Xbox Acquires Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Developer

More RPGs could be on the way to Xbox platforms.

Microsoft has announced it will acquire Obsidian Entertainment, developer of role-playing games including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Alpha Protocol, and Pillars of Eternity, among others. The announcement was made during X018, an Xbox fan event that is taking place in Mexico City.

"As one of the industry's premiere RPG developers, we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to add their expertise to Microsoft Studios, while enabling the studio to preserve its unique culture and build on its talent and vision to fully realize their creative ambitions," Microsoft said in a statement.

This is one of two acquisitions Microsoft revealed intentions of making during X018. It is also set to acquire inXile Entertainment, the studio behind Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera, and The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep. As Microsoft notes itself, these two studios share heritage and develop games in similar genres. The platform holder has said both Obsidian and inXile "will continue to operate autonomously and bring their unique talents, IP, and expertise to Microsoft Studios as they build new RPG experiences for our players and fans."

Microsoft also notes that with these two new studios as part of its family, Microsoft Studios is now made up of "13 distinct and diverse game development teams." During E3 2018, Microsoft confirmed acquisitions of Santa Monica-based The Initiative, a new studio led by Darrell Gallagher, former head of studio for Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics.

Additionally, State of Decay developer Undead Labs, Forza Horizon studio Playground Games, We Happy Few developer Compulsion Games, and Ninja Theory, the British developer of Heavenly Sword, DmC: Devil May Cry, and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, were also added to its studio portfolio.

WOW. They literally got the band back together. Interplay is about as whole as it's been in 20 years.

For everyone who claims to love Fallout 1 and 2, go play Wasteland 2. Fkn spot-on. Very tactical, HUGE choice impacts.

@masterfrankgrimes: Not sure what difference it makes what platform you are playing an RPG on? Unless you're talking strictly 1st party RPG's in which case, Nintendo has some pretty damned good 1st party RPG's as well. So does PC. The vast majority are multiplat anyway.

Good news. Hopefully MS will do what they should have done with BioWare and ME1 in 2007 (don’t think they made an offer to buy them but could be wrong).

Let them do their own thing but not release CRPGs at the same time as Larian. No wonder they got slaughtered :(

Too late in the gen to improve things for the Xbox one, but the Nextbox might get some exclusives that are worth something to rpg gamers, Or Obsidian will mess up and get shut down like alot of other studios Microsoft has bought out over the years.

@Runeweaver: That's a pretty narrow view of things but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Some view this time as a boon for Xbox One as RDR2 is almost night and day better on the XOX than the 4PRO. Not everyone jumps on every first party title just because. Games going forward appear to scale to newer hardware more than ever. The way the Xbox One X enhances gameplay is likely to continue going forward. It's never too late. Microsoft has too much cash, way more than Sony to just drop out like it seems some wish would happen. Competition in a market is going to help things grow. It would be nice if everyone just enjoyed video games again, regardless of which platform they are on.

@Thretosix: When did I attack the Xbox?, Perhaps your comprehension skills are being effected by your fanboy glasses.

All I said was buying those studios won't improve sales this gen, which they wont because of the time it takes to make a game.

@Runeweaver: "Too late in this gen to improve." Article is about the Xbox, your comment clearly dogs Xbox's ability for success. As I stated it's never too late because of the continuing backwards support. I said your viewpoint was narrow, I guess I hit a sensitive spot basically stating that these efforts will improve things regardless of your comment. Whatever the next Xbox console as you call it Nextbox, is going to continue to push enhancements for the Xbox One X, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Xbox. This is a long term strategy agreed. There is no mention of end of support for the XOS and the XOX that we know of. To flat out say that the Xbox One won't capitalize on this is a narrow viewpoint, which may turn out, but to flatly state it as if it's fact is just way too early to tell. You can dance around the topic of fanboy glasses. I only pointed out both systems to point out that Microsoft's history doesn't support your post. With the way Microsoft is enhancing games. Even games made now will likely get enhanced on the next generation. If Microsoft isn't abandoning the original Xbox, I highly doubt they will be abandoning the Xbox One. No fanboy here, I know you wanted to spin my post of "It would be nice if everyone just enjoyed video games again, regardless of what platform they are on.", as fanboy glasses. I'm sorry I find gaming fun regardless of platform currently own a PS4, PS3, XOX, and a decent gaming PC. Owned gaming systems going back to Atari and Colecovision, still have many of my original Atari cartridges. Owned a Neo-Geo, TurboGraphics 16, Sega Master system, Genesis, Dreamcast, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, N64, Gamecube. The list goes on. I see your response, but you have no idea when we will see any games come from this like myself. With things like Game Pass it really opens things up for people, I personally don't subscribe to it, but Microsoft's approach looks to do what we all really want, bring more games to gamers. Your original post appears as your absolute answer, as if there is no grey area for you to be wrong. This is what I don't agree with. Realistically we both don't really know, that's all I'm saying.

