The PS5 Is A Big Console For A Good Reason

According to some recent details, the size is due to an increased need for cooling, among possible other reasons.

When it was revealed last month, many people were surprised by the striking design of the PS5, which abandons the black box design of recent console generations for bold curves and a striking black-and-white color scheme. While it didn't take long for players to start making memes about the appearance of the console, others have noted its increased size over its predecessors, the PS4 and even the original "fat" PS3. That giant size is, according to one Sony employee, because the console generates an enormous amount of heat. With that much power comes a need to keep the system cool, and a huge case was necessary.

When one commenter asked on LinkedIn why the console is so bulky--as spotted by VG247--PlayStation's vice president of UX design Matt MacLaurin replied: "Thermals. This gen is little supercomputers. While the 7nm process delivers amazing heat performance for the power, the power is very extreme."

Now Playing: First Look at PS5 Console | Sony PS5 Reveal Event

However, there might be other reasons for the large size. A leaked patent seems to suggest that Sony is building a cartridge that might work with the PS5. Some observers have speculated that it's an external solid-state drive that will slot into the console for memory management, but there's no official word if that's the case. We still don't know how much the PS5 will cost, or the PS5's full line-up of games, but odds are likely that more details will come out over the coming weeks. Most of its announced first-party games are also not going to be ready for launch. However, it should receive plenty of third-party support out of the gate. This includes sports games like Madden and NBA 2K, and presumably the Call of Duty series. Some of these will be cross-generational releases, and certain publishers are also allowing players to upgrade for free when the newer version becomes available.

The Xbox Series X is also a huge console, but it sports a PC-like form factor that is more familiar to players. The console, like the PS5, can be placed horizontally or vertically. It doesn't look like it will require a stand to do so, however.

Why are "xbox people" so fixated on the tflop advantage? You guys do realize that come Nov/Dec you guys will be paying top dollar to keep on playing Xbox One games right?

Matt Booty stated that there would be no next gen exclusives for at least a year after initial release.

Don't know about you but this decision sh*** on any tech improvement you could put forward.

New console SHOULD equal new games, yet it doesn't for Microsoft

Have fun playing Xbox one remasters for the time being

Its beyond me why there hasn't been more backlash....

@kutraz: you know who else overestimated tflops too? the PS3, the console that took 3 years to pick up steam because the cell processor didn't matter in the end, hell, it even got downgraded and could still play great post 2010 games.

@kutraz: Because it's the first time they have any conceivable advantage worth hyping. Or they're shills. That's a very real possibility, too. We actually caught a few last gen change.

@kutraz: because “Sony people” raved on about nothing else 7 years ago when it was announced the PS4 would be 0.5 tflops faster than the Xbox One. Now the boot is on the other foot you’re all saying it’s not a big deal.

I’m sticking with my PS4 and One X for now as I agree there are no gaming incentives to upgrade just yet but let’s not forget you fanboys are a bad as each other. It’s pointless. You do realise you can buy both consoles right? It’s not illegal...

@Jimminyfixit: It's not really about the Playstation vs Xbox. It's that this gen has proven that optimization beats horsepower hands down. And the more graphically intense, the more likely the game will be an unplayably buggy mess. "Power" just doesn't have the allure that it did 7 years ago. Nowadays I just want a game that works from day 1, not 3 years later after numerous patches. Tflops in no way addresses that problem.

@Shantmaster_K: Go ahead man, download a game from the 90's and crank up the settings to max. Let me know if it takes advantage of your RTX 2080 ti.

It won't because the game is capped fundamentally. At the very core, it is still a 90's game. This could change if you make a remake of it, but at this point you are creating a whole new game. That would not be business smart for Microsoft. You'll just get a powdered up version of the X box one titles.

That is why any cross gen titles you compare, look marginally different, unless you make side by side comparisons but that goes against the whole idea of upgrading to next gen...

@Shantmaster_K: I am excited to hear out your logic, explain it as if I am totally naive to "computers", but also include how it is relevant to non-upgradable hardware and enhanced cross-gen titles.

