Why Red Dead Redemption Isn't Playable on Xbox One...Yet

"We're definitely engaged with all of our publisher and developer partners--including Rockstar."

Microsoft has spoken out to explain why Red Dead Redemption, among other Xbox 360 games, are not playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility--at least not yet. As you might have guessed, it likely has something to do with licensing agreements.

"After the technological breakthrough that got backwards compatibility working, the next step was to figure out how to license all this content, originally released on Xbox 360, for Xbox One," Microsoft engineer Richard Irving told Eurogamer. "As you can imagine, publishers have cut very specific deals on some of that content. For example Madden--you can imagine how many licenses go into a game with the players, the NFL, sponsors, and so on. And there's over 1000 games at this point on Xbox 360."

Irving said it "didn't seem fair" to ask publishers to go out and obtain licenses for these games without knowing if there would be demand for them. To that end, Microsoft opened a voting portal on its Xbox Feedback website where fans (including Snoop Dogg) could demonstrate their interest. Armed with that information, Microsoft can then reach out to publishers about specific games and say, "'Please let us know if this is something you can do,'" Irving said about obtaining the required licenses.

He added that, ultimately, it's publishers who decide if they want to approve their Xbox 360 titles to be playable on Xbox One. This back-and-forth takes times, Irving stressed, which is why Microsoft was not able to deliver all of the top 50-100 most-requested games.

No Caption Provided

Pressed about Red Dead Redemption specifically, which is published by Rockstar Games, Irving said, "We're definitely engaged with all of our publisher and developer partners--including Rockstar--on when and how we can [deliver] on that fan feedback."

GameSpot has contacted Rockstar Games in an attempt to get a response from their side of the table. We'll update this post with anything we hear back.

Rockstar Games is one of the only major publisher that has no presence in the initial list of 104 backwards-compatible games. Hope is not lost, however, as Microsoft plans to deliver "hundreds" more in the future, though a specific lineup of upcoming games has not been announced.

Clearly, there is demand for Red Dead Redemption to be added to the lineup. On the Xbox Feedback site, the acclaimed 2010 western has more than 104,000 votes, sitting behind only Call of Duty: Black Ops II. That game also did not make the cut, though the original Black Ops has been confirmed to be coming later.

Some games you shouldn't expect to see in the Xbox One's backwards compatibility program are Xbox 360 Kinect titles because the Xbox 360 and Xbox One have different Kinect cameras.

What games would you like to see added to the backwards compatibility lineup in the future? Let us know in the comments below.

how many articles will be dedicated to this very issue? this must be the 5th one i have seen (so far). people are crying about a 5 year old game not being playable on their new device, as if every 360 on planet earth has been destroyed and there is no other way to play this game now lol. wow, what is the xbox community coming to... is this just something else to complain about? or does it show how unhappy people are with the current library of bc on the x1 (despite saying otherwise in the comments to spite sony fans)? grow up people. it was premature to toss out your 360 consoles. the fault is your own. also, how many people in the world will literally play through the entire game again from start to finish? maybe less than 1% of the entire x1 user base? yea, thought so. bc is not a priority for microsoft, nor should it be. it was merely a bullet point in their winter pr notes to save face when they were hurting real bad. it might help to sell a couple consoles, but it won't make a noticeable impact in the grand scheme of things.

@Xristophoros: I don't get it either. Why would people get rid of a perfectly good system in the 360 when they still have games like RDR they want to play in the future?

If some of my digital purchases are available on my X1, cool. Otherwise, whether I stick my copy of a game into my 360 or X1 isn't a big deal.

@Xristophoros: Nobody asked for backwards compatibility dumbass. Microsoft made it happen to have an advantage over the competition and it's working. Do you know how many people upgraded to the XboxOne and now have all these 360 games collecting dust? Or how about the people that haven't upgraded but now they will because of BC? Well Microsoft does know and will defiantly reap the benefits from it.

@fig56: you glossed over my main concern. if people are so happy and thankful over bc, why are they crying about the lack of a single game not being supported at present? why are people so ungrateful and resentful all the time? also, do you honestly think microsoft would have poured all the money and resources to make this happen if they were leading sony in sales? not a chance. they got off to a terrible start and had to find ways to change their image and win back some gamers. this was all strategic thinking and would never have happened if not for their poor sales numbers. again, this is but a small, kind gesture from microsoft for screwing up the launch of the x1, but don't fool yourself and think this will make a major dent in sales.

@xenomorphalien: hmm interesting. it sounds like you don't like opinions that differ from your own. i think you chose a particularly bad website if that is the case. articles are not locked to specific groups of people... let's face it, in this world, almost every comment you will ever make is subjective. i don't care if you agree or disagree with me, but people are free to discuss whatever they please so long as they don't make personal or hateful attacks on others. news is news, whether it is about microsoft, sony, nintendo or pc... although i don't support microsoft, that doesn't mean i don't find this issue worth talking about.

I wouldn't be surprised if the real reason is that Rockstar is coming out with an HD version of RDR.

This basically explains why the Wii U can't just take all the Wii VC, and give them the Wii U treatment. It's fine to keep those Wii VC in vWii because that environment is meant to act just like a Wii, which those VC were approved for. Wii U VC differs from Wii VC, so the proper licensing and permission from the devs is required.

@mjc0961: Yeah, Microsoft soars with angels of honesty. Check out this B/C advert that makes fun of Sony and that doesn't even mention that all X360 games are not available yet. It makes it look like all X360 games will work on the X1 and that is a blatant lie.

@mkeezay22: It's the job of Microsoft's engineers to ensure a BC game runs well, R* would have little to no involvement in that.

This crap is why I like to keep my older generation hardware for as long as possible. Manipulating shelf space and all of those damned wires is whip, but at least I can still play my older titles when I want. Thank Goodness now hooking up present and future consoles only amounts to plugging in 2 wires, power cord and HDMI cable. I was so Happy to see those RCA (red, yellow, white) cables go away. I know a lot of people just can't do it, and that really sucks. Fortunately, I can.

Licensing has gotten insane. Having to license for another console just to make it playable on that console which is just a further iteration of the last console is just stupid.

@blprater: Crysis games ran horribly on the old consoles. The framerate for Crysis 3 was so bad that I couldn't even play the game. I'm hoping all three Crysis games get a remastered version for the next gen consoles.

Why do people still believe Rockstar is not on board with BC, or for that matter think they have any say in the matter? They are a subsidiary of Take Two, which already has 2K Games lined up and could easily put Rockstar games there as well (once any and all licensing issues are ironed out). That being said, there should be no licensing issues involved in Red Dead Redemption since it uses no licensed material to my recollection. Now GTA is another story altogether with the soundtrack involved.

The issue is more with the publisher having a say in where the game is playable.

@88mikelll: not if you already own the games. Personally, I think its a great idea. They can bundle games in, like they did with gears and fallout. If they make them available in the store for just a few pounds or dollars, then I will buy some.
