Star Wars Actor Was Fired From "Sh*tty" Video Game

Star Wars star Oscar Isaac lost his spot doing voiceover work for Dante's Inferno.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens this week, and with it comes the respective Disney Infinity play set. Oscar Isaac, who's starring in the new movie as X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron, provided his voice to Disney's toys-to-life game. But it wasn't the first time he's done voiceover work for a game.

No Caption Provided

Although he never appeared in the finished product, Isaac claims in an interview with Birth.Movies.Death that he had been "fired" from work on Dante's Inferno, which was developed by Visceral Games and published by EA.

Isaac said he thinks he was dismissed because "they just thought I was bad." However, the Force Awakens star doesn't seem too beat up about it.

"It was such a shitty game, though," said Isaac.

When the interviewer proclaimed that he had "dodged a bullet," the actor said "it was a Force dodge."

Dante's Inferno received a 6.5 from GameSpot in a review that said the game falls short of its impressive beginning and there's little reason to play beyond it.

EA handles development on all Star Wars games now, excluding a select few that can be found on mobile. The company released Star Wars Battlefront this year and has plans for sequels. Meanwhile, a Star Wars game by Visceral is currently in development.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens releases on December 18. It was recently announced that the movie would be accompanied by a trailer for the upcoming Star Trek Beyond. And Star Wars creator George Lucas "really liked" the new Star Wars film and says fans are going to love it.

This guy gets a role as a pilot and all of a sudden someone cares what he has to say? Not me. I'd by DI2 if it ever came out.

Still better than Star Wars Battlefront, and on it's own pretty decent. The movie about the game was awesome though, I guess I can see some sort of similarities here then.

Sounds like he is sore about it to me.

The game was good, not great but not shitty either. Doesn't speak well to this guy's character, especially as they talk about doing work on a Disney game

DI was an ok game at best. Wasn't terrible, but not a game I would want to play again. I'd rather that developer have made another Dead Space instead.

@lostn: Protip they did. Dante's Inferno came out right before they released Dead Space 2. 11 months.

@ughz: Yes and if they skipped DI and made DS2 during that time, we'd have DS3 earlier, and with some left over time to make DS4, or spend extra time and make DS3 better than it was.

Dante's Inferno isn't a 10/10. I didn't even give it that score when I reviewed it.

Regardless, it was a better game than any of the God of War games. Visceral, as they always do, did a knock-out job at art and sound design. All the circles of hell were great and had their own unique challenges. The QTEs had a pattern and they made sense and they were predictable, unlike the random-as-**** QTE storm that was any given God of War game, especially 2 and 3. It had a far better story and was handled with more sincerity than God of War. The combat and upgrade system of unholy versus holy was entirely logical and appropriate and fit with the themes of the game. Much more fitting than "Smash literally everything and it will give you orbs".

It suffered because it came out after God of War, literally 5 weeks before God of War 3, and the fickle console audience does not tolerate games that are similar. Darksiders and Bayonetta and LoS didn't sell well, either.

The only legitimate complaint you can level against Dante's Inferno is that there were way too many F'ing aborted babies all the time. And there was literally one area where you had to climb up the flesh-walls in this tiny little shaft where the camera angle was terrible and made it really hard to see the enemies trying to kill you.

Well okay and Satan was the easiest boss in the game, unless you're awful at hack and slash.

It was one out of my pile of games that I actually completed last generation. I enjoyed it a lot, and I was recently looking to buy it again for another run at condemning souls with the scythe.

Dante's Inferno fell short because it felt like some of the circles of hell were seriously cut short and they was I didn't mind the game I just felt I was robbed of paying full price for a game that was cut but then again I've had other games do that to me anyway so.....

I'm surprised that there is no mention of some singer saying that he was asked to promote Battlefront and calling that game shitty. Gamespot loves to do references like that.

@louixiii: But they love to rehash old articles and this is a perfect combo, with one person from a Star Wars movie saying "game is shitty" when another person was previously recorded saying "Star wars game is shitty". The similarities begs to be pointed out.

