Wii U, 3DS Smash Bros. still 'years' away - Report

Project Sora head Masahiro Sakurai says all his studio's resources are devoted to Kid Icarus completion.

Nintendo launched the 3DS in March, and one of the biggest criticisms leveled at the device was the absence of big-name first-party franchises available for the new device. With many of those franchises--including Mario Kart, Star Fox, Super Mario, and Kid Icarus--confirmed for release this year, the publisher said at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo that the Smash Bros. franchise is also en route for the 3DS and newly unveiled Wii U console.

Don't expect a new Smash Bros. anytime soon.
Don't expect a new Smash Bros. anytime soon.

Unfortunately, it appears as if gamers won't be seeing those new installments in the crossover 2D fighter franchise anytime soon. As part of a weekly column in Famitsu magazine (translated by 1Up), Project Sora director of software development Masahiro Sakurai confirmed that the two Smash Bros. games are still several years off.

"Right now, we're devoting all our manpower to working on Kid Icarus," Sakurai wrote. "We've got no plans whatsoever--we've got two new games out in the open when there's no extra time to work with them at all. It makes me cringe, and I'm not sure it's the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members."

Sakurai went on to note that while his studio was prepared to bring the Smash Bros. franchise to the 3DS, plans for the Wii U installment were a bit more impromptu.

"Project Sora had intended to make a 3DS Smash Bros. once it had finished up a game on the system and had gotten used to the hardware's feature set," he wrote. "With the advent of the Wii U, though, we had a choice to make. Iwata asked us if we wanted to make the next Smash Bros. on the Wii U or 3DS, and my thought was that we had to go on both platforms."

As for why the game will be arriving on both the 3DS and Wii U, Sakurai said that it was the best way to grow the franchise.

"If we went solely for the Wii U, the HD graphics would really bump up the visual effects, but then we'd be stuck in another arms race," he said. "If we made this game another extension over previous one, we'd have to cut out the new things we could possibly do on the 3DS hardware and compete with ourselves again over the size of the character roster and the amount of gameplay we can put it."

"It wouldn't be a fruitful competition, but doing something completely new would be difficult for many reasons, not least of which that the gamers may not be satisfied with it," he continued. "That's why we decided to think about ways to link the personal connection one has with his portable system to the gather-around-and-play aspect of console systems."

Nintendo currently expects to launch the Wii U sometime between April 1, 2012, and December 31, 2012. For more on the system, check out GameSpot's Nintendo Wii U: Inside and Out feature.

I like Sakurai, the guy is realistic. I am looking forward to the next Smash Bros. game on the 3DS, but I can certainly wait a few years for it. Kid Icarus could actually turn out to be pretty good too, judging by its latest E3 showing.

Get another console, play it. Nintendo takes it time to release games. So to avert being disappointed or loosing interest don't think about the games, they will come when they come.

If a new Smash Bros was coming out on the Wii U on launch - THAT would make it an immediate success - not ports of already existing games with pointless touchscreen extras.. Nintendo must not repeat what became of the Wii, speaking as a Nintendo fanatic from the 80s I am really starting to worry about the Wii U already!

They're gonna release Wii U on the day the world is supposed to end, and it'll turn out the prophecy wasn't for the end of the world, but actually just Nintendo releasing the Wii U.

Well this is a disappointment... A new Smash Bros. would sell better than Kid Icarus, as hardly any newer gamers know about the Kid Icarus games. Since the last KI game was released in 1989 or 1990 for the GameBoy!

Who cares about Kid icarus? There's a reason he didn't make it big off the back of the old games; unlike so many other Nintendo characters did all those years ago. Ironically, the majority of people only know of Kid Icarus because of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I'd say a lot of people would agree with me if asked Smash Bros. or Kid Icarus I'd answer Smash Bros. At least they're not rushing it out to meet a deadline, I'd rather it came out polished then just "finished".

First, using PS3 and 360 game videos in their presentation...Second, announcing a game that, to me, sounded like a launch title, we find hasn't begun developement...Time to change that E3 Report Card grade...

I think we all knew there would be a new SSB anyway, the announcement wasn't a big surprise. Either way, take your time, Sakurai, I want a quality title, not a rushed one.

Seems to me like they revealed this a bit too early. Now the hype train's starting off before the game(s) are even in the works. :\ I'm glad they're putting all their efforts into Kid Icarus though. Good move, Sakurai. But hey, there's no way SSB4 won't be produced in some form or another. If you want a good game, you fanboys have to be patient. :p

Whatever they do, I hope they somehow make it so you'll be able to play it with Gamecube controllers. There aren't any Gamecube ports on the Wii U console, so...Official Nintendo Gamecube to USB Adapters anyone?

I'm okay with them only adding at least five characters if it saves the connectivity with the 3DS. We already have 35 characters and I'm very interested on how they will utilize the connectivity.

It doesn't matter how long it takes to release the next Super Smash Bros. It just matters to know that they are making another Super Smash Bros. game. Besides, the longer Nintendo takes to make a game the better the game will be.

Well Satoru Iwata DID say at the Nintendo E3 press conference that the new SSB game was going to be developed after HAL was done with Kid Icarus 3D. With that being said, SSB has such a high standard of quality and content that I hope they take their time with it and make a game for the ages.

Don't like hearing news like this but the upside is that they can take their time. I love Smash Bros. and I can wait for the next one knowing it will be awesome! It really shows great teams when games get debugged and polished before launch. I really hope they do online right this time. I want to be able to have an account!

Ok everyone, please remember that the Wii U is still in development. They just revealed the controller to the developers. Kid Icarus has been in development for a couple years now. They are not going to drop a huge franchise revival at the last minute. Now Smash Bros is a big project as it is, but they've decided to add functionality to be able to play between the Wii U and 3DS. That is no small hurdle to overcome. They also have to make it a good game. it has to be an improvement on the last one. Be patient. Smash Bros has never been a launch title for any system.

@mrzero1982pt2 I see your point, but at least Nintendo still makes many remarkably memorable games for their system. Sony relies too heavily on 3rd party and the only well known game from Microsoft Studios is Halo, which many in here have said it has gotten really old, really fast. Those last words are not mine, but I agree with them nonetheless. . .

No surprise there. Iwata and Co. have an annoying habit of either doing a 'ninja' press release or releasing the info too early. Otherwise, the next Smash Bros (codenamed: Strife) better take out that annoying trip effect. If you wanna see what I think the next game should have, look up my blog. You may enjoy it. . .

They should just release 3DS game first but Iwata boned us. At least there will be some good 3rd party games the rest of the main nintendo franchises on the 3DS this year even. They should really rest their hat on the WiiU releasing it so early was a terrible idea especially with the release of 3DS this year so far it looks like they are trying to tack the WiiU to it which will be a bad implementation.

@gamebuyer22 Milking the franchise? Uncharted 3 is about to come out it just started and its already tied with Smash Brothers... There is nothing wrong with sequels if you actually improve the game in some way and don't release 1 every year 1 per console cycle is modest compared to most.

that dust you see on top of your 3ds will be thick as all sin before they come out with a quality game for that console. and by then, they will come out with a 4ds. why is it nintendo SITS on good things and expect their buyers to be loyal? its like now they make something and expect you to just sit there while they do nothing and they come out with something when the popularity for their product is GONE.
