As of yet it is unclear if the game will also be available in other territories at the same time.
Star Fox 64 was originally released in 1997 and received widespread critical acclaim. In GameSpot's original review it was called "an instant classic."
In April 2007 the game was re-released on the Wii Virtual Console and, although it was described as "a simplistic game by today's standards" critic Alex Navarro said "the fun inherent to the game's design has withstood the test of time and still offers up some thrills."
Star Fox 64 was also remade for the Nintendo 3DS, and earned a 7.5/10 in GameSpot's review.
"Star Fox 64 stands the test of time," said Carolyn Petit. "Whether you're new to this space-faring adventure or just eager to take that old Arwing for another spin, you won't be disappointed."
The next game in the series, Star Fox Zero, is set to launch on April 21 for Wii U. It is developed by Platinum Games, the studio behind acclaimed action games including Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and The Wonderful 101.
Star Fox Zero will be bundled with Star Fox Guard (formerly Miyamoto's Project Guard), a standalone game starring Slippy Toad's uncle, named Grippy. For more on the Star Fox Zero, check out GameSpot's new preview,"Have Star Fox Zero's Controls Improved?"
