Westworld Season 2 Will "F**k With The Metaphysical," Producer Says

Westworld was one of the most intriguing new shows of 2016. Based on the Michael Crichton movie, the HBO series blends sci-fi and Western elements in a very intriguing way. Little is known about the much-anticipated Season 2, but now some high-level details about what to expect have come to light.

Executive producer Roberto Patino said at the PaleyFest event this weekend that the story will mess with your mind, involving the metaphysical.

"There will be a story, and it will f**k with the metaphysical at some point," he said, as reported by IGN.

Season 1 contained a lot of memorable mindbending scenes and sequences, so it's no big surprise that this will continue in Season 2.

At the end of Season 1, it was suggested that Westworld was just one of the places that guests could visit, with another being Samurai World. Asked if there are indeed other worlds in the show's universe, showrunner Jonathan Nolan said with a chuckle, "That would be cool, wouldn't it?"

Also during the PaleyFest panel, Nolan confirmed that the character Maeve (Thandie Newton) was acting on her own free will when she decided to abandon her escape plans to instead stay in Westworld to find her daughter. Some believed that this was all part of her programming, but apparently it's not.

"If you look at her performance in that moment, that is really the first decision she's ever made. For me, it's a very emotional moment in the episode because you see her freewill," Nolan said.

Finally, during the panel Nolan said filming on Season 2 will not begin until the scripts for all the episodes are done. For Season 1, this was not the case, which could be the reason why the show was delayed.

"It was a real lesson for us in the first season," Nolan said about writing scripts before shooting. "When they say it's not TV, it's HBO, they're not kidding. It's a 10-hour movie we're making here. We're writing right now. We're terribly excited about what we're writing."

Westworld was HBO's most-watched series ever for its first season, surpassing Game of Thrones. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere this year or next.