While you are at it, give an example of this phenomena for the current-gen consoles

@kutraz: Well, I was going to give you a free RTX2080 TI card so you can enjoy all your games with ray tracing & max settings, but since you are not interested in playing any of your games then foggetaboutit!

The new games Horizon, Gran Turismo 7, and Ratchet & Clank are not available until 2022, you know that right? Have fun playing only 100 of the top PS4 games only on your PS5 and then paying $80 for all your new games, including the same game remasters that they will charge you for!

These are the only new games from the reveal available for PS5 holiday 2020:

  • Astro's Playroom
  • Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Godfall
  • Jett: The Far Shore
  • Oddworld: Soulstorm - TBA 2020
  • Bugsnax

@just1mohr: You guys are missing the point, whether the PS5 titles that come out this holiday are all gems is aside from the fact that Xbox has nothing for at least a year, yet some of you will still dish out the hefty sum of money. Why the Xbox community is alright with this, blows my mind.

Based on what Matt Booty said, you guys won't see anything worth what you paid for until next Christmas season, that being a best-case scenario.

And please don't try to argue that this gen will be able to cater to both new and old consoles. The same was said about last-gen, yet far cry, assassin creed, watchdogs were titles released on both and the difference was hardly noticeable unless you had side by side comparisons.

But this is to be expected, no developer is going to create separate versions of the same game from the ground up. So you cater to the bigger market and enhance it for the newer model (smaller market)

Yes, the x box series X is more powerful than the ps5 but it goes out the window if you don't have exclusives, while at the same time releasing remasters (enhanced versions) as an efficient compromise

Lastly, aside from Ryse and Sunset Overdrive (which are close to a decade old), Xbox has depended on the same old gears and halo combo. They had an opportunity to offer something fresh this gen but they shot that idea down very quickly.

Again, why the Xbox community has agreed to this sh**** deal is hard to wrap my head around.

I invite you guys to name any cross-gen titles from this gen that were night and day different...

Also, if you guys want to start picking apart AAA exclusives from Sony, I am happy to do so but I am positive that Xbox has a much much shorter list to choose from

You are buying a NEW gaming console.....WHERE ARE THE GAMES THAT MATCH THE UPGRADE???

I’d argue WatchDogs, DA: Inquisition, and Shadow of Mordor where night and day cross gen titles and nothing shown at the ps5 reveal (apart from R&C for obvious reasons) couldn’t be done on a PS4 with some downgrading.

@Keivz_basic: Your critique on whether the exclusives are top-notch is a different story. Xbox has no exclusives to critique.

BTW, based on your logic, if the Sony exclusives (built from the ground up) are not next-gen impressive, what can you expect from a cross-gen enhanced title???

@kutraz: you must not have been around during the PS4/X1 launch. PS had nothing the first 2-3 years. You mentioned Ryse, Sunset Overdrive... Halo, Gears, Forza, Ori 1/2, Quantum Break, Sea of Thieves, Titanfall, State of Decay 2. Definitley not the calibur of Spider Man, GoW, Last of Us, and Horizon, but with the new studios Xbox has a bright future, that includes Hellblade and The Outer Worlds.

You know you can play the same game on a $3000 PC and $500 PC right? Difference graphical/performance settings depending on the hardware. Same concept for the consoles or is your fanboyism blocking that simple logic?

@kutraz: we’re starting to see PS games come to PC too so that argument doesn’t hold much credit anymore. Horizon is a big one. Most of the games that were showcased at the PS5 reveal weren’t exclusives, or they were at least time-exclusives. That’s like me raving about Cyberpunk being on Xbox since it was showcased at the MS press conference.

@kutraz: lol compared to Sony players playing what, a bunch of indie games or muti-plat games that Xbox players can play too right.... your big Sony games won't be launching with the system..Gran Turismo estimated release 2022...R&C no release date(means probably not this year)...Demon's Soul(another remake with no release date aka not this year)....Horizon Forbidden West no release date....lol so what are you guys all excited about? I forgot Sony fanboys were drooling over their lackluster event, a bunch of indie games and big titles that are far off, its like when you see a movie trailer promoting a movie two years from now, like why the hell would I care about that. You will have at least Spider-Man, geez really missing out on Xbox....How about we wait until next month for the Xbox first party titles....

