Xbox Acquires Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Developer

More RPGs could be on the way to Xbox platforms.

Microsoft has announced it will acquire Obsidian Entertainment, developer of role-playing games including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Alpha Protocol, and Pillars of Eternity, among others. The announcement was made during X018, an Xbox fan event that is taking place in Mexico City.

"As one of the industry's premiere RPG developers, we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to add their expertise to Microsoft Studios, while enabling the studio to preserve its unique culture and build on its talent and vision to fully realize their creative ambitions," Microsoft said in a statement.

This is one of two acquisitions Microsoft revealed intentions of making during X018. It is also set to acquire inXile Entertainment, the studio behind Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera, and The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep. As Microsoft notes itself, these two studios share heritage and develop games in similar genres. The platform holder has said both Obsidian and inXile "will continue to operate autonomously and bring their unique talents, IP, and expertise to Microsoft Studios as they build new RPG experiences for our players and fans."

Microsoft also notes that with these two new studios as part of its family, Microsoft Studios is now made up of "13 distinct and diverse game development teams." During E3 2018, Microsoft confirmed acquisitions of Santa Monica-based The Initiative, a new studio led by Darrell Gallagher, former head of studio for Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics.

Additionally, State of Decay developer Undead Labs, Forza Horizon studio Playground Games, We Happy Few developer Compulsion Games, and Ninja Theory, the British developer of Heavenly Sword, DmC: Devil May Cry, and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, were also added to its studio portfolio.

As long as the CRPGs keep coming and not exclusive, I don't mind.

It makes sense I guess since both companies are pretty big crpg devs, but still, I dunno. I don't exactly trust Microsoft. Hopefully they actually make use of their talents.

I would be incredibly excited if they could just announce an Alpha Protocol sequel... but I know it's really unlikely.

@godfather830: I think Sega owns Alpha Protocol. That game was a hot mess, but I do kinda hope Obsidian tries something else like it in the future. Just, you know, finish it this time.

I see this as a good thing for Xbox services. They have clearly been missing certain types of games, but I would expect too much from them in the shorter term

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but KOTOR was Bioware. Obsidion developed KOTOR 2. Both great games, but not the same thing.

@moonwatcher99: Kotor 2 had a more original storyline unlike Kotor 1 which was a rehash of episode 4.

@moonwatcher99: Moon watcher,,,i wanna tell ya a short story about KOTOR. if youre willing..

2006/07 I got a new caming PC and gifted my old one to my wife. I fealt cheesy and ended up getting her a new HP.

medium specs with a uber video card. etc etc.

AND she agreed to play KOTOR 1 w/ me & hopefully KOTOR2..

And by " with me " I mean our C's we're side by side separate desks...

~but after KOTOR1 again I was bored..and she looooved the game btw...It led to her being a gamer..i'll briefly mention this @ the end...

~So we started KOTOR2 and like I said, "I was bored af! " so I decided to FLip the script and played Dual pistols instea dof lightsaber..

OMG what a experience....I had sooo much fun that she replayed KOTOR2 w/ pistols and I went to kotor1 to play it with pistols...I cant remember if I diddo pistols on kotor1 or redid kotor2 w/ with her..

~So that's the story. I genjoyed it so much that I was able to get a 25 year old hottie to play a game like KOTOR2 & without a lightsaber. which led to her emmediately plying StarWars Empire @ War & to this day she is a gamer..not a power gamer like me but she always has a game going. more on this goes from boring to stale. so whatevs...

~But yeah man EVERYONE should try KOTOR2 with Dual Pistols. it's a whole different experience..

I honestly can't remember if KOTOR1 has the option and even if they do it wont be as good as KOTOR2 as KOTOR outshines KOTOR1 in every single way EXCEPT STORY...

@sippio: Cool. Personally, I enjoyed the story in KOTOR 2, although I will say it is 150% better with the Restored Content Mod. I seriously feel bad for anyone who doesn't have the option to play that, and it's a shame you can't use it on consoles. (Because honestly I prefer console playing, even though I have a bunch of games on pc.) I've played all kinds of styles on both 1 and 2, including an honest-to-god Force heavy Guardian, which is supposed to be a contradiction. However, it's still only right that Bioware is respected for their accomplishment with the first, after all it paved the way for the second. And Obsidion is not Bioware. (Now if only we could get KOTOR 3, instead of that MMO garbage.)

So the Xbox division are purchasing studios instead of creating new ones. They'll finally be getting exclusives at the expense of gamers dedicated to other platforms losing games.

They have the means and right to do so of course, but this lazy and unmotivated attitude shows why they finish last.

@cboye18: They already created a studio called the coalition, they're planning to open another one too.

EDIT: They also opened a new studio called "the initiative" and are still making more.

@cboye18: True. Unlike Sony, which certainly didn’t buy Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Guerilla Games, Psygnosis, Eidetic, Media Molecule, Zipper or Evolution. No, sir. All created from scratch and not bought at all.

That's some good news... perhaps. It seems Rare was already dead when Microsoft acquire them, but others think Microsoft itself destroyed rare. So who knows, if ninja theory and obsidian ended up destroyed, mediocre exclusives and etc.. Then Microsoft is the problem. I hope not, I am not a xbox fan, definitely not a micro$oft fan.. But these devs with a huge budget, the sky is the limit. And M$ can always fuse these dev teams and create a whole new studio, that has potential as well.

@gleencross: remember when Bungie wa scomplaining about Microsoft being dictator over them before hey left?

The grass is always greener..

imagine if Destiny was a Microsoft exlusive?!?!?

holy! awesomeness..

im no fanboy but I hate publisher control. esp Activision for turning Bungie into the most hated vile scum in all of gaming..

All the good people left bungie & all that remained w'e're the greed & yes men...

@sippio: some people who where in bungie stayed with Microsoft in the studio 343. also if u thought bungie was bad with activision well, a Chinese internet company now has majority share of bungie, they have controlled allot of the largest releases in china thought the country laws. they are also the one developing Diablo Immortal. so far, nothing of the comapny i like. so u can expect any game released in the future by bungie to be swamped with micotransitions.

This is a huge pickup for MS.

Now let's sit back and see people running in explaining why this is bad despite the same people saying MS needs more studios and games.

@KaptenHaddock: With Xbox's new stance that all their first party stuff with be Play Anywhere titles, that seems pretty unlikely.

Seems odd to me that Microsoft is buying small to mid size developers it has little to no history with.

@fatsnoopy: You think its odd that they are buying highly talented developers? Its exactly what they need! My concern is that they'll force certain business models upon them.

@UltimateBastard: I think it’s odd because usually when a publisher or console manufacturer buys a developer they are or have worked on games together, where this just feels like Microsoft is playing developer whack’a’mole with a bag of cash

Well it's clear that CRPGs are no longer in the picture, there's no way they'll make anything that isn't console friendly now. Too bad, they were getting really good at it.

But they better still keep releasing on PC.

Well, lets see what an MS backed Obsidian can do in terms of an RPG game. If they can get close to SW:KotOR, I will be happy.

These great independent studios are trying to compete in this day and age of online GAAS era. It’s getting hard out here for allot of studios. Glad to see MS picking up so much talent got damn!
