The Last Word: Oct. 31-Nov. 6

Kinect's launch week brought with it a bevy of reviews, previews, news headlines, and video offerings.

This week something strange was afoot at the GameSpot offices. Inside preview rooms and even in cubicles, editors were dancing with abandon, throwing virtual bowling balls, and petting imaginary tiger cubs.

Kinect in the wild.
Kinect in the wild.

Don't worry, readers--staffers here weren't experiencing a mass hallucination. This week saw the debut of the Kinect, the motion-sensing system that plucked players off of their posteriors and instead had them flailing their limbs like tasered news anchors.

GameSpot covered the peripheral's debut from all angles, including reviews of Dance Central, Kinect Sports, and Kinectimals. Find out more in the full Kinect coverage below.

NEWS
Earningspalooza continued at the GameSpot Newsdesk this week, with the latest financials from THQ, EA, Activision Blizzard, Konami, Namco Bandai, and Square Enix. Other notable headlines included the launch of the fall Xbox 360 update, which brought editable Netflix queues, ESPN channels, Kinect connectivity, and more to Microsoft's console. Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi said that Gran Turismo 5 has finally gone gold and that work on Gran Turismo 6 is already under way. Then there was the not-so-small matter of the PSP2's existence being confirmed by a loose-lipped EA executive and NBA Elite 11 being canceled outright.

PREVIEWS
The week in previews was dominated by an EA Studio Showcase in London, where the GameSpot UK office saw several upcoming games from the Redwood Shores-based publisher. On the list were new looks at Medal of Honor's upcoming DLC, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam, Crysis 2 multiplayer, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. And toward the end of the week once the team was done with all those EA stories, the UK office also had a look at Test Drive Unlimited 2.

REVIEWS
November is always a busy and exciting month for the reviews team, and this one is no exception. Call of Duty: Black Ops is coming next week, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit aren't far off, and this week Microsoft's new Kinect hardware arrived on store shelves alongside around a dozen launch titles. Reviews for a handful of those Kinect games are already up on the site, and the team is working hard to get the rest covered as soon as possible. Expect several of those to hit next week, and be sure to check out any of this week's reviews that you might have missed:

VIDEO
The Microsoft Kinect for the Xbox 360 was released this week, and the GameSpot Live team worked hard to bring the latest video reviews. Justin Calvert took a stab at Kinect Sports, Kevin VanOrd got cuddly with Kinectimals, and Chris Watters got jiggy with it in Dance Central. GameSpot also brought a double dose of Bond with James Bond 007: Blood Stone and GoldenEye 007 for the Wii. Today On the Spot featured games like Dead Space 2, Fallout: New Vegas, The Fight: Lights Out, and more! Rounding out this week's coverage, we had a Now Playing episode featuring Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer.

bottom line: kinect is, for right now, a great family game night accessory. nothing more. you show me a reason to buy kinect (like when steel batallion comes out). i've seen the games coming out and im really unimpressed at this time. further more KUDO IS A MORON who presented the kinect like it was gods gift to gaming. honestly though, the technology IS a good start to motion controlled gaming, but eff man....we need buttons....the sony move is trying to come out with games that are beyond casual, but they're not giving us anything to write home about either. lets all go over to the GT5 launch center a bicker about GT5 vs. Forza....at least there were not debating against a technology that hasn't matured or even been given enough thought yet.

@HUNTER-VENOM Sony whore? Son, I've got over 50 games for the 360. I buy all consoles and sometimes one of them just drops the ball when it comes to a hardware release, this time it's MS with Kinect. I'm not basing my opinion on Move on myth, I OWN one and I've played games with it. The technology genuinely IS amazing, and given the accuracy and response time, makes for much more intuitive and natural motion gaming.

Most of the kinects are on ebay right now. It isn't selling and staying in people's homes, and for good reason. After about 20 mins playing it with my friends, it got boring just like the wii and move.