Also Everwild imagine that will be out in the next year, as well as Scorn. I'm sure both will be popular. I myself will be getting Halo, despite not playing the last few, also will be playing Everwild(try out first on gamepass) and most likely Scorn(I usually don't play games like that).

@bababooey12: Of course sooner(minimum of 1 year) or later Xbox will get next gen exclusives but the issue is that Microsoft is asking the community to pay up and upgrade while holding back the console for at least one year. When I ask for you to give me a title to critique I was referring to launch titles. I am certain by the time next year Christmas comes, Sony will also have other exclusives to offer, yet Xbox will barely start seeing what they paid for.

These are not speculations, Matt Booty already made it clear that Microsoft hopes for this plan to make sense. I used the word hope because it it was certain, Sony would be doing this too. But based on how current gen performed, Xbox should have listened instead of assuming again.

Again, Xbox is trying to sell you on feature instead of games. Same mistake as last gen and their “kinetic” or whatever it was called

After next month we can continue this conversation, you know when they have their 1st party event, which you seem to just keep ignoring. I know I've mentioned it a few times now.

@bababooey12: Halo infinite is NOT next gen exclusive. It sounds like you are rooting for Microsoft yet you don’t know their business model. What would be a surprise for next month’s event, would be Microsoft changing their mind and releasing games worth the upgrade. Also, your opinion about Sony’s next gen exclusive launch titles like Spider-Man and Godfall should not cloud your vision. As of today and based on what the head of Microsoft games studios has stated, Xbox people will be playing enhanced versions for at least the following 12 months after launch. That being a best case scenario

@kutraz: Well aware of their business model, been with them since 360 era, also never said Halo was only going to be on Series X, however I also know the there will be a Halo Infinite Series X version just like an Xbox One version, meaning you should still be able to tell a difference graphic as well as play wise. I forgot about Godfall, at any rate two single player driven console exclusives wow...head of Microsoft is doing that, so people who are on Xbox One don't have to feel left out and forced to upgrade just to play their games, see nothing wrong with that. I'm sure it will be better than just an enhanced version, only time will tell.

@kutraz: No big PS5 exclusive has a release date of 2020 if i am not mistaken. Spiderman:Morales is an standalone expansion which should have been released for the last Insomniac Spiderman.
Sony execs suggested the gameplay size of the last Uncharted expansion(5-6hours?)

I didnt saw even a "early 2021" date.

To me it sounds like every AAA title from Sony is late 2021 or even 2022.

Why is that?

Sony even demands from all devs/publishers that all PS4 games with a release date of August and beyond, have to be playable on the PS5 aswell.

@sladakrobot: Well you are uninformed, insomniac (the studio behind the game) has stated that it is not an expansion, referring to it as a standalone PS5 title. Whether that translates to "5-6" hours is highly unlikely, based on the expectations for the game. Also Godfall is another exclusive title that is set for this holiday season. So your claim that every AAA sony title is for late 2021/2022 is already false.

@kutraz: If you check my post above,i wrote "standalone expansion" and it was exactly like that named in few interviews after the show from a sony exec and later from a Insomniac dev.

Godfall is on PC too,so no exclusive and its not a Sony game.
Since its also apc game, the devs have to make sure the game runs of mechanical storages(HDD) on potato PCs,we shouldnt expect anything of high quality from that game.
I am not hating the PS5,just saying that Godfall is not a game to brag about.
Rachet&Clank on other hand, that was a really good showcase.

"Part of the confusion stems from comments from Simon Rutter, EVP head of European business at Sony Interactive Entertainment, who commented in an interview with The Telegraph, “I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game.” Rutter went on to explain, “There’s a substantial Miles Morales component — which is the expansion element — but also within the game as well there’s been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PlayStation 5 technology and features.”

"Spider-Man: Miles Morales will reportedly be smaller in scope than the original, though, per a Bloomberg report that compared it to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in scope."

@sladakrobot: Insomniac clarified that it was not an expansion. Tweeted about this and clarified that it was was its own thing completely. The article you are quoting was the initial thought about the game, the is more recent info on this

Second, Godfall is an exclusive to Sony when comparing it to Xbox

But if somehow PC gamers being able to play Sony exclusives makes you better about Xbox console gamers not being having any exclusives for launch, go for it...

