Suicide Squad Star Jared Leto Is Confused About The Different Joker Movies

"There's no ownership there."

While Marvel has a carefully planned schedule of future movies in its cinematic universe, superhero rival DC seems to adopt a more scattershot approach. The Suicide Squad spin-off Gotham City Sirens is apparently now no longer happening, and has instead been replaced by a movie focusing on the Joker and Harley Quinn. To add to the confusion, it has also been reported that the studio is working on a second Joker film--with a different actor--that will explore the character's origins. If this sounds complicated, you're not alone in thinking that. Jared Leto, who played the Joker in Suicide Squad and is expected to play him in the Harley Quinn film, has also expressed his confusion.

In an interview for On Demand Entertainment to promote the launch of Destiny 2, Leto was asked about the different Joker movies in development. "I'm a little confused, too," he admitted. "There are a couple of things happening. I love the Joker. He's a great character and really fun character to play. But it's a big universe and when you play the Joker, there's no ownership there. You have the honor of holding the baton for a little while and then passing it off. There are other films that are in development and I’m excited to see what comes from them."

However, according to a recent story in The Hollywood Reporter, Leto was "was caught off guard by the plans." The site states that he subsequently informed his agents that he wasn't happy about DC planning to have "multiple Jokers."

The Joker/Harley Quinn movie was announced last month. According to The Tracking Board, it will be "criminal love story" that reunites Leto and his Suicide Squad co-star Margot Robbie. The origin movie, meanwhile, will potentially be produced by legendary director Martin Scorsese. Last week, it was reported that the studio is keen to cast Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role.

In related news, it has been reported that Suicide Squad 2 now has a director. Gavin O'Connor will helm the supervillain team-up sequel, which is expected to start shooting next year.

The best way to fix this is make a Joker origin movie. Jared Leto plays Robin and the real Joker converts him to Suicide Squad Joker.

Rather than another movie that focuses on the Joker in some form, why not put the spotlight on someone else from Batman's rogues gallery?

How about a Bane or Mr. Freeze Origin movie? Maybe someone else?

I get that the Joker is iconic and one of the biggest villains in comics, but when you have a rich rouge gallery like Batman has, do we need yet more Joker? This is almost as bad as Batman getting shoved into everything because DC thinks that a project will fail if Batman does not show up at some point.

And I have to admit, I'm confused. How would a Joker Origin story work anyway when he does not have a single concrete origin story? It differs from story to story and across the various forms of media. Why should I care about Joker's Origin anyway? I could get behind a Mr. Freeze movie because his Origin is pretty much set in stone since The Animated Series. It would be an interesting movie to watch, especially since Batman and Robin gave him a middle finger.

But the Joker? He's a crazy monster with an insane bodycount. Why would I care about how he became the Joker?

Leto played a good Suicide Squad Joker .. but there wasn't enough of him in the film ... hopefully in the 2nd film he gets a lot more screen time - Great Actor is Leto .. a shame to not give him the screen time !

Jared's confused. I'm confused. The fanbase is confused. Hell, I think even DC themselves are confused. No one knows what's happening with this franchise anymore. This is not the way to do it.

I'm confused as to why they made the character a gangster crack head to begin with.

Considering I thought Suicide squad was awful and both Jared Leto and Margot Robbie were both boring to watch and missed the point of the two characters I'm not going to watch this Joker N' Harley film, the Origin film to a character who shouldn't have an origin or Suicide Squad 2.

For now the only good film DCU has produced is Wonder Woman because they didn't make her a dark brooding character like Batman. Batman V Superman? More like Batman V Batman Lite.

I'm still confused about Leto's performance as the Joker and how it made it off the cutting floor.

I actually just watched this on Netflix for the first time last night & didn’t think it was that bad.. basically what I expected - mediocre, stupid, yet entertaining.

I don’t understand all the hate for Jared Leto either.. it was the perfect fit for Suicide Squad & their whole take on it. A more serious, traditional Joker wouldn’t have worked at all. So if anything you should hate the movie as a whole, not just their version of Joker (which I thought was refreshing & the most entertaining 1 yet)

They should just scratch Joker Origin IMO.

@tingtong: I hated everything about SS. They took what could've been a great movie and just made mindless crap.

Between Suicide Squad 2, Joker Origin, and Harley and Joker, I'd be surprised if ANY of those actually get made.

It's not that he was not up to the task. He just got saddled with a bad concept and terrible writing because Warner Bros decided to reinvent the wheel. He could probably do a more "traditional" Joker just fine, if he had the chance.

This guy was the worst joker ever, he should just give up the role and take a seat.

He is not alone....

Wake me up when DC FINALLY learn how to make movies past Nolan's Batman....

They will never catch up to Marvel at this rate, considering they STILL need to create a cinematic universe, and then they need to not rush it....

Superman > Batman vs. Superman feat. WW > Suicide Squad > Justice League is not a cinematic universe, it's a clusterfuck of movies without any thought put between them. Throw they all on the garbage where they belong and start an universe from scratch, do it right this time. I don't even need a check for making you billions if you follow this tip, just do it....

This is a let down for the fans since we have to reportrate the joker in DiCaprio now. They are not going to do jokers with different actors, they just droped Leto with that. The movie in which Robbie and Leto will star has already 75% of the shots from the cuts made in suicide squad. Thats the only reason why Leto is still on the role. After that guys just get used to DiCaprio.

Would have rather a Sirens movie than this joker Harley love thing. It feels weird seeing all these young goth kids walking around with joker Harley tatts and accessories when I remember all the years of domestic abuse between them.

Worst Joker says there shouldn't be multiple jokers. The kid on Gotham was a better Joker than you Leto. Go take your weird Marilyn Manson mixed with a Juggalo Joker and disappear.

@catsimboy: The kid on Gotham did an amazing job in my opinion. Really got that ledger vibe off him. Maybe a bit less orchestrated with his own plans, but that's easily explained by the age difference in those characters.

Must admit that does sound confusing. I hope they give Jared Leto a proper chance to portray the Joker. I think a movie with Harley Quinn and Joker would be a fitting setting for him to prove how good he actually was at that role.

Face it, dude. Nobody liked your Joker. At least Robbie proved she CAN nail Harley when she really wanted to, but I blame the director for not utilizing her correctly.

As for everything else...Warner Bros. just sucks. They're making movies as they always have. Marvel shot Iron Man in the same offices where they draw the comics. That goes to show how much closer to their chest Marvel keeps their stories.