I work at Best Buy and we are sold out of the Kinect by itself but have way to many bundles no one is buying them. The move seems to be moving very well, I would say it is selling more now than the first few weeks of the launch. Over all from the demos I would say the Move is a better product.

@DDR Midian, I don't think either Move or Kinect are going to be doing things perfectly, not yet anyways. Should we expect it to? Especially with the new tech. I played the Move, and yes it is very responsive, or accurate, but the overall games I've played on it weren't that captivating. I'm sure though, that both these devices will eventually pop out a few hits off those machines. Also , have you played or had a chance to mess around with Kinect? If not, it may be a little too early to judge it.

I agree with punanisher, which I'm not really into the motion gaming stuff, and is the reason I haven't invested in the Wii yet, but the Kinect does offer me a few things that I do find appealing. Voice recognition and the ability to recognize the user is a pretty neat feature. I am also looking forward to navigating the menus hands free, especially once they get the games up and running on the ESPN feature that's now available. I'm sure a lot of the games for the Kinect will be shovelware, but I also believe there will be a few good titles, and therefore I will have to be forking out some loot before the holidays, unless I can't find one! I know a lot of people are hating on Kinect , but I think it is rather interesting, and it shouldn't come as a shock to anyone that both Sony, and Microsoft were going to try to emulate the Wii, and rake in some of that $$ that Nintendo was. So, I hope it succeeds to a extent, but not to the point where my preferred, sit my fat @ss on my sofa and wiggle my thumbs, are phased out.

I don't care for motion controls but my wife wants the Kinect for Christmas. While I personally believe it is overpriced and not that spectacular, it is selling like crazy. Today alone, I went to 2 Best Buys and 2 Gamestops. All sold out (except the system bundles). One of the Best Buys had a demo tent set up with the Move and Kinect. Lets just say one side had a huge line while the other was empty.

@DDR_Midian depends on the game and developers behind the game because not all Move games are "perfect" or Moves functions. Sounds like your a Sony whore and just listen to what they say and not with the end result such as "The Fight: Lights Out" yeah but hey! sense Sony's Move "response time is amazing, the accuracy is amazing, the fact it has buttons... is amazing" the game should work right? Move doesn't do anything "perfectly" ether 3.0 on IGN buddy lol. Everyone knows Kinect isn't perfect from the reviews but it's playable and a lot of it's games wont make you throw it against the wall and that's good because they can keep improving.

Problem is all the Nursing Homes and VFW / bars already have the Wii. So big N has already hit the non-gamer market. Been months since I have fire up my Wii. Still play my 360 all the time and my PS3 sometimes. Just not in any hurry to buy. But thats just me...

@XboxGuy1537 Yeah not biased at all. Try being a gamer instead of a MS whore. The Move response time is amazing, the accuracy is amazing, the fact it has buttons... is amazing. Kinect is a clever bit of tech, but it just doesn't do anything perfectly.

@PandaBear86 I don't own Move or kinect but problem here is that after reading several reviews, kinect is not what microsoft promised, it has limitations like games, it's slower to navigate through the dashboard than using a X360 control and you need a lot space, it's not just one website, many websites said this. Just like move, launch titles are really bad and those don't make kinect worth the price. And we don't to try those games, many of those games is not what we want to play. Games for us, not just casuals, will make kinect a worth purchase.

@tequilasunriser You're wrong, my first comment wasn't directed at you and the fact that you think it was just shows how self-conceited you are. It was a general statement referring to the army of angry people who somehow seem to find their way to every single Kinect or Move related article to flame it (as they have here). The fact that you think you are the next authority on video games is laughable, telling people what is hip and not and what is hardcore and not. Newsflash: No one but yourself really takes your opinions seriously, you really think customers are going to buy or not buy the product based on a clueless post? I also love how you assume that you are right because you "own all systems and hate them all equally in favor of your PC". Why buy them then? Let's all take advice from somebody who wasted $1k of his parents' money on systems he dislikes. Oh let's not forget this is the internet, so he CAN'T be lying. The verdict so far from reviews on different websites (not from my own personal experience because I do not own a Kinect) is that it's a good piece of technology that has a lot of potential based on how good its software will be in the near future, regardless of your biased and baseless opinion. PS: I'm not gonna waste any more of my time on an obvious troll like you, so flame away because that's all you know how to do, I won't be checking back.