@kutraz: Its a standalone expansion to the latest Spiderman.

You just dont need the original game to be able to play it.

My prediction is that it will not be a full priced game but around 35-40$.

I didnt brought up Xbox in my comments so i dont know why you bring it up.

You should try less to make a console war out of this.

You stated Godfall its exclusive to PS5 while it isnt.
Saying that PC gamers will be able to play a PS5 exclusive is very strange as its a day 1 game on both plattforms.

Dont get too deep into Xbox vs PS coz i am sure gamers will have many great games on each plattform to play.

@sladakrobot: I agree with your last statement about console wars, just noticed a trend of shade thrown at Sony for lack of better system specs while Xbox is under delivering when it comes to games, especially for launch

In regards to Spider man, whether its an expansion or how long it will take to beat is not relevant info. Its an exclusive next gen title

I honestly don't know why PC gaming was thrown into the equation, its a pretty niche market. Always scavenging for games

Lastly, Godfall is a Sony exclusive, meaning that Xbox users will not be able to play it on the Xbox series X. It will be eventually released to PC gaming after a year or so, but will not be playable on Xbox. This is not really hard to comprehend. It's a console exclusive, the typical consumer is looking to pick between Xbox and PlayStation, not really worried about where PC stands in all of this.

@kutraz: Dunno but everytime MS brings out a game and say its an exclusive, the comments get all over how its not exclusive coz its also on PCs.

So,what ppl say about MS should also be true to Sony...or it will just be a selective memory case by case.

We should treat everything the same, right?

I must repeat that Godfall is not a PS5 exclusive where the PCs gets it later down the road.

It will launch on PCs and PS5 day 1. Its a multiplattform game which just doesnt include the Xbox(or the Switch).

Lastly,on Xbox related article its the Xbox which get shady comments,in PS5 related articles you will find shady comments about the PS5.

Stay above those things 👍

@sladakrobot:

Isn't every Xbox game exclusive also available to PC? If that is true, Xbox has seen no real exclusives since the original Xbox, no?

Nobody is saying that the race for next gen is between PlayStation, Xbox, AND PC's, so why have PC dictate game exclusivity is beyond me.

I think its a silly argument to make but I imagine it's because you ran out of ideas.

But even then, Xbox series X will have ZERO next gen exclusives when releasing the new console. But based on your logic of Console/PC exclusives , they never will

The fact of the matter is, the Xbox community will be playing Xbox one remasters for at least year, having payed hundreds of dollars for an upgrade. If that does not bother you or the Xbox community, by all means let Microsoft have at it with your money.

Sorry but that reminds me of selective reading.

And no,there is no Xbox exclusive...the term is MS exclusive as you can play such games on MS gaming devices and devices powered by windows.

@sladakrobot: When I call them Xbox remasters I mean games that are just an after thought for the next gen consoles. It’s not taking into account originality. AGAIN, Xbox user will not have any title for a minimum of a year that was created with only the next gen in mind. NO “Next gen exclusive”

What reminds you of selective reading?? you have let go of every single one of your arguments? That reminds me of “weak counterarguments”....

So instead of back stepping on your silly PC logic and saying that it is not part of the equation for the new console sales of this year, we follow through by arguing that Xbox has never had an exclusive?

At that point, Sony is really competing against PC not Xbox...

I agree, at this point just take a knee and don’t reply, unless you can back up your weak arguments

@kutraz: "When I call them Xbox remasters I mean games that are just an after thought for the next gen consoles."

I know how you ment it and i didnt wanted to go into it but since you said it again and obviously seriously believe what you said,i must clarify how wrong you are.

A game made for the XbsX is made for the most advanced plattform(XBsX) and then scaled down to XBX or XBs.

You can see it like the XBx and XBs get "ports" of the XBsX version.

Works like that on PCs for decades..the pc with the best graphic card and processor gets the version with all the bells and whistles and the guy with an 10yrs old pc can play it too but has to make compromises in resolution, framerate, shaders, textures etc.

On top,i see it as a big plus that ppl with a new console can play together with all the gamers who will keep the current console for at least a year.

