Why Red Dead Redemption Isn't Playable on Xbox One...Yet

"We're definitely engaged with all of our publisher and developer partners--including Rockstar."

Microsoft has spoken out to explain why Red Dead Redemption, among other Xbox 360 games, are not playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility--at least not yet. As you might have guessed, it likely has something to do with licensing agreements.

"After the technological breakthrough that got backwards compatibility working, the next step was to figure out how to license all this content, originally released on Xbox 360, for Xbox One," Microsoft engineer Richard Irving told Eurogamer. "As you can imagine, publishers have cut very specific deals on some of that content. For example Madden--you can imagine how many licenses go into a game with the players, the NFL, sponsors, and so on. And there's over 1000 games at this point on Xbox 360."

Irving said it "didn't seem fair" to ask publishers to go out and obtain licenses for these games without knowing if there would be demand for them. To that end, Microsoft opened a voting portal on its Xbox Feedback website where fans (including Snoop Dogg) could demonstrate their interest. Armed with that information, Microsoft can then reach out to publishers about specific games and say, "'Please let us know if this is something you can do,'" Irving said about obtaining the required licenses.

He added that, ultimately, it's publishers who decide if they want to approve their Xbox 360 titles to be playable on Xbox One. This back-and-forth takes times, Irving stressed, which is why Microsoft was not able to deliver all of the top 50-100 most-requested games.

No Caption Provided

Pressed about Red Dead Redemption specifically, which is published by Rockstar Games, Irving said, "We're definitely engaged with all of our publisher and developer partners--including Rockstar--on when and how we can [deliver] on that fan feedback."

GameSpot has contacted Rockstar Games in an attempt to get a response from their side of the table. We'll update this post with anything we hear back.

Rockstar Games is one of the only major publisher that has no presence in the initial list of 104 backwards-compatible games. Hope is not lost, however, as Microsoft plans to deliver "hundreds" more in the future, though a specific lineup of upcoming games has not been announced.

Clearly, there is demand for Red Dead Redemption to be added to the lineup. On the Xbox Feedback site, the acclaimed 2010 western has more than 104,000 votes, sitting behind only Call of Duty: Black Ops II. That game also did not make the cut, though the original Black Ops has been confirmed to be coming later.

Some games you shouldn't expect to see in the Xbox One's backwards compatibility program are Xbox 360 Kinect titles because the Xbox 360 and Xbox One have different Kinect cameras.

What games would you like to see added to the backwards compatibility lineup in the future? Let us know in the comments below.

The whole licensing excuse is BS, if they truly made an emulator they wouldn't need licensing to play an xbox 360 game otherwise non commercial emulators wouldn't exist. The truth is either the console is not powerful enough to emulate certain games or they're not really being emulated and some porting is involved.

@cheers: It's obvious MS is having licensing issues because backwards compatibility was done through a software patch, if Microsoft made BC a priority when designing the XBONE hardware ( like the Wii, Wii U, original PS3/ 360 etc. ) the problems they're having now wouldn't exist.

Make backward compatibility like Wii and Wii U consoles that can run Gamecube and Wii game discs. Then, deal with digital contents and licensing later. That's what should be done from the get go. Spare time and nonsense.

Remember once upon a time recently after Xbox One launched, there was an official comment from Xbox saying a similar line, "If we doing backward compatibility, we're really going backward." Saying that I believe because it would benefit gamers, not Microsoft. Just like why Skype (after acquired by Microsoft for ages) is still only available on Xbox One possibly to promote the console sell.

The way Xbox One backward compatibility does is worst than PC emulators (I'm not a PC gamer anyway, to much fuss to deal with). Nevertheless, gamers are surely appreciated the backward compatibility feature. Believe it or not, after saying all the negative things, Xbox is still my preferred choice of console.

Its not true backwards compatability. Only over 100 games for it, and you also have to download the game. Why can't I just put the disc in a play? This is something Nintendo got right with the WiiU (and Wii).

@illage2: There are hundreds more coming as they've said. The only reason the WiiU can play their older games, is because they never change their architecture, and the games are pretty much the same in terms of IP's. We never see Nintendo pulling out a Battlefield or Call of Duty, so there is no need to change for 3rd Party Devs and Publishers.

I love how people still complain about this. It's either

1.) "Oh, who cares about backwards compatibility??"

Answer: It was literally one of the most voted for subjects on the feedback website.

2.) "Oh, why aren't these games on here? Microsoft isn't even trying?"