What I really get annoyed about is that these TIME OF FLIGHT camers are NOTHING new and MS has not even come up with the tech. but every news stroy never gets into that. Its always MS new tech is going to change the world. This new gesture tech will bring the future soon. -_- Sony can, and I think will NEXT gen incorporate the same TIME OF FLIGHT tech with its MOVE controlers.

I bet you $50 that most of the people that hate Kinect havent even TRIED playing a single game on it. They just love to complain. Makes me laugh whenever people slam the PlayStation Move. I had the Move since launch day and I love it, it actually works perfectly and all the haters are wrong about it. I bet the same is true for Kinect.

@tequilasunriser I have no reason not to see the new generation of motion controls as anything but wholly original. I make this statement because I know some key points in the development of some of these debuting motion controllers. For example, I do know that << LINK REMOVED >> in its development history - when the Wii has obviously shown that the addition of accelerometers in Wii Remotes greatly increased its effectiveness. However, I would say the crux of this passage of mine is that your view of this practice of design-copying is different from my own. I, for one, acknowledge and accept that competitors eventually copy each others' design decisions - especially the more beneficial ones. This practice is a completely neutral kind of act to me; you instead see it as despicable and see these products as tainted. I wouldn't be giving any thought to any claims that Microsoft or Sony makes about their motion control products - to me, they are all Marketing-Speak, intended to entice the unwise into buying their products with only words of glamor. That said, I wouldn't be dissing these products either just because their makers are trumpeting them like they are the next big thing - they are blameless machines.

i had a blast playing kinect adventures today. gonna play it with the wife tomorrow. kinect does everything microsoft said it would. i have no problems with voice commands, face recognition, or the body and hand tracking. i dont really see any lag either my self with your body movement versus when your avatar does it on screen. i love the device. now if tuesday would get here faster so i can get my hands on cod black ops. after seeing that 1 hr long thing gamespot just had on the MP, it looks the multiplayer is WAY better than that crappy MW2 multiplayer.

@Gelugon_baat If you've ever used an eyetoy you'd now that Kinect is a glorified eyetoy. If you've used a gyroscopic air mouse you'd know that the Wii's motion controls are nothing new. The Playstation Move? Combine eyetoy with Wii motion controls. Simple as that. Maybe hearing that takes away some of the magic surrounding those pieces of hardware, but it's all been done. Of course a lot of these technologies have been improved over time, but such is life with all technology. All I was saying is that none of these motion controls are revolutionary, and of the three Kinect has been executed the worst.

@tequilasunriser
Nothing to see here folks. Move along.
I am not sure where you get the information to claim that these new bunch of gimmicks are worse than the previous generations, bandying words like "poor attempts" and "simplistic fashion". They are only just out, and whatever capabilities that they may have in the future and against those of their forebearers they were copied/adapted/improved upon from are not clear yet.

You could have just replaced all your comments as "I don't like Kinect and Move", instead of making such claims. Sure, there are reviews of these peripherals, but they are just reviews of gimmicks that are just only out. Whether they have any flaws or not, whether the games that had been and would be made for them are bad or not, the way that they will ultimately be perceived is by how the individual consumer beholds them.

Like you said, "whatever you say, chief", and the impression that I have of you is that you care little for the new generation of motion controls, and you could have just said that instead of trumpeting snarky blog posts that had the same opinion as yours.

@phatmatt030 "I play hardcore games. I play the cod and halo games." Mainstream of the mainstream, my friend. There is nothing hardcore about those games.