By your logic,PS4 players was playing remasters of PS3 games for the first year too(Destiny,Tomb Raider,COD etc)

@sladakrobot: I also understand where your logic was headed but once again I have to clarify what I meant and explain just how wrong you are..

PC's do not have generations, they are constantly evolving so there is never a hold on the hardware and potential. At the same time, if you look at how much an average gaming PC goes for, its close to 1k. This is important because if the hardware is never locked and nobody is trying to game 2020 titles using a computer from the early 2000's, you are safe to cater your title for the more current gamer. In other words, the number of gamers trying to use an old 2000's PC to game is so small, that you are safe to create a game that is optimally played using the most advanced hardware. This in combination with the fact that PC hardware is always evolving, so expensive high end parts today, will be fairly cheap in the span of a year.

Now, this system of business does not translate over to consoles. Unlike PC's, console hardware will be locked for ever after it launches. That means that gamers cannot simply swap out the GPU for a newer model. Also, the reason neither Xbox(which they have ZERO) and PlayStation do not simply stop producing current gen tiles and focus on next gen from the get go, is because after the next gen consoles launch, their market will still be made up of mostly current gen/old gen users. Now, if your market is mostly old gen users, the logic is to still make games with last gen in mind, while new gen is secondary. For example, the ratchet and clank game they showcased during the last PS5 event made use of the SSD by having constant pop in and literally dimensions setting changes within 2 seconds. If this game were to be made cross gen, you would not be able to pull that off for current gen users. The hardware is not at the level, that is why the game will be a next gen exclusive. The only reason cross gen titles are a thing is because of the slow transition from console generation to the next.So cross gen titles are meant to keep the old gen gamer in the loop, yet rachet and crank type of improvements go out the window because they won't work. Hence, cross gen titles are made with last gen in mind first, and then up-scaled to new gen after. This next gen enhancement, does not compare to a game that was built from scratch with only the new gen in mind.

Pc gaming does not have "generations", it literally is a mass of gamers always improving their hardware, chasing the latest and greatest. Console gamers are buying a fixed product, other than upgrading to next gen, there is nothing to chase. So no, the PC logic does not carry over.

Lastly, I am talking about Xbox not having any titles that are exclusives to the new console. Both consoles will have remasters of their last gen because both will have cross gen titles, but unlike XBox, PS5 will launch with titles that cater to just the new gen users.

Seriously man, just take a knee or come back at me with another weak argument...

@sladakrobot:

WRONG again, for the 10th time. Honestly I did not think you would respond, its been like a week...

Anyways, there are no assumptions here. Matt Booty,Head of Microsoft studios, stated that there would be no next generation exclusives for at least a year after launch. So every Xbox series X game you play will be cross gen for the time being, with December 2021 being best case scenario in regards to next gen exclusives.

Also, consoles hardware IS fixed,

"Unlike PC's, console hardware will be locked for ever after it launches. That means that console gamers cannot simply swap out their GPU for a newer model. This next gen "up-scaling", does not compare to a game that was built from scratch with only the new gen in mind."

This is why next gen Xbox gamers will only be playing Xbox one remasters. Microsoft will not be making proper use of the new hardware for at least a year.

I honestly don't know how your backwards compatibility argument has anything to do with this (below):

"Consoles WAS a fixed product where you had to cut all the ties to the past gen...MS doesnt look at it like that, just accept this."

--You are still not getting any games that are built from the ground up for next gen.--

If you are going to reply, please do some research on Microsoft's business model for the Series X. I have a feeling you are arguing using your emotions at this point...

@kutraz: I am sorry i dont have a future proof glassball to look into, like you do.

Since you can, tell me which 1st party games MS will show up in July!

We know of 2 exclusives: Halo Infinite and Hellblade 2.

The May Show has shown at least 3 games only for next gen Xbox...where you watching that at all?

Its a very poor attempt of yours since you have absolutley zero information in your hands.

"Pc gaming does not have "generations", it literally is a mass of gamers always improving their hardware, chasing the latest and greatest. Console gamers are buying a fixed product, other than upgrading to next gen, there is nothing to chase. So no, the PC logic does not carry over."

