Why Red Dead Redemption Isn't Playable on Xbox One...Yet

"We're definitely engaged with all of our publisher and developer partners--including Rockstar."

Microsoft has spoken out to explain why Red Dead Redemption, among other Xbox 360 games, are not playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility--at least not yet. As you might have guessed, it likely has something to do with licensing agreements.

"After the technological breakthrough that got backwards compatibility working, the next step was to figure out how to license all this content, originally released on Xbox 360, for Xbox One," Microsoft engineer Richard Irving told Eurogamer. "As you can imagine, publishers have cut very specific deals on some of that content. For example Madden--you can imagine how many licenses go into a game with the players, the NFL, sponsors, and so on. And there's over 1000 games at this point on Xbox 360."

Irving said it "didn't seem fair" to ask publishers to go out and obtain licenses for these games without knowing if there would be demand for them. To that end, Microsoft opened a voting portal on its Xbox Feedback website where fans (including Snoop Dogg) could demonstrate their interest. Armed with that information, Microsoft can then reach out to publishers about specific games and say, "'Please let us know if this is something you can do,'" Irving said about obtaining the required licenses.

He added that, ultimately, it's publishers who decide if they want to approve their Xbox 360 titles to be playable on Xbox One. This back-and-forth takes times, Irving stressed, which is why Microsoft was not able to deliver all of the top 50-100 most-requested games.

No Caption Provided

Pressed about Red Dead Redemption specifically, which is published by Rockstar Games, Irving said, "We're definitely engaged with all of our publisher and developer partners--including Rockstar--on when and how we can [deliver] on that fan feedback."

GameSpot has contacted Rockstar Games in an attempt to get a response from their side of the table. We'll update this post with anything we hear back.

Rockstar Games is one of the only major publisher that has no presence in the initial list of 104 backwards-compatible games. Hope is not lost, however, as Microsoft plans to deliver "hundreds" more in the future, though a specific lineup of upcoming games has not been announced.

Clearly, there is demand for Red Dead Redemption to be added to the lineup. On the Xbox Feedback site, the acclaimed 2010 western has more than 104,000 votes, sitting behind only Call of Duty: Black Ops II. That game also did not make the cut, though the original Black Ops has been confirmed to be coming later.

Some games you shouldn't expect to see in the Xbox One's backwards compatibility program are Xbox 360 Kinect titles because the Xbox 360 and Xbox One have different Kinect cameras.

What games would you like to see added to the backwards compatibility lineup in the future? Let us know in the comments below.

That's the really lame part about having non-native, off-disc backwards compatibility.

Man I miss the good old days of no bs backwards compatibility on PS2 and launch PS3 consoles.

Another possibility is Rockstar is making an HD remake of Red Dead Redemption to re-release and want to make money of those sales. If they are they would want people to buy the new version on their new consoles instead of allowing the old game to be played.

@creepshow2: heres my problem w that. Didnt need to wait for it to be handed goty to know it was great. Rockstars is developing new unnamed game. Ring. Hey gamestop can i proorder? Not yet. Ok. Ring. Hey gamestop. How about now? Yes. Be right down. Paid off in full. For gta iv that was 3 years before release. Now theyve sold gta iv or rdr to people for 20 dollars in a bargain bin that was not a true fan until goty , possibly got century Bc theyve been told at that point what i knew when i heard there is a rockstar coming. Ive given rockstar 60 and then some. Hes given rockstar twenty. I keep an awesome game. Zero dollars back. He beats and sells. 2.50 back at that point. How is it fair for me to go pay 40 more for it again when im already up that much on a nonfan to rockstar. And once again. I am one being punished. Not just myself. Myself and about 15 million other people. And it is truly rest of gaming population that needs punishment for not having good tastes/needing to be told you missed a rockstar game and it will probably win everything as usual this year. Thats who needs to shell out 40 for this one. What honestly needs to happen is to set a date after games release and say if you owned before this date, free port. Charge the bargain bin hunters again. Or you will have no preorderers left. This industry already works backwards enough w coach passengers and pirates getting the "kings debugged experience" and day one first class buyer being pooped all over. We dont need to add to that factor in any way when we already see our preorders shrinking.

