The New Tales RPG for PS4/PC, Tales of Berseria, Coming in Early 2017

Less than a year to go for the new Bandai Namco RPG.

49 Comments

Tales of Berseria will be released outside of Japan in early 2017, Bandai Namco announced today.

Berseria, the latest entry in the long-running Tales series, was first announced back in December 2015. While Japan's release (slated for this August) will see it come to PS4, PS3, and PC, in the West we'll only be seeing the PS4 and PC versions.

Now Playing: Tales of Berseria - Teaser Trailer

The release window was confirmed today by the official Tales Twitter account. Additionally, the series' official blog provided new details on aspects of the game's combat system. Specifically, today's post explains the Switch Blast system, which allows you to designate one character as the backup for another, and reveals some of the abilities that characters Eizen and Eleanor have at their disposal.

Bandai Namco also shared some background information about those two characters, as well as Aifread's pirates. You can read more about them here.

No Caption Provided

The most recent entry in the Tales series was 2015's Tales of Zestiria, which came to North America and Europe about 10 months after Japan.

Nice but what I really want is a remaster (or even just a rerelease) of Tales of Vesperia. I heard really good things about this game (only really got into the Tales series with Xilia 1, didn't like Symphonia as a young in JRPGs inexpierienced Teenager) but I don't have a 360 and the PS3 version seems to be japan exclusive for a reason.

So I really hope Bandai Namco decides to rerelease Vesperia on Steam or make a PS3/PS4 collection with multiple tales games including Vesperia or something...

This is great news!! My first Tales game was their latest, Tales of Zestiria and sure, it is no FF or Star Quest, but the amount of gameplay was something I appreciated in Zestiria. The ok story and predictable story was overlooked by the multiple locations and the various customization options. Also, the different events that could be discovered differing by your party members added that replayable concept for me. I do feel a LOT of things could have been done better, but 2 reasons I believe this is a must buy for me are- 1. The RPG list for PS4 needs as many additions it's library as possible & 2. I've done a little research and the plot and battle system seem much more interesting and improved from previous entries. I love this news and hope dev's continue this trend and bring many more RPG's to PS4!!

Until they really evolve the series, I don't think I will ever be excited for this game or this series in general anymore. It kinda reach the point where if you play the others in the series, you may had already know how this one will turn out.

I'll wait for the reviews before I think about buying this. I loved Tales of Symphonia, and I tolerated Dawn of the New World, but Zestiria was awful. The story and characters were so shallow and cliched that I had to stop playing after about 30 hours, which was a first for me.

If this is not 30fps locked like Tales of Zestira, it's a day 1 buy for me.

One thing about the tales games over the last 15years, is that you know what you are getting. May not be perfect games, but for their cost you can depend on a great looking JRPG with 30+ hrs of gameplay and a over the top story. Game looks great cannot wait to play.

For a long time, I was a really big Tales series fan. But two things are preventing me from being excited about this game:

1. I've been more and more underwhelmed by the last several games in the series. Unless this turns out to be a return to the quality of Vesperia, I'm holding off.

2. I don't have a PS4 and my laptop probably can't run the game (at least not well). And since the PS3, a system I actually have, version apparently isn't getting localized at all, that's even more reason to give it a pass.

I have never complained about graphics before. I usually defend games as long as the gameplay is strong. But that...looks like contemporary free-to-play quality all around. I really hope I'm wrong.

What i love about the Tales games is that it sticks true to its JRPG roots, unlike Final Fantasy where they try too hard to westernize everything and the result is FF13 and FF15 and wind up being a huge mess, I loved tales of the Abyss, I havent had much of a chance to try out tales of Zysteria but would like to give it a go, unfortunately I'm currently no that drawn to it yet but that might change in time, this game however has caught my interest, give me!

@Dark_sageX: Zestiria fell into that unfortunate trend.... It's just bland and lacks what made earlier games great. I'd say pass it and hope for the best with this new one.

