These Are Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13's PC Graphics Options

The game comes to Steam on December 10.

[UPDATE] Square Enix has now passed along some images that highlight Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII's PC graphics options. Click through the images in the gallery below to see them all.

The original story is below.

When Square Enix announced Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII's PC release date last month, the company confirmed the role-playing game would have "graphics options," but didn't say what these would be.

No Caption Provided

Now, the company has provided a list of these options, which are intended for "high-end" PCs. Take a look at the list below, which Square Enix sent to GameSpot and is also featured on the game's Steam page.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII PC Graphics Options:

  • Rendering resolution
  • Scaling of the display area
  • Shadow processing
  • Texture filters
  • Color correction
  • Depth of field
  • Lighting
  • Glare

The PC version of Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII also supports full-screen and windowed display modes, as well as maximum resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p) and a top frame rate of 60 FPS. You can see the game's minimum and recommended PC requirements here.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII comes to PC through Steam on December 10. That's later than expected, as it was originally supposed to be out by spring 2015. There are no changes to the story from the console version, which was originally released in North America for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2014. The PC package also comes with (almost) of the DLC release on console.

When Lightning Returns launches on PC next month, the complete Final Fantasy XIII trilogy will be available for computers. Final Fantasy XIII was released for PC in October 2014, while XII-2 arrived in December of that year. For more on Lightning Returns, check out GameSpot's review of the console version.

I just looked at the recommended specs and had a mighty kek:

  • Windows® Vista/ 7/ 8
  • Intel® Coreâ„¢ 2 Quad (2.66 GHz)/ AMD Phenomâ„¢ II X4 (2.8 GHz) processor
  • 2GB
  • 22GB
  • NVIDIA® Geforce® GTXâ„¢ 460/ ATI Radeonâ„¢ HD 5770
  • Sound card compatible with DirectX® 9.0c

Bullshit. FF13 runs like absolute shit at 1080p on a system WAY more powerful than this, as does 13-2. 2gb what? Ram? LOL.

A 6 year old GPU? Really? The requirements for FFXIII said 5850, so you're telling me LR needs a worse graphics card? And this is all aside from the fact that everyone knows the game needs a 980ti to get a solid 60 fps - if it even can.

@deviltaz35: I may buy it right now. Am looking at it in my cart. $14.40 on GMG. Sigh, I bought it. I don't even care though I'll wait a while to install it. Haven't even played through 13 all the way on PC and frankly I still have like 900 hours of archlyte steppes levelling in front of me before I even think of finishing the game for the 3rd or 4th time.

@ughz: It's a good buy hey? I will take ages to get up to it too. I bought the whole collection for $40 US from Greenman gaming. Figured it is going to keep me busy for a long time.

lol i know those specs are just insanity. a 460 year right lol. It is probably the latest card the Japanese think has been released on PC maybe?

@deviltaz35: Dafuq even is a gtx460, that's like 8 years ago. Idk I didn't upgrade cards for a long time. I had sli watercooled GF 6800s (Good lord they seem so old now, 9 years ago) and then they broke and the next card I remember after that was a 5750hd.

Lol, SLI 6800s. 256mb each, lord how ancient. 256mb GDDR3 for about 120 dollars. Lol, now you can get a 750ti if you're lucky for the same price.

Which picture is console and which is from the PC? The only difference looks like lighting which look really shitty in one of the shots.

@kyleliddell21: I think the second pictures in each series are from PC. The one where she has the black thing on looking at her hand looks significantly better on the second pic. Honestly don't know though and have no intention of installing it any time soon to find out.

What an amazingly innovative list of options! Man, how to those PC dudes keep pushing the envelope?!

Totally worth writing an article about options that have been in every PC game for the last 20 years.

@DeviantCode: Way to utterly miss the point, bruh.

FF13 was an epic failure in terms of a PC port. Squeenix put no graphics options whatsoever in it - it was locked to 720p and you couldn't change basically anything. They remedied it with a 1080p option, that was it. FF13-2 came out and had barely any more graphics options than FF13, basically you still were locked to a shitty approximation of the console version.

The point of this article is to tell PC gamers whether or not Squeenix put any effort into the last port, especially considering it was delayed 9 months.

Answer: No, they did not. But it has more graphics options than the last two.

@ughz: Did you know they updated FF XIII so you can run it in whatever resolution you like now?

I run in 4k DSR and it looks quite beautiful still has same framerate issues as before but no worse at 4k than 1440p.

@deviltaz35: I said that like 5 separate times throughout my spiels. That's all they changed. You could already do that anyway with DSR or SweetFX/Reshade DSR.

