Street Fighter 5 Aims to Appeal to "Newer, Younger" Audience With "Accessible" Gameplay

"Previous Street Fighter games could feel a bit prohibitive."

Capcom is hopeful that upcoming fighting game Street Fight V can draw in a "newer, younger" audience and make the franchise overall "approachable and accessible again." That's according Capcom brand manager Brian Ayers, who talked more about the company's aspirations for the game in a new interview.

No Caption Provided

"The ambitions with Street Fighter V were to make the game approachable and accessible again, but also to make everything with the characters feel a lot more individual and bring out more chances for people to find the right competitor that suits them," he told MCV.

Ayers added: "We really hope that Street Fighter V can bring in a newer, younger audience."

Capcom is also hoping Street Fighter V can appeal to the competitive gaming crowd, too.

“Perhaps more of an esports audience, as well," he said. "Street Fighter is actually one of the first esports titles out there, but it's relatively underground compared to the likes of Dota 2 and League of Legends."

Capcom is taking a different approach to Street Fighter V's release model and business plan. There won't be a Super Street Fighter V or Ultra Street Fighter V made available down the road--and this, too, should help the core game appeal to a wider base from the onset.

"It will just be that core release, which will hopefully make it more accessible so people aren't questioning which version they have to buy," Ayers said. "Previous Street Fighter games could feel a bit prohibitive, so it's very much at the forefront of our minds to make Street Fighter V more approachable and accessible. Not just the game, but the business model, too."

Be sure to read the full MCV interview for more on Street Fighter V.

Street Fighter V will launch in February 2016 across PlayStation 4 and PC. The game's second beta recently concluded, and, like the first one, it did not go so well.

So its going to be dumbed down and ruined. Oh well. Street Fighter was never that great anyway. I could usually win just by jumping around and hitting the buttons fast.

@externalpower43: Is it even possible to dumb down a fighting game? I mean seriously; it isn't like this genre has much complexity to begin with.

@arkhamcreed78: I think a lot of new players or returning ones that never really delved into the game mechanics get frustrated and quit when the can't "win" and "do all the cool stuff." Maybe there isn't much to fighting games but there is a divide the develops between potential new customers when they can't deal with better players who know all the jargon, frame traps, zoning, bnb combos, plinking, buffering special canceling etc. If Capcom can not scare off the people who like that stuff and get new players the only stand to benefit.

I can't help but feel Capcom have effectively been nailing the coffin shut by trying so hard to make SF relevant again.

@KamikazeDonut: I meant the popularity of the series doesn't seem comparable to what it used to be. It used to be one of the most talked about games among many of my friends, now it really seems like Capcom are trying to squeeze it for all it's worth. (though that could be said for many of their older franchises in recent years)

@Kunakai: Just seems like they are trying to grow their fanbase to me. A lot of casuals seem to dislike the high skill bar to entry. Lowering it risks losing the people who like the more complicated and technical aspects of the game.

I'm sure any business would love the attention Street Fighter once had but I don't think Capcom is being unrealistic in simply trying get whoever they can to play. When fighting game were big, it was cause they were new-ish and a lot of people were just mashing buttons and enjoying what was at the time instant gratification. They can't really surprised those kinds of people again. They've moved on and probably look down on fighting games. What else can fighting game developers do?

And I wish more people were into fighting games for the high level play. It's awesome.

@Kunakai:

Maybe among your friends it's not as popular, but with the release of SF4 (and the succeeding versions) the popularity of the franchise soared and brought a fighting game revival. SF is still played consistently by many players around the world for 7 years and tournaments are hosted almost weekly on Twitch. At EVO this year, SF was the biggest tournament with over 200+ entrants (largest amount ever) and garnered some of the highest total and unique views in streaming history.

If you want to make it accessible, give up on half-circle motions to execute attacks.

"characters feel a lot more individual"

I'm still trying to figure out why they made a gender-swap of Blanka. Oh...wait sex sells I forgot.

Anyways I really wonder what they mean by more accessible. Is it going to be another casual fest? I don't even play that competitively but I hate hand holding or simplified games.

@Richardthe3rd: Really? That lightning powers don't strike an odd chord with you seeing as that was Blanka's thing? Both from Brazil and they both use lightning as their power. The only difference being that she is bland and boring with sex appeal. I want my weird monkey guy back but oh well they'll appeal to the casuals with characters like her.

Funny thing is I told myself during SF4's era they couldn't make someone worse than C-Viper. I shouldn't have said that to myself. -.-

@UnbornCorpser: Did you ever consider that maybe lightning powers come from Brazil? Maybe everyone out there can use them. That doesn't make them all Blanka clones. And if a person really wanted to pick at it, Dee Jay's powers are sort of lightning, so are other characters.

Anyway, not all characters have been revealed yet. Even after they show them all off, there's going to be a lot more added to the game as time goes on. I'm sure we'll be seeing all of the classic characters at some point.

