Xbox 360 sales top 8 million in Europe

Publisher touts console's "biggest sales period ever" for EMEA region during holiday 2008, doubling up on last year's performance.

With the global economic crisis looming over every sector, investors and industry watchers are keen on good news of any kind coming out of the all-important holiday shopping season. For its part, Microsoft has continued to put on a strong showing with its Xbox 360--in Europe, at least.

The Washington-based company announced today that its gaming console saw 100 percent year-over-year sales growth in the region during December. Although Microsoft did not elaborate on exact sales data for the month, the publisher did say that to date, the Xbox 360 has sold 8 million units in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, a figure it claims is more than 1 million greater than archrival Sony's PlayStation 3. During Microsoft's July-September reporting period, the publisher said that lifetime sales of the Xbox 360 had surpassed 23 million.

Citing sales figures provided by GfK-ChartTrack, Microsoft further claimed today that the 360 was the "fastest-growing" console in Europe during 2008. That growth was bolstered by 2008's holiday sales period, during which the Xbox brand saw its biggest gains since being introduced to the region in 2002, according to the publisher.

Microsoft has not yet updated the Xbox 360's North American sales performance. However, a company representative confirmed for GameSpot that an announcement would be "coming soon." In the past, such updates have been made during Microsoft's keynote presentations at the Consumer Electronic Show. This year, the publisher's keynote is scheduled for Wednesday, January 7.

Thanks in large part to sweeping price cuts enacted in September, the Xbox 360 easily bested the PS3 in unit sales during November, outselling Sony's console 836,000 units to 378,000, according to the NPD Group. However, both systems fell well short of Nintendo's industry-leading Wii, which sold more than 2 million units in November alone.

WoooHoooo Coopdeville69 comments are right on the button. Way to go Microsoft, I Cann't wait until Microsoft makes Sony go back to just making games. Kinda like something Sony did to Sega during the consol wars in the 90s.

I actually sold my ps3 recently. It was collecting dust and all the multi-plat games I bought for the 360. I do sorta regret it mainly because of all the good movie releases lately on blu-ray.I am trying to decide on whether I should buy another one or just go with a cheaper stand-alone blu-ray player. I purchased the ps3 for exclusives like MGS4,but after finishing that game, the ps3 lost its luster for me.After seeing the trailers for GOW3,I wish I would have refrained from getting rid of it.

I myself love what Microsoft has done for online console gaming, it's so easy to join up with other people, either to chat with friends on headsets while I'm playing my own games, or to link up online with friends, and just managing parties and adding new friends and contacting them is so simple I haven't really given it much thought but the other day my roommate and I tried playing Mario Kart (Wii) with my roommate's sister and her husband online... it was a huge pain in the ass, it's not like XBL where you register friends and that's that, you have to register your friends for each and every game, by the time we were playing online I felt that entire effort just to play was a huge waste of my time

@Coopdeville69 if you already own a movie then dont buy it again, you can buy the new movies on blu-ray smart one. i wanted a 360 but got ripped off and never got one(some guy in canada) then i got a ps3 and am soo glad i did there are so many great games out and coming out, and i couldnt get M games and thats all the xbox exclusives are rated. and i can play half the xbox exlusives on pc, so i win now that i can get M games. and they changed the controller once, and i needed an extra controller anyways. and at the time i was buying a console it was the $450 elite or the $400 ps3, i actually paid for a elite but yeah got ripped off, and even now the elite is only lowered equal to 400 40gb ps3.

People that import and have their microsoft RRoD will buy another console. People that hacks and buys pirated games will buy another consoles too. As people that lost their warranty for any other reason. And there are people that bought another for home while the other were in repair and kept both, one in each room. MJK1 has a point. I have a PS3 and was the smartest choice i have done. The exclusives, blu-ray, Free PSN and the fact that i would import (due to price where i live) .

I'm very thankful that M$ manned up and payed for the crappy hardware they keep sending out, I'm on my 4th 360 since they first started coming out. This happens pretty much on a yearly basis for me so far, and this is just from average use as I dont really have all that much time to play games and/or movies. RRoD warranties for the win!

@ Copedeville69 I'm with you on that one, I've always bought every console out there SNES, Playstation 1&2, Xbox, Dreamcast, Gamecube....The 360 has pretty much all the games I want to play and didn't leave me a good reason to also get the PS3.

Since the time of the original Playstation I was hooked and thought nothing could ever be better then Sony. Again I bought a PS2 and loved it and still have one today. As the saying goes things change. I didn't really want a X Box 360, but I just could not wait another year for PS3 to come out. As it turns out I am happy with the 360. Sure it cant play Blue Ray movies. But I already have hundreds of DVD's. Why do I want to pay $20 dollars more for the same movie I already own. All it come down to for me is the gaming experience. With so many games to choose from for 360 (and the fact Microsoft has the best online gaming experience) it is the best gaming console. Sorry PS3 your timing, high cost, and the fact you jerked people around with changing the controller too many times did you in.

Dragonrider617 only an idiot would buy another 360 after RRoD since it's fully covered by warranty (shipping included) I had 2 RRoD shipped fixed and returned in less then 10 days. The second time around they even changed the DVD player which was getting old and not working properly....again FREE OF CHARGE ;)

mjk, you obviously have not read any knews at all in the past year so I will say this to you. RRoD is covered by an extended warranty, so people are not buying new xboxes because their old ones died (if you are you must be like mjk).

This will more than likely be the story in America as well. Sony didn't have a lot of offer software wise that was any better than what MS was offering as well. So it makes sense to buy the cheaper console in tough economic times that has the same games with just as many options that the PS3 does aside from Blu-Ray. I still say that the PS3 would be doing a hell of a lot better if they didn't remove the Emotion Engine.

I think the success of the X-Box 360 has to do with price and appeal. Microsoft made sure to price the 360 competitively by keeping production costs low, while Sony priced the PS3 high because of high production costs. Also the PS3 doesn't have more appeal, because many who buy consoles already have things like DVD's, Internet, and all the other stuff the PS3 does. I think unfortunately the PS3 will end up being viewed as ultimately a unfortunate failure compared to its competition.
