As part of the Triple-i Initiative showcase on Wednesday, Ubisoft confirmed rumors and announced the next Prince of Persia game. The Rogue Prince of Persia, as it's called, is a 2D action-platformer that's in development at Dead Cells studio Evil Empire.

A stylish cinematic announcement trailer was released during the showcase, leading into a gameplay segment near the end that shows how the game will actually play. As you'll see in the gamelay trailer, The Rogue Prince of Persia seems to borrow some of the sensibilities from Dead Cells, and it looks pretty impressive. Take a look for yourself in the video below.

The Rogue Prince of Persia takes place in a fictional version Ctsesiphon, which is the capital of the Persia empire. "The city faces invasion by the Hun's army of possessed soldiers, led by the malevolent Hun chief, Nogai. Players will embody the Prince, who was gifted with a mystical bola that resurrects him each time he dies," reads a line from the show's description. "This magical artifact has let him take huge risks to perfect the skills of acrobatics & combat in his youth, molding him into a formidable warrior. In attempt after attempt, players must help the Prince explore different biomes, master new weapons, equip new trinkets, upgrade his gears at the Oasis and rally his allies to save the city from destruction."

The Rogue Prince of Persia features wall-running elements that players will utilize to navigate through procedurally generated levels inspired by Persian architecture.

Some of the weapons players can use include twin daggers, spears, broad swords, and axes. Shields, bows, and grappling hooks are part of the secondary weapon options.

The Rogue Prince of Persia's soundtrack was produced and composed by Persian-American electronic producer and artist ASADI.

This is not the first time that Evil Empire has worked on another company's franchise, as the studio released Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania in 2023. That DLC brought Castlevania-themed characters, items, and locations into Dead Cells itself.

The Rogue Prince of Persia comes to Steam Early Access on May 14, so fans don't have to wait very long at all to check it out for themselves. This comes not long after the release of the critically acclaimed metroidvania Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown back in January. Meanwhile, the upcoming Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is reportedly undergoing another overhaul.