Seems they removed some of the vibrance from the pc version as it's less colorful, guess have to use Sweetfx/Reshader with it.

damn right. But after 1998 many games were going 3d which let you change resolutions, most before that didn't. Only one i can think currently is Ultima Online, which came out in 1997. And some dos games let you also, but fairly limited in choosing options like vga, super vga etc, not actual pixel display size. mostly all max of 640x480

you know how the last 2 ports have turned out. they should just stop releasing it on the PC, if they can't do a proper port.
Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 are just broken on PC. they've never bothered to fix it in the first place. and now they are releasing the third one year later, and expect people to forget about it. yeah....no. its just a slap in the face for PC users. if you're going to release a PC port, do it right first time. even after one Patch XIII is still not par with the Ps3 version. yeah maybe it has highe resolution, but that's where it ends. the frame rate is all over the place. XIII-2 is even worse, 30 fps cap and drops to low 20's with any modern system.

better stick to consoles only. because you keep insulting PC players with bad ports...

@DeadPhoenix86: It's extremely depressing. You'll be in an area looking at a wall and your FPS is like 100, then the second you change angle it drops to like 20. They did such a fucktastically bad job of porting, it literally runs worse than on 360. Meanwhile the same machine can play Witcher 3 on ultra without problems. The frame rate varies so wildly in one area alone, like the Palamecia exterior just before the first Barthelahellahandus fight, that it's fucking ridiculous. I stopped playing the game. I've beaten it twice on 360 and I couldn't even make it through one playthrough on PC because it's so god awful. I stopped somewhere after you get to the Ark, just couldn't deal with the performance anymore.

Square Enix refuses to learn and I'm over it at this point. Lightning Returns will be the last game I ever buy from them until JC3 is on sale for $2.50. I especially don't want the FF7 remake - and I will only accept it as a gift.

@maitkarro: it does look better ye. but the frame rate is really unstable. the only way to fix it is, is to cap the fps at 30. which beats the purpose of having a PC...

@DeadPhoenix86: Nah, a bad port is still better than nothing. The more copies of the PC version they sell the more seriously they will take the ports. Because when everyone complains and sales drop they will be hurting and will have to care then.

@Tangsta03: Except that if people continue to buy these ports at these ridiculous prices, Squeenix will continue to just release games for absurd prices that don't even work. FF1 - 6 on PC are each 20 dollars. Are you fucking kidding? Those are worse than the iOS/Droid prices, even.

@ughz: That's why you don't buy until it reaches a bargain price. :)

What's important here is the sales numbers. If we can show Square that PC is a viable market, they have no choice but to care. They only focus on consoles because it has the numbers.

@Tangsta03: IT literally doesn't reach a bargain price. FF3 has been out on PC for 1.5 years, it's still 15.99. Meanwhile I just bought Lightning Cosplays for 14.40, normally 17. And console doesn't have the numbers, that's the thing.

@Tangsta03: disagree. bad ports usually sell bad. there's no excuse for this laziness...
even a top of the class 980 can't keep a stable frame rate. so imagine how cheaper systems will run this game.
if its a good port, it will sell more. that's how it works on the PC community.

@Master_cheat001: Nothing wrong with Arkham Knight if you have a decent GPU. Problem is what they tell you you need is just a load of rubbish. Minimum should be 970 recommended 980ti. Running it maxed out in 1440p . Flying around is usually 90 fps so it's definately a huge improvement over launch.

It's a bit daft that resolution has been arbitrarily limited, rather than arbitrarily supported. How hard is it to query the OS for a list of available resoluitions and scale accordingly? Heck, Square-Enix did that themselves with FFX-2. And yet they are supporting 60fps (cool) when that is arguably the harder thing to get working properly than arbitrary resolution support? How bizarre.

Fortunately getting these games to work at higher resolutions often only requires minor tweaks.

Publishers need to realise the reason people are happy to pay for PC games over console ones (even though they don't get a physical product) is because they are getting a forward-compatable version that should scale with their hardware. i.e. the game gets better over time, not worse (so it makes sense as a long-term investment).

@Dark_Mits: ....

The article is entirely about FPS and resolution. It is the sole reason they made this article. FF13 was locked to 720p and the only way to get around it was to use GeDoSaTo for months until they released a crappy patch. FF13-2 also had crap graphics options that made it look worse than the PS3 version, and it was capped at 30 fps. So it's 100% relevant.

@Articuno76: Except "PC features" is not just that. It's also: key mapping and freedom, as well as way to customise joystick input with variable strengths, ability to have more save slots than on your typical console and ability to transfer them like actual files between different accounts instead of having them permalocked on the steam account, ability to play offline, ability to save at any point or just at save points, ability to quicksave/quickload, ability to apply mods and others I can't think of now.

PC is not just 4K and 120fps.

If you can see past the gibberish story and utterly appalling graphics (seriously, the FF13 series gets worse graphically as the games go on. 13 is STUNNING compared to its sequels), then there's actually a very fun battle system in this game. :)

Worst final fantasy ever made, the ps3 version looked terrible other than lighting and some other main character models it looked like a ps2 game and played like a pile of trash. Don't even know why it's worth mentioning.

p.s. Dear Square; windowed mode, 1080p and 60fps are not 'high-end' PC options.
