The PS5 Is A Big Console For A Good Reason

According to some recent details, the size is due to an increased need for cooling, among possible other reasons.

When it was revealed last month, many people were surprised by the striking design of the PS5, which abandons the black box design of recent console generations for bold curves and a striking black-and-white color scheme. While it didn't take long for players to start making memes about the appearance of the console, others have noted its increased size over its predecessors, the PS4 and even the original "fat" PS3. That giant size is, according to one Sony employee, because the console generates an enormous amount of heat. With that much power comes a need to keep the system cool, and a huge case was necessary.

When one commenter asked on LinkedIn why the console is so bulky--as spotted by VG247--PlayStation's vice president of UX design Matt MacLaurin replied: "Thermals. This gen is little supercomputers. While the 7nm process delivers amazing heat performance for the power, the power is very extreme."

Now Playing: First Look at PS5 Console | Sony PS5 Reveal Event

However, there might be other reasons for the large size. A leaked patent seems to suggest that Sony is building a cartridge that might work with the PS5. Some observers have speculated that it's an external solid-state drive that will slot into the console for memory management, but there's no official word if that's the case. We still don't know how much the PS5 will cost, or the PS5's full line-up of games, but odds are likely that more details will come out over the coming weeks. Most of its announced first-party games are also not going to be ready for launch. However, it should receive plenty of third-party support out of the gate. This includes sports games like Madden and NBA 2K, and presumably the Call of Duty series. Some of these will be cross-generational releases, and certain publishers are also allowing players to upgrade for free when the newer version becomes available.

The Xbox Series X is also a huge console, but it sports a PC-like form factor that is more familiar to players. The console, like the PS5, can be placed horizontally or vertically. It doesn't look like it will require a stand to do so, however.

And the rumors are that the games will cost as much $65.00 per disc to due to the coast of development cost of system. In which Sony has already said the games will cost more than PS4 this time around so I just hopes everyone keeps this in mind when buying both consoles this gen I think I might.

@aross2004: if you weren't so lazy you could do a google search yourself.

PlayStation 5 games will finally go beyond the $60 price tag people have become used to over the last decade or so as development costs for games are expected to increase with the coming of the next-generation console. Video games have been at the $60 price point for quite some time now (since as far back as the PS3 and Xbox 360 era), but development costs have only risen further since then.

@notafan: Games in Canada have been $90 for years. I have a hard time feeling bad for anyone having to pay more than $59 for them.

@notafan: He's a gamer. Of course he's lazy.

And they've been talking about increasing the price of games every generation. They always settle back down into the $60 range. Gamers refuse to budge from that price...assuming they buy day 1 at all (yay for sales). Frankly, I'm surprised we still get as many AAA game as we do. They're simply not feasible anymore. You're better off creating a cutesy low-budget multiplayer game and hoping it takes off.

PS5 looks like futuristic trash, Sony is effing crazy in the head for making this thing as it looks. Xbox or PC all the way this time. Plus both console and the controller glow blue now how effing lame. It's like they designed this for a 12 year old.

@cage_92: I've seen 20+ reaction videos of the reveal and as yet I've not seen anyone hate it. Most love it and a couple were on the fence. I think it looks great and it'll almost certainly become available in different colours. I imagine a fair few would like all black.

Xbox is a safe, some may say boring, box design. In the end the look doesn't matter much really. If the PS5 controller is like the DS4 then the light changes colour corresponding to in game events, like it'll turn red when health is low or flash blue & red when you have a wanted level in GTA so it's not purely an aesthetic thing.

@Pyrosa: Well it means you can remove the health bar from the screen if you can glance at your controller to see how much health you have left instead. Some people don't like their screen cluttered with UI.

BS I just built a new PC last year and didn't install any RGB lights, it's a choice. Here with the PS5 no effing choice.

@cage_92: I actually think it looks really cool. It was very bold and daring of them to design it the way they did. It looks nothing like the rest of the gaming world, which screams Sony to me.

@cage_92: lol, you mention PC but don't realize that alienware cases have been uglier. The more you expect things to remain the same, the more people will try to change the game. Which is what is happening. I could care less how it looks as long as it plays the games I like.