Oh gawd, lets hope an avid pc gamer didnt saw your comment LOL

Consoles WAS a fixed product where you had to cut all the ties to the past gen...MS doesnt look at it like that, just accept this.

Your reply are getting more and more agressive, toxic and with wrong/false claims so post whatever you want after this but it will be not readed by me.

@kutraz: Strange, the power advantage seemed to be sooo important back in 2013/14.

It can't be dismissed as just "stop saying the silly teraflop buzzword". Series X has more compute units and higher memory bandwidth, so it's more powerful in the same ways the PS4 was more powerful back then.

Plus the Series X will be able to do machine learning upscaling (look up what DLSS does on PC for an idea of what a difference this makes), which -maybe- the PS5 will be able to do too but we haven't heard about Sony or AMD developing their own version of it. So far it's only an Nvidia and Microsoft thing.

@kutraz said:

It's because you guys were in 2013, when PS4 had a advantage over the Xbox.

"Nov/Dec you guys will be paying top dollar to keep on playing Xbox One games right?"

You know there's going to be whole bunch of new multi platform games coming out for both consoles right ? and by the way most people don't have a gaming PC so those games don't count against the Xbox. Plus the exclusives Sony has coming out is nothing to brag about. Start using your brain please.

If the titles are coming out for both consoles, how is that win for Xbox???

"Start using your brain please" is not mutually exclusive...

@kutraz: games are still being made with the Xbox Series X hardware and will look and play as a next gen title and then downgraded for previous gens. This is how PCs work... it’s not difficult.

Once we start seeing games that can’t utilize the old hardware then we will start seeing next gen exclusives. By the time you start seeing these PS exclusives, Xbox will be out with their next gen exclusives.

So you’re being asked to upgrade to a PS5, to play games that can run on PS4, within the first year without getting any options. That’s what you should be criticizing.

@Shantmaster_K: If the current gen is the bigger market developers are creating games around that and then enhancing them for new gen.

The PC comparison irrelevant. If it was that simple or consoles, you could have old Xbox and ps2 titles being truly remastered every other day. Look at the final fantasy 7 remake they released earlier this year, they literally had to build the game from scratch and took years and years. Avoiding this route of enhancing a game would lead to another superficial remaster, aka God of war 3 remaster for Ps4 etc. Try a pc game from the 90's and crank up the setting to max, let me know how groundbreaking the graphics look. This is because the game is capped because it was made with a completely different system of specs in mind.

Anyways, go ahead and give me a cross gen title where the different gen versions looked night and day different..

Consoles are locked in terms of hardware so the ability to tweak graphics setting is nonexistent. Developers know exactly what they are working with, so unless you have a scenario where you make a game for current gen and also release a remake, you will have very similar looking games. This goes back to my first point, the bigger market takes priority, so you build the best game possible around that console and if yu have a newer models, enhance it. But the enhancement is is being added on top of a last gen build of the game, not the other way around.

@kutraz: Again, the only big name title you have at launch is Spider-Man, the rest are a bunch of indie exclusives. Not exactly something to be getting all excited over, since most of titles will be on both systems...Xbox will have Halo at launch enough to match your Spider-Man, won't know much more until the event next month. Perhaps, you should wait a month(for the event) before talking about how there's ZERO next gen titles for Xbox Series X or else you just sound ignorant.

@bababooey12: Again, regardless of what they show next month, Matt booty already stated that for at least a year all titles released would have to cater to current gen. Just like your Halo example, it is being released for the series X but it’s also being released for the X box one. Hence the X box one remaster. It’s not a next gen exclusive. Also like I stated before, there are no examples where cross gen titles where night and day when comparing old gen and new gen. Developers have to cater to the bigger market which would be current gen owners and later enhance the version for the next gen folks. Still, the games are made with the old gen in mind and next gen being secondary. Which goes back to my initial point, it is a slap on the face to gamers when they are pitched a new console but have only old gen titles to play. So yes we’ll have to wait and see, maybe Microsoft realizes how dumb of an idea it is and include next gen exclusive tiles but that would go against what Matt Booty already made clear since the beginning of the year. Cross your fingers and the latter happens

@kutraz: Matt had said this because they don't want those who are staying on Xbox One feel forced to upgrade just to be able to play a game like Halo Infinite see nothing wrong with that....if you think games like Halo Infinite and other next gen games coming out are only going to be made with Xbox One in mind, willing to bet you are wrong....there are no examples right now comparing the Xbox Series X to the Xbox One game wise because they haven't even had their event yet....Microsoft's business strategy isn't to just simple play an exclusive game that looks like a current gen, game will still play and look better on the SX than the One. I guess time will tell...

