Xbox Boss Talks Scorpio, Cross-Play With PS4

Aaron Greenberg shares his thoughts on two hot topics.

In a new interview with MCV, Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg sheds some new light on two of the more exciting and interesting gaming announcements in recent months: Xbox Scorpio and cross-play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

On the subject of Scorpio, which was announced at E3, Greenberg was asked if the console's reveal has impacted Xbox One S sales. The thinking is that if people know a more powerful console is coming, they might hold out. In fact, GameStop recently said the announcement of Scorpio and Sony's Neo negatively impacted console sales. Greenberg didn't exactly give an answer to this question, however, instead saying Microsoft's focus will be on being "very, very aggressive" when it comes to marketing the Xbox One S.

No Caption Provided

Microsoft will be "really focused on delivering on value with bundles and what you get for the price," he said.

Earlier this month, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said the Scorpio reveal did not "overshadow" Xbox One S. Some people believed Microsoft's announcement of Scorpio might impact Xbox S sales, but apparently that hasn't been the case. The Xbox One outsold the PS4 in the US during July (before the Xbox One S was released) and Microsoft is optimistic about how many consoles it can sell in August.

In the MCV interview, Greenberg again referred to Scorpio as the "most powerful console ever created," featuring a six-teraflop GPU. He also said the system represents the "next big leap forward in innovation for gaming" and something that has never been done before on console. What he's likely referring to is how Microsoft is, for the first time on console, treating Xbox as a family of devices.

The games and accessories you own for Xbox One or Xbox One S will work on Scorpio. For previous console transitions, like Xbox 360 to Xbox One, the games and controllers you had for the older machine were rendered basically useless on the new console. However, backwards compatibility support on Xbox One helped with some of this. Scorpio goes even further and "wipes out" the idea of a console generation and eases the "disruptive" nature of moving to a new platform, according to Microsoft.

"We announced [Scorpio] early at E3 so that we can start working with developers and partners who we know will want to take advantage of that incredible amount of power and have a good year plus to be able to plan for it," Greenberg said.

Scorpio is slated to go on sale in holiday 2017, though pricing has not been announced. For its part, Sony is working on a souped-up PS4, codenamed Neo, which could be officially revealed in September.

Also in the MCV interview, Greenberg was asked for a status update on when, if ever, there might be cross-play support between Xbox One and PS4. As has been the case for months, the ball remains in Sony's court, it seems. One of the first games that could support Xbox One-PS4 cross-play is Rocket League. Developer Psyonix has a technical solution for this, but it's still a matter of politics.

"In terms of connecting with gamers on the PlayStation Network, we fully support them to do that. And I believe they're talking to Sony about it, but I don't know the latest," Greenberg said.

Speaking generally about cross-play, Greenberg said for a game like Rocket League, it "makes sense to allow players on other platforms to compete in the same arenas. We think that is good gamers."

"Our strategy is to put gamers at the center of everything we do, and that has led us to support things like that where a developer wants to connect people on Steam, for example," he added. "They're doing that today."

sony wants nothing to do with this....why do we keep seeing stuff on it??

referring to is how Microsoft is, for the first time on console, treating Xbox as a family of devices.????.....HAHAHAHA are they crazy??? PS2 and first gen 3's did what they are wanting to do by the new console playing the old games years ago.......i get some people will say its not the same thing but truthfully it is other then using the old controllers......

for me i would love to cross plat as long as they included PC version of the games as well.......game would be supported longer on the server side this way and you would be able to play something like bad company 2 again on a console.....

@smokerob79: no it is not the same. first gen ps3 could play ps2 games, but ps2 couldn't play ps3 games.what Microsoft is attempting is on a whole different level than just backward compatibility. think more of it as backward + forward compatibility on the local machine where as all games release in past plus future will be able to play on all machines going forward. (never been done before). they're not just doing software compatibility but also hardware as all peripherals from xbox one and S will work on their new console plus PC (never been done before). they have buy once play anywhere which allows a users to buy a game and download it on 2 generations of consoles plus PC (never been done before).

if you have some proof that these have been done before then I stand corrected but I don't remember any of those have been done before in the console space.

@buginthesystem: Wii made use of gamecube controllers for fame cube games, wiiU used the same wii controllers and peripherals. The forward compatibility can only last so long. Imagine trying to run any current game on an OG xbox or ps2? It'll work for a few years, and then something has to give... or games will be held back by previous hardware.

I was thinking about getting an Xbox One S to be my entry for the X1 series but now that I've heard that they have an even more powerful console on the way I'm waiting on that.

What isn't mentioned here when it comes to ps-xbox crossplay is that square recently mentioned the progress in getting FFXIV to xbox and that it's hard because microsoft demands the option for xbox players to play only with other xbox players. Which obviously won't work for an MMO.

@HD_ITeRRoRiZeI: No, he's right about that. It's not as sinister as it seems. They just said, in the interest of looking out for their XBL players first, they would ensure that all cross-network/cross-play games would nonetheless include a 'pure' XBL option for those who wish to play strictly within XBL with other XBL players.

It's a reasonable option to maintain.

And yes, Square Enix commented on this policy, because their form of cross-play involves mixing players -- I.e., no dedicated shards for one platform/network.

@HD_ITeRRoRiZeI: I can't find the exact transcription. But I did find one place where it was mentioned recently. Doubt I can link it here so instead go to youtube and look for mrhappy's video "New FFXIV Info: Patch 3.4 Release Date, 4.0 Schedule...." where around 3 minutes he talks about it.

