Venom 2 Director Andy Serkis Reveals Tom Hardy Helped Write Sequel Movie

Andy Serkis already knows, visually, what he wants to do with Venom 2.

While Andy Serkis was only just named director of the upcoming sequel to the Venom movie, lots of work is being done on the project already. Serkis appeared at the TCA press tour to discuss his upcoming turn as the Ghost of Christmas Past in FX's A Christmas Carol, and also took the time to speak briefly about the film.

"I'm right in the beginning stages, so I've got some very clear ideas about the journey, [and what] I'd like to see visually, and how we can take the characters into another direction," he explained.

However, Serkis also revealed that Tom Hardy, who stars as the titular Venom, is hard at work on the film's story. "Tom was very involved with the writing--with [screenwriter] Kelly Marcel--of the new story," he said. "So it's very much centered around their take."

For now, though, Serkis is simply looking forward to what's to come. "I'm excited to work with all the great actors who are involved. It's a fantastic franchise," he said. "I'm really honored to have been asked to direct it. And it feels like it's a very, again, very contemporary story. And it's I think it's going to be, hopefully, a story piece of cinema."

Still, even with a massive project like Venom on the horizon, Serkis has no plans to stop acting altogether to focus on directing. "I love doing both. I absolutely love doing both," he admitted. "And man, it's a wonderful thing to be able to go from the intimacy of playing a single character and seeing the world through that character's point of view to stepping back and envisioning and being part of creating, you know, the whole picture."

A release date for Venom 2 has not been officially announced.

Is this a good thing? Is Hardy in any way a good screenwriter?

Just don't forget that Venom only exists because of Spider-Man, and there would be nothing cooler than a brawl between all three, leading up to a climactic 2v1.

@JackNief: Well the first movie was not allowed to even mention the existance of spider man, or anything MCU> the sequel ... just dont know, with MCU still owning anything spiderman right now... Can Sony at least get a mention of him?, let alone a fight scene ?? that is a magic eight ball ? at best. .

OH, man this is shaping up to be worse then the first Venom. Tom Hardy's acting could not hide the painful and cheesy lines, incoherent script, devoid of a complete 3rd act, and claustrophobic special effects on par with Fantastic Four's warehouse green-screen. Venom was a very shallow comic book character and Carnage even less so, what they need to make a decent sequel I cannot imagine.

If they tone the special effects down and pull in a very counter strong charismatic villain like say Kraven and base the story on Kraven's Last Hunt and really good story where Kraven defeats spiderman, burys him, dons his outfit and brutally fights criminal in spiderman's place just to prove he could. Replace Vermin with Venom, would offer a strong chance at a decent story. This of course if sony can even use Kraven, since they cannot mention spiderman, which Venom entire being is based off of spiderman.

Harding and Serkis are pretty talented, but if the sequel is as bad as the first one.... I would rather see more into the spider-verse.

@jenovaschilld: I'm curious, why do you think this is shaping up to be worse already? Hardy's charisma and improv were the best things about Venom, so I'm glad he's helping with the writing. And Serkis has a lot of experience with motion capture and dual personalities. Of course it could be bad as more details spill, but there's really no reason to think that it's going to be "worse" with the information that is currently out there.

@ryanpm40: Well a few reasons. Serkis' two directorial movies Breathe and Mowgli were lukewarm at best and no praise for his directing, not that either were a real chance for a director to shine. Harding, a fine actor, has no history of writing either. Possible 10/20 release date says they do no plan to put it up against any heavy spring, summer or christmas blockbusters. They will probably keep the same budget also.

There is a couple of things that might - suggest it could be good though. Harrelson is for sure gonna be Carnage, and they have a different screenwriter, but same shitty editor.

So right now I would put this up with a Sony amazing Spiderman 2012 movie or Fantastic Four 2013 - shitty movies (like Venom) that it is a crap-shoot as to what to do with them. is Venom a one trick pony? do we spend more on venom 2? do we make some radical changes? Even the actors, directors, screenwriters from the first film said for the longest time to the ?, were they planning to do a venom sequel? 100mill budget - 800mill worldwide, and they would just shrug their shoulders. Compare Sony spiderman/spiderverse 90mill b- 370mill ww and Sony quickly confirmed a sequel, spin off, tv series., because of the huge critical praise.

Can Kelly write a decent superhero movie..... ?? maybe ?? The writer of the garbage Fifty shades of grey screenplays and decent saving mr banks are not in the field of the superhero genre which arguably requires a bit of fandom in the script. And the TV series Terra Nova crashed pretty fast also and was boring.

Maybe time will say... .. I mean why do you think the Venom 2 will be any better then the first one?

You can bet in Venom 2, there's gonna be lots of Carnage! Really enjoy the first Venom, I trust Hardy on this one.
