Super Mario Odyssey Crosses 2 Million Copies Sold After Only 3 Days

Stompin' Goombas, movin' units.

Super Mario Odyssey was hotly anticipated, and it released last Friday to widespread critical acclaim. But it's still surprising just how well the game has sold in its first three days on the market: according to Nintendo, it's already sold around 2 million copies.

The news comes by way of Nintendo's financial earnings report. The numbers on the game are pretty crazy when you take into account the fact that the company has moved 7 million Nintendo Switch units. That means that, in only three days, just under 30% of all Switch users have purchased Super Mario Odyssey.

Now Playing: Super Mario Odyssey Video Review

It's safe to say that Super Mario Odyssey will likely continue to sell well, and Nintendo certainly wants to help move more units. In the earnings report, the company stated, "We will endeavor to further increase the number of consumers who want to purchase Super Mario Odyssey, and eventually we would like the game to be seen as an evergreen title that has longevity in the market beyond this holiday season."

Super Mario Odyssey is chasing the top spot on the Switch sales charts. As revealed earlier today, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild currently stands as the top-selling Switch game, having moved 4.7 million units as of the end of September. Next on the list is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with 4.42 million copies sold.

If you haven't heard already, the new Mario game is pretty awesome. In our 10/10 Super Mario Odyssey review, GameSpot critic Peter Brown wrote, "Odyssey is sustained beyond its major milestones not only through colorful worlds and hidden challenges, but through the sheer joy of controlling Mario, who's never felt more responsive or dynamic in action. Even with everything new that's been introduced, Nintendo's forward-thinking platformer retains the series' classic handcrafted appeal, which is even more impressive when you realize how densely packed each kingdom is."

I think the biggest compliment I can pay this game, is that no game has ever made me smile this much whilst playing!

It's an absolute joy to play and just so much fun.

We may have to see how well Odyssey sells in the long term and whether it will be among the highest-selling main Mario platformers.

@onesiphorus: I think as long as the Switch continues to sell, Odyssey will sell. It a Mario Kart Deluxe are probably going to be one of those games that hang around the top sellers for years.

@metallinatus: Who the heck says that in 2017? Many games are SP, or are barely MP (WD 1&2, MGSV TPP, AC, ME A, Uncharted, TLoU).

The only game that mostly sells due to MP despite having strong SP content is GTAV.

@metallinatus: Don't know when companies will realize to not base single player sales on the FPS genre which exist solely for MP for many. And many games that shove in MP thinking it will sell well, would have likely sold exactly the same if it didn't have it i.e. the Uncharted series.

@Sepewrath: Believe me, Odyssey only sold because of the minigames' leaderboards feature! This game is nothing without it....

Bought it on release day and I've been really enjoying it. Objectively it beats the pants out of Mario 64. It will never have the nostalgia that Mario 64 does and it will never be as revolutionary as Mario 64 was, but putting those things aside it's bigger, better, and it has more variety.

@jinzo9988: Really? When I picked up the controller on Odyssey for the first time, I immediately felt like I was playing Mario 64. Just the way that Mario controls feels a lot more like SM64 than any of the recent games.

It was nostalgic for me just running around.

Has only been 6 months and Switch already sold over half the amount of Wii-U's that have been sold after 5 years on the market. Wii-U was a HUGE flop lol.

@xOmniCloudx: If you remove the doctors and the casuals from the Wii sales, you'll see it wasn't any better than the Wii U. Many traditional gamers loathed the Wii in the long run. Hence the Wii U's performance.

Wow, they sold 7 million switches already? I had no idea it was doing that well. That's more then half of the wii u's total sales in less then 7 months. That's nuts. Also it doesn't surprise me that it sold this well. The Switch isn't exactly drowning in big must have software yet. If you aren't using it as a portable indie game machine you've probably somewhat starved for content. That and it looks like a really damn good game.

@Devil_wings00: Switch has a good bit of games dude.. Zelda, MK8, SPlatoon 2, ARMs, Pokken Tournament, Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario + Rabbids, and more plus over 200 indie games in Eshop, many of which are good games. Golf Story, and Stardew Valley have been selling really well. Add in Mario Odyssey and its pretty much has 2 must have games, and some good exclusives. Games like Splatoon 2 are considered must haves in Japan too. Rest of the year looks good to, and the beginning of 2018.

@pcgameboy: forgot Mario kart! I know steam world dig 2 is multi platform but its wonderful on the switch. I'm pumped for rocket league and skyrim in under 3 weeks, xeno blade December 1st! I swore off consoles after the 360 and ps3(also had a wii) I felt like a sucker for buying all 3. Been Pc gaming for well over 5 years. The switch somehow broke that exception for me.

Hey Nintendo fans, I'm thinking about getting a switch. I was pissed at Nintendo for a while, but I'm over it.

Can someone give an honest opinion on both the new Zelda and Mario games. Basically where both game ranks within each respective series. Thanks!

@Bushido415: I felt the same way about Nintendo for a while, but had faith in the Switch. Both games you mentioned are GOTY contenders in their own right. I put over 90 hours into Zelda BOTW(didnt realize i played it that much). Currently addicted to Mario Odyseey.

My commute to and from work is about 3 hours. It gives me a lot of time to play my Switch. Im still waiting for other titles, but what Nintendo has released has held me over. If you commute and love games, the Switch is a must have. Also, you can bet that Nintendo always releases top quality first party titles. My PS4 and Xbone have not gotten as much love lately as my Switch. You wont regret purchasing it.

@Bushido415: Yeah, they are at least Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64 levels, which is way above where Sunshine and Galaxy stood imo....

They are the "Ocarina" and the "64" of this era for sure, if that tells you anything.

Love having the Switch, playing such great nostalgic titles, alongside my PC and Xbox One S and coming soon X; been so close to getting a PS for the awesome exclusives. I'm rooting for gaming all the way around regardless of the platform.

The SNES Classic also sold 2 million units. Which is as much as the NES Classic sold in total before production was stopped.

Nintendo is doing really well!

People kept saying Nintendo was doomed but they been around since the world started turning and it's gonna keep right on turning right along with it until this little planet rotates off its axis as a result of it's core overheating and explodes into cosmic dust! Can you dig it?