Answer: If you've been asking this, obviously you don't know how the licensing works, and probably haven't put in any effort into finding information on the subject other than comment sections.

3.) "Xbox has no games, that's why they're banking on BC! lol" or "Microsoft are just desperate for sales"

Answer: You're a fanboy/waste of space. You're not a gamer, so don't pretend to be.

4.) "This service is worthless if not all games are BC."

Answer: We get to play MORE of our collection on one device than we did before, but yet this is somehow a negative? Give it up already.

5.) "This feature will be dead soon, no one will use it. The 360 did the same thing"

Answer: Plenty of people are using it now, and people will continue too. Microsoft is backing it way more than people act. The 360 didn't even allow you to use 360 features while playing OG XBOX games, while on Xbox One, all features are present (except for certain games you cannot record or screenshot).

6.) Whatever else people say.

Answer: Not wasting time.

@LPDisturbedHU: youre approaching everything as a defensive one console owner. Some of us own both. Meaning we bought this one later for that perk and dont fool yourself into thinking that wasnt part of plan to draw back old crowd. When you make lots of promises that dont come true all at once, people are going to get upset. Firstly they flashed pub names instead of games as i begged for a game list, so you would just hope and buy. Is it their fault im a fool? No but it was intentioned that way. Secondly they wont update their list weelkly or monthly as we begged, instead opting for monday before surprise reveal. That was intentional too in case you didnt get that. If all wouldve went smoothly, we would have had title updates and game titles instead of guessing game, but it didnt and deception began to occur. Also if we are being big babies about program xbox was nice enough to offer....why were we told assassins creed was on board, bethesda on board to get one game from them. Not even their top voted. I want to direct your attention to xbox.com. They have a list of faqs on bc page. Look at answer for: how are titles selected? Very misleading. I also think there are a group of people out there that never trade in an old system and you belong in that group meaning this matters little to you, just fire up my 360 if i want to play. Some people use their old system to offset price of new system and gamestores are telling people to trade in old bc you can play all on new in november wo telling them any of fine print. Go outside. Smash your xbox 360. Retype what you just did. I dont want to get into a big console war here, but for my tastes xbox really has very little to offer in terms of new im looking forward to playing. So all this exclusive crap that offsets these other things for you, doesnt do the same for me on xbox. Bc once your 360 is smashed or sold like mine. You will be doing same thing and wishing for approval and xbox to hurry.

@bandcelks00024: "Some of us own both", many don't. There are a lot of fanboys or people that don't understand how BC works that complain about it (as well as many other situations in the gaming industry).

They flashed a lot of games in past videos (which I'm assuming will all come eventually).

Of course the list reveal on Monday was intentional, I thought that was common sense? It built up hype and kept the fact a majority of the games in the first batch of games was full of mostly indie games. Is that misleading? I mean, not overly, maybe a little though. I feel like them being silent over what games are coming out though is meant to hype up the possibilities (but they did tell us a select number of games that many of us 'assume' are releasing in December). I personally thought it was really cool that they kept the partnership with Activision under wraps, making the reveal that Black Ops is coming to Xbox One just that more exciting.

We were never told Assassin's Creed was on board, we were told Ubisoft was. Don't blame Microsoft for something Ubisoft may have said or for things others have said (besides Assassin's Creed II is clearly on the list). Bethesda actually has 4 titles on the list (Fallout 3, DOOM, DOOM II, and Wolfenstein 3D). Also, Fallout 3 may not have been the most requested Bethesda title, but it's pretty obvious why that one was put through BC first. To add incentive of pre-ordering Fallout 4.

You shouldn't assume what kind of gamer I am. I am proud to be keeping my 360 until I am comfortable with the size of the list and that games that aren't carried over aren't games I'll regret not being able to play anymore.

And I don't plan on getting into a console war either. I love gaming, period. I don't care if you prefer Xbox, Playstation, Wii U, PC, Gameboy, Gamegear, or even Dreamcast. Gamers should be playing games because of the games, not because of brands.

And don't say I'm being a fanboy in this comment, I own both PS4 and X1. Everyone is freaking out about this backward compatibility but look at Sony. They said they are astonished at Microsoft getting it to work and that it's impossible for them to do the same. That right there shows that they are quite incompetent. Firstly, nothing is impossible, and especially not doing something akin to what someone else already did.

Red Dead Redemption Remastered, confirmed. It's very laughable that Microsoft calls backwards compatibility a "technological breakthrough", like..WOW, no one has ever done it before. Even damn Nintendo DS could run GBA games. And yes, I know it's not the same kind of BC, but it's still idiotic that a console of such high technology (supposed) can't run games from a past generation, but makes sense...otherwise they couldn't have sold idiotic collections like the Master Chief one and dozens of "remastered" games that plagued this and PS4.

