms of which step along the 'supply chain'. If the game lists a version of Windows in its required specs, then yes, at some point in the chain Microsoft has earned a prerequisite sale from you and the associated percentages. Just saying.

I thought Phil Spencer said he doesn't goal the team on PS4 sales?

Xbox One hardware sales were down %10 year over year but they're celebrating because they topped the PS4 one month in the US?

At least fat dumb*ss Greenberg admits that their sales are caused by fake temporary hype based on lies you told at E3.

Scorpio will have exclusives and Xbox fanboys are rushing out to trade in their fat Xbone VCR for a slimmer Xbone VCR. It's laughable !!!!

Hows it feel to be Greenberg's lap dog Eddie? Trying to damage control for Xbone by reporting Greenberg's lies and PR spins for him? LOL

@xboticon: your stupid if you think no one will be trading in a ps4 or completely missing a neo, or getting both machines, people will get there hands on a Scorpio, there will be a % that move back to Microsoft from Sony as much as there would be people trading in there old machines. There have already been fantastic Xbox one s sales. But to make a dumb ass comment like Xbox one players will trade in one console for the newer console when same thing will exactly happen between the standard ps4 to the neo, is a completely retarded thing to say.

I don't see how you fanboys don't think about what you say because when.it comes down to it both consoles and there latter versions have been very impressive and continue to improve.

And the only exclusives Xbox one Scorpio will get will be for vr, those with 4k tv's for instance or the power of Scorpio will be able to play to the power of the machine, but the players with the older models still will still see the games, just not in there full glory, just as I imagine Sony will be doing this.

Don't jump to assumptions, you way wrong on many places.

@xzerocarnagex:

I wouldn't be too confident that every game on Scorpio will make it to the XB1. PS4 Neo is closely related to the vanilla PS4 using a very similar architecture. Sony are basically just upgrading something that was a great design.

The XB1 was a disaster so they are not even going to bother upgrading it apart from the XB1 S, The have ditched the design and started from scratch with a totally new architecture. If anything, the Scorpio is closer to a PS4 architecture than an XB1. That means porting games between Scorpio and the XB1 will be expensive, while porting games between the PS4 Neo and PS4 will be very cheap. It's a lot easier for Sony to make that promise.

That means you are more likely to see game parity between PS4 Neo and PS4 than you are with XB Scorpio and XB1. And the fake backwards compatibility of re-coding selected 360 games to work on XB1 then putting them on a server for download won't work this time. Because instead of simpler 360 games coming upwards, you will have more complex games from Scorpio coming downwards. The conversion will require a lot of work to skin it down to size so it will run on an XB1.

So like I say, don't assume all Scorpio games with make it to XB1. Cost and the amount of work will prevent it.

Next generation hardware after Scorpio I suppose. Maybe 6, 8 years later.

But come to think if it... It's all win 10. It will probably still run but slower. (Same as what we have in pc gaming)

@justerthought: x86, same OS, similar or identical instruction sets. The challenge isn't so much compatibility, but more about addressing 'best case' demographics/installed user base.

Considering the conditions as stated above, both the Neo and Scorpio will have to carve out a significant user base of their own before it makes sense - financially - for developers to push for exclusives or really expanded Neo and Scorpio modes in PS4 and XB1 titles.

Otherwise the risk vs. best case sales just won't be worth it.

Of course, making the Neo and Scorpio flagship standalone devices isn't the point in the near future. They represent the premium high end for power users to experience higher fidelity, better performing versions of standard games released for their lower spec cousins.

In that way, their purpose is pretty clear. And clearly both companies have done enough research to indicate that there's a market there to tap into.

How big is that market segment? Only time will tell.

Win10 is the key, Sony fanboy

@justerthought: The main difference between ESRAM and DRAM based GDDR5 is data refresh process which is transparent from the software's POV. Both GDDR5 chip and ESRAM has full duplex links.

The no special software for CPU's SRAM based caches and DRAM based DDR3/DDR4.

Under DirectX11 and 12, ESRAM memory location is not directly addressable by CPU just like PC's dGPU VRAM.

@Thanatos2k: And another no life fanboy, just like Xboticon, joins the discussion. Seriously, it's not that serious, ALL OF THIS WON'T BE RELEASED TILL 2016! Except for cross-platform. I'm pretty sure Xbox and PS4 fanboys will make numerous reasons why this is bad, but it's not bad really.

The ball is not in Sony's court, msft needs to drop the xbl only requisite first.

And yeah, scorpio announcement and slashed original model prices is why the initial xb1s shipments are still piled in shelves..

@Mirimon78: where to please? In the UK you got no chance of getting a Xbox One S unless you pay through the nose at CEX. To go into a shop and buy one off the shelf is pretty non existent at the moment bevause they are all sold out. They even go for top dollar on the Facebook gaming pages. Same can't be said about the PS4 or PS4 Slim
