Trine crosses 1.1 million sold

Frozenbyte reveals sales total for physics-driven fantasy action game as Trine 2 hits PC; Xbox 360 and PS3 editions of sequel arrive later this month.

Trine put Finnish indie Frozenbyte on the map. To mark today's launch of Trine 2, the developer revealed just how well its original fantasy action game sold.

Trine 2 is officially the follow-up to a million-seller.
Trine 2 is officially the follow-up to a million-seller.

According to Frozenbyte, Trine has sold more than 1.1 million copies to date across all platforms, with a bulk of the sales coming from Steam and the Humble Bundle. OnLive was also cited as a "notable part" in the continued sales of the game. Trine launched in mid-2009 for PCs and then expanded to the PlayStation 3, Mac, and OnLive.

Trine puts players in the roles of a thief, knight, and wizard tasked with traversing a series of physics-heavy platforming levels. Each class has different innate abilities, and the characters must be used in conjunction to successfully conquer each side-scrolling area.

Trine 2 launched today for $15 as a PC/Mac SteamPlay title and is set to arrive on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade on December 20 and 21, respectively. A Mac App Store version is slated to launch later this week, and the game is also available directly via Frozenbyte's website.

@Soothsayer42 Understood. My main point is that when PC gets love (which is rare these days) before the damn consoles all these fanboys throw a tantrum and it gets old.

Glad to hear that. Love it when indie companies make a successful product. May every victory today lead to success in the future.

@MJ12-Conspiracy But Trine had co-op. :| On a side note. 2 weeks? D: Well, I guess they give me time to wrap up school, but still, I've been waiting since spring for that game. Lucky PC gamers. :P

im glad they put co-op mode on the sequel. Loved the first one but kinda suck playing solo when you have 3 characters to choose with.

I picked it up during Steam's summer camp. I had a desire to try new types of games, so I was buying games from different genres and indie developers left and right. Not really my cup of tea though, I've never really been into platformers and this one didn't really sell me on the genre either.

I tried the demo for Trine but couldn't really get into it. All of the switching back and forth I'd forget what the characters did so I'd overthink everything, Trine would have been better with coop but hey, any indie game that sells 1 million or more is obviously doing something right.....

It amazes me when a game as visually appealing as Trine creeps across the million sales mark, while a game like Angry Birds is downloaded 1-billion times.

@PeterDuck Believe it or not, Steam brings in a lot of sales. So having it released on PC first is a smart move. Live....who gives a #@$%.

Trine was an excellent platformer. I've been waiting for a while for this one. Just glad it didn't get delayed into next year. In any case, if you haven't played the first one then you're missing out!