@bababooey12: I get the intention behind the model, but it also makes it hard to justify the upgrade, the new console will cost hundreds of dollars so the enhanced games better match the price. This wouldn't be an issue if Microsoft had not closed the door on next gen exclusives for at least a year. Again, hard to be excited about the launch when I have to wait 12 months to make proper use of what I bought

That is all I am saying.

@kutraz: I'm sure the enhanced games will match the price. I see the difference, easily from Xbox One to S to the X I have now. The only thing that might not match is FPS, if the game is developed for 30FPS then the SX would the same I would imagine anyway. Also you mentioned the Kinect, this is nothing like it. The kinect was something most didn't want, nice idea but didn't really care for it, that and they had nothing worthwhile to use with it....(games etc).

@bababooey12: We'll have to wait and see but I for one, have never seen cross gen titles being worlds apart when comparing both versions. Both PlayStation and Xbox have under delivered in that regard. But since it sounds like you are rooting for Microsoft, cross your fingers and hope that this gen leap does things differently. Otherwise, be prepared to wait it out for at least a year...

@kutraz:

Wrong dummy.

XseX versions will be fully optimised to take full advantage of its 12.16 tflops and new features that the SSD will enable like instant resume, fast game asset streaming etc etc.

Ps5 is only 9.2 tflops. The ps5 GPU and CPU cannot run at peak performance simultaneously which means 10.2 tflops was sony misleading their fans. If the GPU is running at peak performance the CPU will have to throttle back and vice versa. If the CPU is running at peak performance then the GPU will throttle back. So in reality sony were misleading when they said 10.2tflops. Ps5 will most likely be 9.2 which gives XseX a huge advantage at 12.16tflops. And actually there’s been a rumour going around that Microsoft might be increasing/upgrading XseX performance somehow before release.

@gamerbum: lol. that is like saying an "OC RTX 2080 Super" has a huge advantage over an RTX 2080. While neither can touch the Ti. Hope you get it. Tflop advantage won't matter if ps5 pro drops. Which does not need to happen because not many people cared about the xb1x or ps4 pro. If MS drops a weaker version, most regular people will get the cheaper version anyway. None of this really matters in the end. You will buy your system, I will buy mines. You be on xbox live, I will probably play single player games. So what, none of this matters. Are you Microsoft? Is this why you care so much about a console which you will gain no revenue from the sales? Oh yeah, forgot to ask, how come xbox bois only post in Sony threads and not their own? You post more on this side than you do on your own. Which I find funny.

@gamerbum: you think that 2-3 “teraflops” is going to be some insane advantage...it won’t be. The reason last gen people were so on PS4 was because Xbox completely botched their Xbox one initial reveal and PS4 was more powerful while being cheaper, with no required camera/motion capture.

This is a such a generational leap going to 7nm Zen2 processes, nobody said the Xbox won’t have SSD speeds, they’ll just be half of that of Sony’s PS5 SSD which will be lightning fast, while the Series X will still be VERY snappy, definitely not close to PS5 in storage tech in the long haul, although best realized on PS5/PC only games. PS5 also has a dedicated memory controller on its chip that takes a lot of overhead off of the CPU, gimme my “10Tflop” PlayStation any day of the damn weeek.

@gamerbum: Got sources on that? Also it's too late to do any upgrades, architecture is locked in at this point. Too bad all those tflops go to waste while waiting for assets to load and move around the pipeline. That sweet Unreal 5 demo cannot run on the XsX's slow I/O pipeline at any usable fps. Guess that makes folks mad and they gotta flex whatever they got......

@darkelf83: That UE5 demo ran on a gaming laptop with a standard SSD!