@Fenixx: I think you are reading too much into that Crapcom's story in Street Fighter is laughable. Besides that's not exactly something anyone in the SF canon could just start doing. Has there been another Brazil fighter besides Blanka and this new chick? And if so did they use electric powers as well?

Dee Jay didn't focus on that power though and honestly I don't see that being canon anyways. Seems more like an effect they just threw on him to make his moves more flashy.

They are near the end of the characters announced I know that much and of course they will add more vets later on. People will get those with either the in-game or real life currency. Characters as bland as her needed to be on the main roster otherwise why bother if you could have Blanka?

Remember when CAPCOM said the exact same thing for Resident Evil 6? And it turned out to be one of the saddest examples of corporate greed which resulted in an extremely abominable product that was like a death blow to the series and ended up losing most of its loyal fans.

It's nice to see that they're doing this. I loved SF4 and played it right from it's initial launch all the way through the AE version, but it was an extremely technical game. For the most part, I could hold my own against a skilled player, but the thing preventing me from being up at that level was the amount of technical skill required. I wasn't going to sink hundreds of hours into studying frame data and practicing different match-ups and whatever else. I got better things to do with my time. It's even worse for more amateur people since they're just playing for a good time and they get picked apart without even a chance.

I don't think a complete amateur should be able to compete against a skilled player but I do believe there should at least be a possibility that they could win. So by making it easier and more user friendly, it will allow people to learn the game better and possibly quicker, allowing for some form of competition even from a person just getting into things.

@captenziltoid: No amateur is ever going to beat a pro. Capcom isn't removing skill based gameplay they're just easing up the barrier of entry so that players can spend more time learning fundamentals.

@captenziltoid: So basically you're saying that because a person is good at a game, it makes them god and nobody can touch them. That was the exact problem with a lot of players in SF4. I went against a bunch of way more skilled people then myself and they would be playing around in the match and thinking it was just a walk in the park. Then when I beat them, they weren't very happy anymore and would want a rematch to try and get revenge.

These games should be fair competition. Of course the person that practices for hundreds of hours is going to be better and have the advantage over someone that just started playing, but that shouldn't mean it's an automatic win. In my opinion, if a player can consistently perform special moves and know how and when to block or attack, they should be able to at least stand a chance in the fight. It should not be a mandatory requirement that a person can do 1 frame links and all of the other extremely technical things.

This is the thing that they're changing with SF5. It's easier to learn, which benefits everyone. A lot of people quit playing SF4 because it was too complicated to be decent at it. If the game is more user friendly, that means more people are playing and it's more competition for everyone. I don't know about you but I don't really enjoy playing against the same person multiple times.

@Fenixx: You're mistaken. People played the game for years justifying another upgrade with more characters just a year ago. It was STILL selling. Maybe non-fighting game players stopped playing but not the majority.
Now, look at their last offering, SFxT. It was nothing but simplified gameplay. The Tekken and Street Fighter name sold it. They made one upgrade and added characters and did that make anyone want to play it? Nope. They were even offering a car and cash bonuses to get people playing. They literally couldn't pay most to keep playing the simplified pos.
Capcom can look at their own history and see that this philosophy doesn't apply to fighting games but they are trying really hard to force it and the only people that seem to like the idea are those that couldn't play it on pad or stick which is pretty ridiculous since the system is so lenient you can literally mash special moves out.
How about SF2:HDRemix? It got a few more players interested because it was a new release. Then what happened? Even those players went back to a 20 year old game because the simplified version was an abomination. Even the players that were introduced to SF2 with that game preferred the more serious and skillful version.

SF is like the martial arts of fighting games. You master skills and techniques that you take into combat. People that enjoy fighting games aren't looking to mash out wins.

Capcom just didn't realize why people preferred Street Fighter over other fighting games. All that was needed was for Sony to advertise it like MK gets advertised. SF usually sold on name recognition and quality. The Sony marketing machine would have made it sell out. It's doubtful it will, now. We all know it's a beginner game, now. They should have made a new series if they wanted to try it out. They should have learned from SFxT. That was a game guaranteed to succeed and they failed to deliver the goods and here we are again.

@captenziltoid: I totally agree with what you're saying. I like the Street Fighter games because they are more about skill and not just button mashing. When you beat someone, you feel more of an accomplishment. But the games definitely aren't the most noob friendly. I tried to get my nephews to play SF4 a few years back and they struggled with it. And I've lost track of how many times I've encountered someone online that would be trying to get out a fireball but would fail over and over.

While I enjoy the more skill based gameplay, I'm also looking forward to seeing how they change the game and make it more accessible for everyone, not just people that play fighting games. I've enjoyed what I've seen of the gameplay on YouTube. They've gotten rid of the focus stuff which I think is a great idea. They've sort of combined the super and ultra combos so now you only need to manage one and not two. And I think I heard them talking about the timing for linking being a bit looser. All of those changes make the game more accessible but it in no way makes it any less skill based. I think the game looks great so far but I know not everyone is going to be happy with it.
