Super Mario Odyssey Crosses 2 Million Copies Sold After Only 3 Days

Stompin' Goombas, movin' units.

Super Mario Odyssey was hotly anticipated, and it released last Friday to widespread critical acclaim. But it's still surprising just how well the game has sold in its first three days on the market: according to Nintendo, it's already sold around 2 million copies.

The news comes by way of Nintendo's financial earnings report. The numbers on the game are pretty crazy when you take into account the fact that the company has moved 7 million Nintendo Switch units. That means that, in only three days, just under 30% of all Switch users have purchased Super Mario Odyssey.

Now Playing: Super Mario Odyssey Video Review

It's safe to say that Super Mario Odyssey will likely continue to sell well, and Nintendo certainly wants to help move more units. In the earnings report, the company stated, "We will endeavor to further increase the number of consumers who want to purchase Super Mario Odyssey, and eventually we would like the game to be seen as an evergreen title that has longevity in the market beyond this holiday season."

Super Mario Odyssey is chasing the top spot on the Switch sales charts. As revealed earlier today, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild currently stands as the top-selling Switch game, having moved 4.7 million units as of the end of September. Next on the list is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with 4.42 million copies sold.

If you haven't heard already, the new Mario game is pretty awesome. In our 10/10 Super Mario Odyssey review, GameSpot critic Peter Brown wrote, "Odyssey is sustained beyond its major milestones not only through colorful worlds and hidden challenges, but through the sheer joy of controlling Mario, who's never felt more responsive or dynamic in action. Even with everything new that's been introduced, Nintendo's forward-thinking platformer retains the series' classic handcrafted appeal, which is even more impressive when you realize how densely packed each kingdom is."

Both this and Zelda are the joint GOTY’s hands down.

@Prats1993: I would add Persona and Horizon. It's a 4 way tie for me. I just can't decide.

@blood-souls: As someone who's beaten Horizon, I don't think it's GOTY quality. The voice acting is horrible, the story is too bombastic for its own good, the combat isn't really anything to write home about, and it was really hard to immerse myself in its world when I knew jack crap about what was going on. It felt like the third game in a trilogy to me.

@blood-souls: Both Odyssey and BOTW are definitely worthy GOTY contenders. My personal pick would be Persona 5 though. Unfortunately, Persona 5 has sold a little over 1 million copies(which i think will be the reason why it doesn't get GOTY).

If it can maintain that pace for a whole year it will sell 241 million copies. But it probably won't.

@lostn: Unless people have lost their minds and are buying multiple copies it kind of has a hard cap of 7 million possible sales currently.

Hands down, Nintendo nailed it with Zelda and Mario. However, I haven't bought a switch yet, because of the lack of hardware specs and third party support

@garcia_jx.: Again with third party support. Again, it's not third part support, it's third party EXCLUSIVES. There is a HUGE difference. And there's no such thing as third party exclusives anyway, those are considered second party (such as Rare, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac). All that matters are first party and second party anyway. If every console had access to the same games, there'd be no point in choosing which system to own and gaming would ultimately suffer. Having said that, LOL Microsoft and your two games worth having.

@garcia_jx: I think Nintendo is definitely going to shift third party perspective on their console. They will start getting more support as the Switch continues to sell well.

@garcia_jx: I thought Zelda was very tedious, but I know I'm in the minority on that.

@lostn: Yeah i didn't find it tedious at all, had a blast all the way through, and loved finding shrines, and other hidden areas, and puzzles to find chest/seeds/shrines, ect. The world was just so mysterious to me, full of things to do.. But hey its all opinions.

@lostn: nah I also found it a bit repetitive after the first 10 or so hours. Once I unlocked all the towers I realized I was just running around doing shrines which all look the same and aren't really all that hard to complete. I won't say it's bad because it did give me many hours of entertainment but it's not a game I think I will ever return to.

@Devil_wings00: I really miss the traditional dungeons, which were the best part of Zelda for me. Replacing them with 150-odd shrines is just no substitute for the real thing.

Zelda has never felt this repetitive to me. But I guess I as a long time fan wasn't their target audience.

That's because it's the only game worth getting! Zelda was a port, Mario Kart was a port, Splatoon 2 is just Splatoon again, Fire Emblem was a flop, Mario + Rabbids is stupid and for babies, ARMS is boring, Switch is underpowered... And whatever else Switch haters say.

@JustPlainLucas: Don't forget that the Switch is the reason for world hunger and Dragon Ball Super's horrible 5th episode.