Also, I never said they didn't take the first step. They did and there's also a twitter from Phil Spencer saying they'd love to have FFXIV on XBox One. Doesn't change that they have certain regulations however.

If I find more information I'll link it as well.

I made a joke once about FF15 not being released before the PS5, now it's getting closer to that being the reality... They just called it something else.... Just like Zelda and the damn NX. "Don't buy games buy consoles!"

The Xbox One S is more for people who still have a 360. Also you can't enjoy the HDR benefits with a 4k TV. No point in buying an Xbox One S if you don't have 4k. Just wait though because once people realize Scorpio will not be cheap the Xbox One S sales will skyrocket.

@thomasn7: do you mean without a 4k tv?

I agree, I'm expecting the Scorpio to be ridiculously expensive.

One reason to get and XB1s is if, like me, the buyer suffered from the constant controller disconnects on the standard XB1. Even the old controllers (non bluetooth) have the disconnect issue fixed some how.

They better not think releasing a Game that runs under 30FPS is alright on the current Consoles and if you want 30 or more you gotta upgrade, sorry but 30 or more should be the standard not under.

I do not think MS is killing the Xbox One with the Scorpio announcement. It makes a lot of people hesitant for sure, but the fact of the matter is, Xbox One is out now, and Scorpio won't be for at least an other year. Also, the specs are more in the speculation or 'what we want it to be' than hard facts. That we'll have to see on the finished product.

For me personally, I'm gonna buy an Xbox One S soon, as I was not really convinced by the original product but this one looks more interesting to me with the decreased size, removed power brick and increased feature set. And what if the Scorpio will be good and worth the asking price? I can still move my S to my parent's house and play the same games in HD when I'm visiting.

On the matter of cross-play, I welcome it. More people playing a game online means a longer life cycle for the product and less server shutdowns for games. I don't see a downside to it. Question is, is Sony willing to jump onboard for such a thing? Or Nintendo for that matter? We'll see.

@HellWolfHun: The specs aren't "what we want it to be" . They're based on AMD's upcoming Vega architecture which allows them 6TFLOPS GPU power and 320GB/s RAM bandwidth which also would suggest it will have 12GB RAM. It was a smart announcement because people can look forward to the games they own or are going to purchase now getting performance patches and some VR patches in the future.

@HellWolfHun: dont forget PC dude....if you want true server support nothing beats PC as a ton of games that are 10 years old still have active servers.....we already have cross play with PS4 on a couple of games like War Thunder so it can be done.....

@HellWolfHun: I agree with cross-play, but on the business side you stand to lose some of the lead you've already gained. That's probably why Sony is hesitant to open up to cross-play right now. With PC it's easier because you're not competing against that platform, but with Xbox you are. If you can essentially play games with anyone on both Xbox and PS then there's no need to choose one over the other which comes down to exclusives and preferences and since some casuals don't care so much about exclusives you lose part of that consumer base.

@G-Legend: i dont see that....if anything they get more people playing games.....if we had a truly open gaming world were every game could be played on any hardware form you chose it would sell more games and consoles.....but they need to include PC and its already been done with a couple of games that can be played on the PS4......

If you peoples used their brains and stopped being ignorant, they'd realise that the new console doesn't appeal to people who don't want it. Not everyone wants to dish out on the premium product. Not everyone buys a Ferrari for their first car, just like not everyone will buy Scorpio and replace their current console. Some may, but most probably won't. However, I can gaurentee with this being probably one of the biggest leaps for a console, that a lot of people will want a piece.

Those saying this will kill the S, should learn to think before they give their opinion. It's for two entirely different demographics, therefore it will work.

I see it as a "good, better, best" option for gamers, and I love it. if you're not into having the flashiest graphics and the ultra settings of a high end PC (best option) get an Xbox One (S). If you want something better than the S but not as expensive as a high end PC, get a Scorpio.

the biggest ? is how expensive the Scorpio will be. 4K GAME capable and VR compatible PCs are not cheap. but if they make it slightly cheaper than a high end PC, I'm sure a lot of people will want it.

@HD_ITeRRoRiZeI: I agree, the only way Scorpio can hinder the sales of Xbone S by selling it at the price point or even a little above it and MS is not going to do that. The nice point if anything is the ability to play a game regardless of what model you have and the controllers, etc can also be used. However, I would wait for MS to announce the price of the Scorpio.

@lonewolf1044: The Xbox One S will most likely cost $249.95 when the Scorpio launches in over a year. So $499 is DOUBLE the cost of the S and a good value for Scorpio

@lonewolf1044: True, but we know that they won't do that. I think the price point is at least £425/$500, something around that. They will make it a competitive price to both console but it need to be carefully assessed.

Those people were smarter than average for their time, compared to now, they are all extremely ignorant.

Alas religion still exists due to a lack of critical thinking. The more understanding there is, the less room for beliefs. It is literally that simple once you remove all the arbitrary notions.

Agreed. Mankind doesn't deserve to survive the next world war, apocalypse or cataclysm. Einstein once said "I know not with what weapons WW3 will be fought, but WW4 will be fought with sticks & stones". Mankind is that fucking retarded that we'd still find something ridiculously petty to fight each other over even after we send ourselves back to the Stone Age.

@smokerob79: 16 years in the British Army (2nd BTN P.W.R.R.) with 2 tours of Afghanistan and 3 in Iraq and I actually miss war, not the war per say but I miss the brotherhood that being engaged in life and death situations brings out in men.

No civvy friend of mine is as trusted as the blokes I served with (I'd go as far as to say that I've distanced myself from my civvy friends because serving in the military showed me what a good friend really is), you really come to know a person when you spend 6 months+ fighting together.