@louixiii: But in every recent Star Wars article they've mentioned Battlefront and how one singer called it a shitty game and now we have someone else with a Star Wars connection who calls another game shitty. We've gone from one person calling a Star Wars game shitty, to having the same response from a Star Wars actor, albeit calling a different game shitty. The important thing is that both have connections to Star Wars and both people call a game shitty. That's a tenuous connection, but I've seen worse :P.

@louixiii: Alright, as soon as I get back from it I'll let you know, but prepare for some OMFG with extra awesome sauce.

I just saw that it's got 83 on Metacritic based on 36 reviews, so that's something.

Okay, I'm back. I was right about both the OMFG and awesome sauce parts (the Force made me foresee it). Damn, it was good! I would even call it the best Star Wars movie ever, even better than the Holiday Special I watched on youtube for the first time a while ago :P. It also contained enough spoiler material to set the whole internet on fire. I'm glad I've watched now, the spoilers can't hurt me now. Stay away from all Star Wars movie articles, especially the comment sections. Otherwise, you'll hear yourself doing an imitation of Darth Vader's or Luke's "Noooooo!".

I'm definitely staying away from all review articles and comment sections. I have to wait until Sunday. I'm holding out to take my boys with me so we can all enjoy the force together but MAN...I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!

Dantes Inferno was most certainly not a sh*tty game. Upitty pr*ck. I had never played any of the God of War games until they released remaster on PS4, and I had way more fun with Dantes Inferno. I didn't even want to finish God of War.

Whoever wrote GS review for Dante's Inferno evidently didn't play it because the intro was sure as **** not "impressive." It was strong, but the worst combat sequence in the entire game was in the beginning when you had to pointlessly fight whatever infidels the crusade was slaying that day, who were all significantly more powerful than you were despite losing their entire city.

I'm glad we got to rehash this so people can talk about how the game was crap. I pine to see more comments about how one of the best studios in the industry turned out this "bad" game.

Pretty sure most of them sucked too badly to finish it so they're butthurt.

And who gives a shit what Oscar Isaacs thinks about games? Can we stop with the non-gaming news? Breaking Benjamin rightfully describing how Battlefront blows is one thing. Oscar no-name Isaacs calling a 5 year old game "shitty" in apropos of nothing is another.

@ughz: Dude has been in at least movies in the past year, including some with awards potential. Just because you don't know who he is doesn't make him a no-name. Also, it's minor trivia for a game. If the stupid Battlefront thing was news-worthy, then so is this.

@iabstract: Inside Llewyn Davis was a stellar movie, he did amazing in that one and it got high praise. However, he does sound a little hurt, why even bring this up years later unless he's still upset about it? The game was pretty underrated and overshadowed by GOW but was a damn solid game with awesome back drops and had some smooth combat.

Dante's Inferno was a pretty good game, very underrated. I thought the game played smoothly and the backdrops and environments were pretty mind blowing at the time.

Isaacs is a good actor, look forward to see what all he can do but don't call Dante's a shitty game.

@ughz:

It was started by God of War, where you are swinging your weapon in a circular fashion around you.

God of War
Dante's Inferno
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

I know some other games did it, but those are the ones that come to mind.

@skyhighgam3r: Dante's Inferno doesn't have circular combat. The majority of combat arenas are very flat and almost 2 dimensional. Yes, swinging your scythe in a circle is a thing that can be done but it's not the best way to win. It has unholy and holy powers for a reason, which are recharged easily and actually useful. Unlike God of War, where you literally had to spam the circle spin because it was the only reliable way to use the blades, and your magic was ancillary.

And God of War didn't start anything. It worsened the QTE trend, is all.

I think you misunderstand my analysis of Dante Inferno's combat if you think that point doesn't support what I said lol.

And yeah, god of war started a short lived trend of similar combat styles. Look at almost any third person action combat game around that era and you will see that it's incredibly prevalent.

I can't agree more though that they shat all over the QTE thing though... after all that work Shenmue did to make it awesome too...

@skyhighgam3r: In order to have circular combat, the primary method of being able to kill anything needs to be the circle attack. Meaning the arenas need to be wide open where enemies can actually surround you.

There isn't a single area in the entire game of Dante's Inferno after the beginning where enemies actually surround you 360 degrees, unless you are just bad and you let them. The only game that actually has that same combat is Lords of Shadow 1, and to a lesser extent 2.