I do not understand why you would need to get license approval since technically the games are still being played on the 360. All Microsoft did was make an Xbox 360 emulator that acts exactly like an Xbox 360 does all the way to the dashboard etc. Everything is identical to the 360. Personally I have always enjoyed playing my games on the system they were designed to be played on.

@creepshow2: It's because the code has to be recompiled to run on a 64 bit (as opposed to 32 bit) system so that you avoid the '32 on 64' overhead.

So even though it's not actually changing, they are manipulating the original code, which belongs to the publishers and developers in question.

@creepshow2: Not every game was released digitally on Xbox 360. I'd guess some games have licenses for a physical release that expired when the game when out of print.

@creepshow2: i was wondering that also. since the xbox one is running basically xbox 360 operating system, so its the same system.

Its like when you buy a new cpu on your pc or upgrade the OS, you can still play the same games without any problems. why the big deal with the xbox 360 games i dunno. The xbox one is emulating the 360 1:1 exactly, there should be no licensing problems since its basically an xbox 360.

microsoft should just emulate all games and counter sue anyone foolish enough to challenge them since they are doing nothing wrong.

@Yams1980: Unlike pc game, M$ has to make a new file for the Xbone to run. So in the process they poke into something in the game i imagine, so i guess they have to be licensed. You can see that it's not an easy process as it take pretty long to release BC games, as you can see not all M$'s 1st party are available at the moment.

I'd say it could bring in some money. I'm considering purchasing TCRS Vegas 1 & 2 since I missed out on them before. As well as Splintercell Blacklist, Conviction, and Ghost Recon Future Solider if / when they come. If all those games are $20 on the digital store, that's $100 right there.

Though I personally am done with Red Dead, it was a great game and I'd be happy for those that wanted it and got it.

I don't get why licensing is such an issue here. If it was a re-release it would make sense but it's not. It's the same game they already licensed everything for the only difference is that i can be played on a new system. Why does licensing even come into the equation at that point?

To be honest, I know everyone is pretty sick and tired of remasters, but I would totally back up a Red Dead Redemption remaster for PS4/Xbox One and I much rather have that then adding BC list.

As much as I like to see a PC version, I don't have a problem if it's still console exclusive.

It's not making the publishers any money so they have no incentive to do it. Publishers would rather people buy their new games than keep playing their old ones. The only ones who benefit from this are MS and the people who want it.

@droogiecylon: which brings me back to my point. Rockstar knows many people have kept their games in particular. They bc and start watching all those free unpaid downloads begin, not sales come rolling in and they know it. Thats why you can traditionally recieve much more trade in for a rockstar than an equally aged game of someone else. And us big fans w huge r* collections are officially victims of their popularity.

I still own all my original collection of Xbox and X360 and PS1, PS2, & PS3 games. And I wish I could be able to play them all on XB1 and PS4 for my convenience, because some day all my old consoles will eventually die and I won't be able to play my games anymore.

First of all, it's so stupid that a new licencing agreement is needed for what is basically the same version, only playable on a newer system. It's like every time a new Windows gets released, publishers should renew licences for every game they have on PC to be playable on the new Windows. But I'm probably already lighting some bulbs in some douchebag's brain. As for Rockstar, licencing aren't the issue, it's the laziness, the arrogance and the ignorance for their own old titles and towards their customers to even care about crap. Rockstar -- giving the middle finger to all customers.

Rockstar made so much money on a remastered GTA 5 they will probably do the same for RDD, so they WILL NOT give a license agreement.

They know darn well how popular the game is, so they don't want to just give it away for free. They want you to buy it.

Still holding out for Tales of Vesperia. I know it's pretty niche, especially on Microsoft platforms, but I pre-purchased it online for that special day.
