Take-Two, GameStop shares fall on GTAV delay

Shares tumble after Rockstar pushes upcoming action game into September; "nothing new" to share about Wii U and PC versions.

Investors are not thrilled with today's Grand Theft Auto V delay. Shares of Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two Interactive and specialty retailer GameStop tumbled today upon news that GTAV would miss its spring release date, instead landing months later on September 17.

At press time, Take-Two shares are down 6.05 percent to $12.27, while GameStop fell 4.15 percent to $22.69. A Take-Two representative declined to comment, while GameStop was not immediately available.

Separately, a Rockstar Games representative told GameSpot today that there is "nothing new" to share regarding potential PC and Wii U versions of GTAV. Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser last year said these versions were "up for consideration," though today's announcement left them out.

Like any late gen release, I can guarantee GTAV is going to have a crap ton of content when it comes to customizing your character, side missions, economy, multiplayer etc. Graphics, world size, and AI are going to be hamstrung though by current console tech.

@6orange6 @Kastigador We'll see, but I think both Microsoft and Sony are wondering where they're going to make their money now that smart tv's do the basics fairly well for you avg consumer as far as internet services go and mobile casual gamers are where all the perceived growth is. With all the uncertainty and risks in the marketplace, they'll definitely scale back on the production costs of any new consoles accordingly. By the numbers, traditional gamers are becoming a niche and nothing is more niche friendly than PC because of it's flexibility and relative openness.

@dominoodle @Kastigador I have a 360 and never play it anymore. The grainy textures and blurry refresh is just painful to look at. IMHO PC releases of games are just so much sharper and easier to control, even if they're just basic ports using DX9. Rockstar needs to get on the PC bus if they intend to make cutting edge games in the future. The age of the high end console hardware that is sold at a loss and refreshed every 5 years has passed. In the future the shrinking pool of serious gamers that are willing to pay $50 for a title will switch back to the PC if they haven't already.

@dominoodle @Kastigador True. I don't have enough time to play every good game that comes out, so I simply ignore console only releases, as sad as it makes me sometimes, and focus on finding PC releases which I enjoy much more. It's also easier to buy them and play them quickly via platforms like steam.

@Kastigador I only use my xbox to play games that i can't get on PC like RDR, Halo etc.

I don't want to have to wait like 6 months after the console release to play it, IF it even gets ported =/

First of all, Rockstar did not have a release date, only Spring was just mention, Investors need to do some resurch that the biggest games useally come out in Fall seasons which is what Halo 4, Gears of War 3 ect. made the wait worth while and Investors are fools not to realies that Rockstar makes sure that there games are pollish and Bug free before they are release. Hey Gamespot, now that we have a September date release, Please no more article on GTA: V until near release date.

Well i pre ordred and if i can get my money back i will if i cant i wont be getting it the press release ask us to "Trust them" because it will be better how can i trust a company who sets a date and cant meet it i am a long time owner and player of rockstars games and i will not be getting or playing this one in fact i will be forgetting their company exists looking forward to arma 3 now good luck rockstar your gonna need it

I'd like to see a great improvement in AI performance and i would like to be able to just explore an actual world in a game, so a whole planet as your playground how cool would that be?

and i want to see the kind of realism you sometimes see in Cgi, over even better... but we will see soon enough

September? Really? Good luck getting people to buy it when the new consoles release two or three months later, consoles that may not even be backwards compatible mind you.

People aren't going to want to buy a $60 game that won't even play on their brand new $400-$500 console.

How am i (a gamestop employee) going to convince people to preorder this now?

@SingletreeAve @dominoodle I recall them saying that they're creating this game with current consoles specifically in mind, that they've learned how to take full advantage of the hardware similar to GTA: San Andreas on the PS2. But you could be right.

I wish they'd just announce it for PC already. Playing the game on outdated consoles doesn't interest me and the possibility of having to buy a next gen console just to have it look good really puts me off.