Next-gen, they said...

@Kusann: It's running emulation of a completely different processor family at half the clock speed whilst running software in place of hardware, whereas most emulation runs on machines which have higher clock speed, more memory and better overall data bandwidth than the original machines ... so yeah, that's a technological breakthrough and anyone who knows what they're talking about agrees...

Then there's you...

@Kusann: It technically is a technical feat on this piece of hardware (X1). But I like where you're going with this. The benchmark for new console hardware should be that it is powerful enough to emulate the old hardware going forward with ease.

Backwards compatibility is not the same as we remember from ps1 to ps2 or n64 to gamecube to wii and the multitude of handheld systems in relation to what xbox one is implementing. They are using an emulator while previous consoles used compatible hardware. Hardware does not require any new licensing or publishing deals as games will work just fine from console to slim, etc.

I am still very impressed at the BC xbox has been able to bring at all, regardless of limited selections. I knew that many publishers like Activision, Ubisoft, Rockstar and more would be a problem or no chance at all. The PS now service has, as of mid-2015, there are more than 400 games, is able to bypass alot of the redtape by running the games on hardware servers via the cloud, also you will notice large publishers are not present as well because of licensing issues.

For most, BC is not a high demand or even a freq used feature. But having it still gives more choice to the consumers. No reason to hate - regardless of limited selection or slow implementation- at least it increases a gamers options.

BTW: http://store.steampowered.com/app/251290/ The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Story is out finally on PC and PSP so rejoice!

Rockstars formula of we dont want people selling their games back week 2 of release so lets make an awesome game that will be hard to part ways w is screwing us. I think xbox is trying to push future sales of these games as a biggie to play ball for these pubs. Rockstars data probably shows that their games are number one kept games. Therefore. They port, its essentially for free as fan service unless they remaster. Half my kept collection is old rockstar games. This doesnt change quickly, i will buy beat and trade every game i purchase no matter how good. They are all rentals now. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone w a rockstar game to email mouthoff@rockstar.com and give them a piece of your mind. Whose hurt by all this is the release day preordering fan who was a big enough fan to think they would keep it. And foolish enough to think that they owned it. This is whats ruining digital gaming right here. Why would i eat whole cost of something to only be phased out of ability to play it and not be able to obtain any trade in for it?

I finally got an xbox rep to tell me that if my game was in top of votes and not coming thursday, i can assume theres been an issue w publisher authorization. I told him well you can say blame pubs all you want, if were not told which pubs to blame, we look like a$$e$ shooting emails around when we dont even know and he told me that.

Backwards compatibility is nice and all, but the whole idea of a new console is to play new games... with so many good games this holiday season (FO4, Halo 5, Battlefront, Just Cause 3, the list goes on), who's really going to be playing last gen games on their current gen consoles?

@Daveof89: There are still plenty of games I never got to play last gen, and now with BC I can get around to many of them. For example, I just started up Just Cause 2 today just because I wanted to see what the game is like. The problem with your statement is, why would PC gamers ever go back to playing old games?

The answer really is, gamers will be playing the games they love, rather than just categorizing the situation as new vs. old games. If a game is good enough to a consumer, age shouldn't really be an issue. My girlfriend and I are going through the Gears series because she's interested. I've played each of the games at least 4 times, but it's great that I can go back and play them on the same box. Especially since I don't have my 360 up at school.

@Daveof89: I recently replayed Grandia 2 and OoT. While most people probably won't play older games, it's still a great thing to have as an option, and it frees up one slot under the TV. It's a free feature that will not cost us anything. So, if the console makers and publisher want to break their backs to bring it to us?

I say fine. Anything to make them remember who is the customer is a good thing.

I only wished this wasn't the same kind of inferior Software BC that they did on X360... Nothing beats hardware compatibility. But that does not make us pay for those old games in digital form ^^;.

Bethesda and take 2 were partners in program and we got one game. Same w assassins creed. We will get others as preorder bonuses for whatever their new games are me thinks. These all shouldve been ready or not announced as partners.

@bandcelks00024: Top one? Black Ops II is the most requested, not the original. Black Ops is what's coming soon. You should really research what you're preaching, because stating that publishers are putting only one game in the program is a lie (at least when you're talking about 2K, Ubisoft, and Bethesda).

@LPDisturbedHU: They're practically the same game.