Too bad about obsidian but they had too since their last game did not sell well. Xbox really does take note on gamer feedback regarding we do not want multiplayer only games.

@sakaixx: Where were they up until now then? All their "exclusives" are primarily focused on multiplayer, many also having microtransactions. Now they're also buying up great single player studios instead of making and growing their own. They're absolute scum.

I love Obsidian's games and while it is great that they now have the financial backing to make better products, I'm a bit bummed that their PC games will now be exclusive to Windows 10 and the Windows Store.

@xshinobi: While true, the PC crowd is much better at rallying and protesting than other crowds, so, while they didn't care much about Gears 4 and Halo 5, seeing a traditional PC dev restricted to the Windows store will likely trigger some kind of significant response, plus there is no denying PC centric games sell better on Steam.

@sippio: As an RPG: Really great things such as the order which you choose to do missions, play style, dialog can effect out comes way down the line. For an Rpg fan is really great, just make sure you have at least one ranged combat tree for boss fight as the game didn't take into account that you might not allocate your point there. There are some miss fires but over all it's an enjoyable experience.

As an action game: It's a RPG/w action elements, stats too low and player aim does not matter you will miss, it's controls are a little awkward. You most likely won't enjoy it.

@sippio: Alpha Protocol is a mess that is less of a game and more of a lesson in the pitfalls of software development. There's an interesting story, with tons of branching paths and choices to make, but it's hung on a game that isn't even close to finished. Imagine a third person RPG/Shooter that plays worse than Mass Effect 1, and has more bugs and rough edges than any Bethesda game.

Alpha Protocol could have been something really cool ... if it had been finished.

@sippio: Well, I don't know what kind of games you like. It's an action RPG where you can either shoot through missions or use some stealth mechanics. Its best feature is that it offers players a huge amount of choice and the true ability of changing the outcome of the story. It's old now with dated graphics, and it has clunky controls. There aren't any games like it, so it's hard to compare it to anything. But I think you're most likely to like it if you're a fan of story-heavy RPGs such as Dragon Age: Origins or Fallout: New Vegas...

I want a fallout Remaster and dream of another new Fallout..

Bethseda Fallout games SUCK..

normally I say something so lame & outta place but it's the truth about my experiences with Fallout 3 & Fallout 4 & the Fallout 76 beta

(which ive no plans of buying now)

All 3 Fallout games f/ Bethseda are slow moving and boring..Somehow Obsidian fixed this 100%..

ive played 2 full playthroughs of Vegsa & the last one was about 1000 hours as I was in OldWorldBlues for bout 300+ hours having fun doing loot-circles...

~Fallout Vegas humiliated Bethesda and we all know it...

im a neutral gamer who last gen was taken to court by old school best man from my wedding and teenage late 90's about

how " I was only hurting myself by NOT owning a PS3 and having some pretend loyalty to Xbox..Dude said the same thiung with the PS2 when I didn't buy the new Original Xbox...

So now I own em all cause im not a employee of none of them...

~I prefer PS4 sore & dashboard.

~I prefer PS4 PS+ FREE GAMES ui VS Xbox..Xbox I never know if they are gonna charge me @ website.

~I prefer PS4 controller!!!

~I prefer Xbox games vs PS4 Japanamation style.

~I prefer Xbox for dealing w/ MP in games as Xbox live simplifies sht..

~#1 & Biggest deal to me is= backwards compatible games!!!

but @ end of the day I love em both & don't waiver outside of neutrality.

I am enemy of PS4/Xbox fanboys because they have the old me mentality & it hurts gaming..

review bombing & smack talking..tools!!

Obsidian is in better hands then Activision,Take Two or EA...

Look @ Bungie complaining about Microsoft control over them & now look at them under Activision..

Imagine Destiny had Bungie stayed @ Microsoft! All games woulda won..

sorry if I offended you/anyone. not my intention & reason for apology is I try not to come across as @-hole....

This folks is the beginning strategy for the ninth generation of gaming. During the 7th gen and through the Mattrick horrendous 8th gen launch all MS did was shed valuable first party studios. Now it looks like MS is started to make a play for the 9th gen by bolstering its almost barren first party studio stable- I wonder what moves Sony will be making next- either way it is a great time to be a gaming studio.

(Don Mattrick sp) and Balmer - once made a call that the video game industry was going to be nothing but social media games like Farmville and candy crush or quickly go to mobile with the console slowly dying save for motion control games.. That is what you get when CEO follow fads and not asking what hardcore games really want. Of course none of this came to pass and 100million + 8th gen consoles later, you see why both of them are retired and kicked to the curb.

Like the start of the 5th gen, you had Sega, Nintendo, and newcomer Sony investing in new, old, and sometimes radical studios for first party games. Was that ever a console war generation. Still all this is good news for gamers.!!

@xshinobi: Better? That's laughable. New Vegas was so full of game-breaking bugs, companions getting completely lost, freezes once you got high levels. I've started 4 characters and haven't been able to finish one of them Suuuure. Better game. Quite hilarious sir.