I still haven't completely beaten Zestiria...having trouble with the final boss on Chaos mode plus some other annoying stuff that I've pushed aside. I hope Berseria is even better than some of the latest Tales games.

I've never played a Tales of game before, but I'm slightly interested in this one. It's too bad the PC versions of these games I've heard aren't very good.

@jayz0ned: Unfortunately that doesn't hold true for Tales of Symphonia, which is the more recently released/ported game from the series.

@savagerodent: Both games were savaged by modders. Mod for Zestiria fixes frame pacing issues and enables 60fps. Mod for Symphonia allows for 4k resolution with outlines and fixes frame pacing issues. My only disappointment with Symphonia is that it couldn't be fixed to run at 60fps like the game cube version.

@pseudopsiakite: That's nice to know. Kind of surprising Symphonia doesn't run at 60fps if the game cube version does.

I think after being burnt on the last few entries I'll wait on this one. See what shakes out, if it turns out to be good I'll pick it up.

why does namco keep pumping mediocre tales of after mediocre tales of instead of taking more time to actually making it good ? this looks as horrible as the 3 last console entries *xillia crap and zestiria). Just take your damn time and give us an incredible tales of.

@El_Zaggy:
Same reason U-be-soft keeps releasing their crap games on a yearly basis.
Established titles have a large fanbase that they could easily profit off from and as long as there are suckers out there buying (and defending it), nothing would change.

@El_Zaggy: Well for me personally I loved Xillia thought it was one of the best ones along with Graces f. But Zestiria I wasn't to thrilled with it could have been much much better. I love the Tales game so I'm sure I'll get it but if it isn't better than the last entry I might have to hold off on the next one.

@El_Zaggy: because money.......

no publisher ever things that smart, eww we need the next one now cus our reserves are getting low, in a week we won't have any money for hookers, get at it slaves!!! Eh, so from publisher to publisher we see what's happening here and what happened to KOTOR 2, DA2, ME3 and tha cavalcade of warmonger games, I might joke about how stuff goes down but it's pretty close regardless, suits want money and the dev has to obey....

at least in music the band can just quit saying they're retiring due to the stress or that they feel like artistic achievement was met which was what happened to The Police after their Synchronicity album....ended on a high note, people still love em....had they kept working well look at Sting, he kinda faded into obscurity....

I'm trying to not lose interest with the Tales series. I've played many of them leading up to Graces, which is my favourite. Then Xillia really dragged, Xillia 2 became a grindfest, and Zestiria just... wasn't very good. So after three Tales games in a row that I couldn't bare to finish, I really want this one back on form.

They need to bring the older games to PC as well, preferably GoG. There are some greats JRPGs lost to 360 exclusivity.

Or, hey, how about a big PS3 "Tales of" collection? Now that would rock.

to be honest, I found zestiria a little...lacking, it was nowhere near to grace or even xillia 1/2 plus they remove lots of stuff that were like standard in all previous games, I hope they redeem with this one

@baral-o: Graces is my favourite. I haven't much liked any since then either. I actually did really enjoy much of Xillia, but it was going on a bit so I quit after they got to Elympios. X2 and Zestiria were ruined by poor design and I didn't finish them either.

@hateforumgeeks:

This game might not have good graphics, but I have not seen any jRPG game on vita that looks half as good as this

Also, if you play vita games on monitor or TV, it won't look so good because of the low resolution (also low texture resolution). The resolution is 540p and some games run below native resolution like Uncharted: Golden Abyss (it is only 720x408)

@hateforumgeeks: Most JRPGs have bad graphics. Only the really big JRPGs (not necessarily big content wise) like Final Fantasy have good graphics. The devs that make the bad graphics games tend to release way more games than the big ones so they're really just investing in churning out more games instead of investing in having good graphics. Ffor example there's been roughly 30 each of Tales and Neptunia games since the last Final Fantasy.