Also,it ran at 1440p/30fps and Epic worked 6 months on that demo!

The UE5 demo was a UE demo,not a PS5 demo,you must understand this.

Every PC and the XbsX will run demo as its anUE demo which is made to work on every plattform possible.

@darkelf83: You act as if the XSX won't also have a SSD to go with its more powerful GPU and CPU( yes the SSD is half, but still has one)...funny because it was said that the demo could run on XSX, it was just shown on PS5.....maybe next month we'll get a chance to see something like that. The ball is in Microsoft's court now. I'm willing to bet with their event next month and first party titles being shown, they'll have a few surprises up their sleeves, at least I'm hoping.

Fact is, Sony didn't realize what Xbox series x Specs would boost and this threw Sony off the Edge. 10.28 tflops just sounds like last minute overclocking to try and close the gap and that's probably one of the reasons the ps5 is huge. The reality is that it's more around 9.2tflops of power. But the SSD is truly amazing inside ps5. Microsoft should of made one last adjustment/change on Xbox series x and put in a slightly better SSD like the 970 Evo or something. Regardless this generation is gonna be big and amazing for all gamers.

It looks like Sony got caught off guard by Microsoft's announcement of the 12TF Series X, leaving them with no choice other than overclocking the PS5 and putting inside a case double the size they initially intended for it.

The disc drive confirms it, as they had to take it out of their original design and stuffed on its side.

@johnny0779: If you bothered to watch the architecture deep dive, you'd know they couldn't just overclock it and stuff it in a bigger case. I don't see where you think they were caught off guard.

They've designed the system around a far better I/O pipeline instead of just throwing more GPU at it.

@darkelf83: That and I think the main reason why they moved the disc drive to its spot is to keep it away from the hottest part of the system. I noticed with the PS4 that the disc drive is pretty close to the hottest part of it and is likely responsible for that oily rainbow effect you see on the bottom of discs. I know people say it's a blu-ray thing, but I don't buy that. I think it's a hot disc thing. I checked all of my games and discovered all of the games I own that have never been played or only inserted long enough to check them, and those games too low tier to get the cooling fan running, are completely free of that oily effect.

Sony has been reported to make comments in the past that the upgraded cooling option(along with other PC components) for the PS5 is costing more than they anticipated and the size of the console is just one way of achieving that.

That is one of the reasons why I think the more powerful Xbox Series X with its simplified but efficient PC like tower form factor with a large heat sink and a single large fan on one end will cost less than the PS5 at launch time.

@firedrakez: They’re both losing money on hardware, Sony is much bigger console worldwide they can afford it, as well as Microsoft. I don’t think either console will be far off $499 price point.

I personally don’t mind either aesthetic, I do like the two tone, primarily white that Sony went with along with their futuristic design if I had to pick. Series X is very minimalist which a part of me appreciates and likes.

@VGjunkie87: Unfortunately Sony in it's last quarterly report massive drops in revenue with losses in their electronics and entertainment(music, movie and theater) divisions due to the Covid pandemic. Only the Playstation division has kept them above water.

That combined with the higher costs of their console will make it difficult for them to match Microsoft on pricing with the next gen console launch this fall.

At the same time the trillion dollar Microsoft(which already has a bigger balance sheet than Sony) declared year on year increases in revenue and profit on all their divisions(software, cloud infrastructure and gaming) this quarter. More importantly Xbox management said that they will be flexible with their Xbox Series X pricing so that they can be competitive with the PS5.

The Xbox Series X is similar in shape and most importantly performance to other high end PCs like the Corsair One(with its mini ITX case) that normally costs $2800 retail. The Xbox Series X will most likely sell for more than 5x less.

Unfortunately I am not a fan of the black and white dual tone color scheme of the PS5. It also doesn't look that nice especially on it's side as it looks unbalanced and unstable with it's center of gravity off center

@firedrakez: yes it’s definitely subjective either way, it is a good thing it’s a console and not a commercial plane! They’ll still both be within $50 of one another, and If you could only have 1 console maybe it is the Series X, but I think after 14-18 months (if not earlier) we’ll see it’s actually PS5. Only time will tell.
