Star Citizen Developer Wants to Reinvent the FPS

Star Citizen, that ludicrously successful crowd-funded project, isn't just a space flight simulator. The developer, Roberts Space Industries is also creating a first-person shooter to accompany the space combat segments. In a new developer blog post, the team outlined some of its key changes to the FPS formula to improve "realism."

Standard FPS games, the post says only have two combat stances. One holds the player avatar's gun near the shoulder at all times while the other simulates careful aiming down the sights of the gun. Roberts says this isn't realistic and instead proposes a three stance system to improve balance.

The HUD in lowered stance.
The HUD in lowered stance.

With the new system, players will have to manage a gun in a lowered position, in a ready position, and in an "aim down sights" position. The addition of a third stance allows for a clearer distinction between players that have a gun ready to fire at a moment's notice (as they are in the typical first-person shooter), and those that have their gun at ease to making moving around an area easier. This more accurately simulates real combat stances and will force players to be much slower and more careful when engaging in combat. That sounds complicated, but Roberts says that most of this system will be handled automatically.

"Sprinting or using contextual navigation initiates the Lowered stance," the post says. "Moving slowly and deliberately keeps your weapon in the Ready stance. When in the Lowered stance (entered by sprinting or using contextual navigation), pressing the Fire button will bring you back into the Ready stance. When in the Ready stance, pressing the Aim button brings you into the Aim Down Sight stance. Releasing the held button returns the weapon to the Ready stance."

Roberts is also adding a new system for breathing and stamina to help reinforce a system of stat trade-offs between different kinds of weapons and armor. Heavier gear will drain players of stamina more, causing them to breath more heavily which, in turn, makes their aim more erratic. Players, much like real soldiers, will have to be careful so that they don't end up tiring their avatars. For the best aim, they'll also need to fire at the tops and bottoms of breaths to ensure that the chest isn't moving when they're shooting.

Roberts says that this will provide more balance and a refocused approach to shooting in games. "This is intended to slow the pace of combat, so that it feels more tactical and reinforces our intention that survival takes consideration, rather than random firing."

These features will be included along with the introduction of the FPS module code-named "Star Marine." There is no concrete date for Star Marine.

In any case, Star Citizen has raised more than $77 million, making it by far the most successful crowdfunding project of any kind to-date.

firstly they need to higher the gun where the pilot is holding it.

Then we can talk.

Hope for the best but with all the dissapointments and the fail hypes nowadays it becomes very hard to be enthusiastic for a game or to believe that some developer will change the industry to what it was 20 years ago.

Hope for the best but the light is lost.

Getting a serious "biting off more than you can chew" vibe from some of the more recent Star Citizen goals. Here's hoping they pull it off.

@Pawfalcon: I felt the same, but the folks I've talked to who are actually playing Star Citizen right now have felt differently, and believe that Roberts, et al are on-track to delivering on at least most of their promises.

Let me guess, they need another 20 millions to add that feature. By then, they will make up another feature that will require more money.

I generally prefer slower combat since faster mechanics tend to cross the line into button mashing, but I gotta say, I have played a shooter with similar mechanics and it didn't play well at all.

@Barighm: These ideas are so broad that you can't possibly have a clue how it handles.
ArmA has some of these concepts, but if you aren't in it for the long haul with that game all of the details of the on foot mechancis tend to feel crummy, if you aren't used to them. But mechanics like this, and the ballistics and stuff are also what make that game so awesome for folks like me.

But there are other games with the same concepts that nail the rest and beyond that it's just personal taste.
You could easily add these concepts to Call of Duty and it would still feel silky smooth and responsive and nice like Call of Duty.

@mordeaniis@Barighm: I agree that the devil's in the details, and I also agree that less forgiving/fluid movement and aiming mechanics can be a lot of fun, but I also think a lot depends on context. Such concepts are almost essential in hardcore tactical shooters like Arma or Insurgency, but if you're aiming for something like Call of Duty or Unreal Tournament, such mechanics are detrimental.

However, I don't think Star Citizen should aim to be like any of the above. Arma and its ilk may be tactical and deliberate, but they're also terribly unforgiving, thanks to their realistic damage mechanics, and it's possible (but unlikely, IMHO) that Arma-style aiming/moving won't work well without Arma-style one-shot kills.

@Smosh150@Barighm: The Arma games and Insurgency have very similar aim/move mechanics. In fact, I believe Arma III has a system that exactly matches what is described.

@PutU2REM@Smosh150@Barighm: Not so much, I own both of those games and they are wildly different in the movement/aim mechanics(Insurgency is almost just like BF3/4 just with a more punishing system and a few realistic features, as well as the game modes). However you are correct in ARMA having exactly what is described, many are saying below that it is just like any FPS with the lowered stance being like sprint, but to me it sounds like the actual lowered stance in the ARMA/OFP games.

This mechanic is barely, if even, out of prototype phase. We have no idea what the end result will be like.

@thermalmotion: You are not alone... Their current "tech demos" have not been able to attract more than 1% of their supposed number of backers to play it, or to give it a single try. They have a leaderboard from where you can figure out that, even that not the real objective of such "spreadsheet"...

Here: << LINK REMOVED >>

The most "popular" multiplayer mode, after AC 1.1.1 release, is not going far of just 1k users so far, who played for more than a few seconds since its release 3/4 days ago. The majority of this microscopic number did not pass from 10 minutes. And the rest, it's easy to infer that are the most excited backers who play the game using more than one account with different ships associated to them, meaning that many "users" are from one single individual.

If you filter to see the entire life cycle of previous patches, they barely pass from 13k-20k users (much less individuals if you understand what I just explained above).

Majority of the supposed population (that they say to have, not necessarily have) even bought alpha access to play it earlier, separated from the package, much further after the "game" available... but all them have been refusing to give it a SINGLE try.

So, by these stats, a lot analysis (even speculation) can be made... But the most important FACT is, that you can have an idea of how "good" it is for their own backers.

If that was really good, as some people try to claim, definitely more people would play it, or would give it, at least, a single try, even that just to check how it performs in multiplayer in their rig/broadband.

And Roberts intention with such releases were to keep his backers playing the game and busy "having fun" while waiting for a long time. As you can see, he has been failing terribly on this announced objective. But one can argue that it's just another speech of bs. If he really wanted to more people "having fun", he wouldn't create schemes of cash grabbing associated with these earlier modules, that actually can limit the level of players having fun, or even testing. Maybe these people back later, but I highly doubt that after so long waiting, and clearly have been treated as second-class citizens because do not spend more real dollars, they will look to all that they release with forgiving eyes and good taste in their mouth, just as the few 1k-5k whales that spend their days praising CIG in their forums.

He's a 16 year old that got his money refunded by the Star Citizen devs because he was a fucking psychopath on the forums who went by the namejcrg99. He bought his way BACK into the game and now goes by the name MrGaribaldi and actively plays Star Citizen's multiplayer.

@mestremun@thermalmotion: First of all..." it's easy to infer that are the most excited backers who play the game using more than one account with different ships associated to them, meaning that many "users" are from one single individual." HOW? How did you infer this? There's NO reason for them to make multiple accounts You can buy multiple ships, or ALL ships, on one account. It even looks better when you do because they all sit in your hanger next to each other. Looks fancy.

Second, LOL. It's an alpha. A VERY limited alpha. It was cheaper before, but now I think the minimum to get is 150 dollars or so. When you have to pay real money to get into an alpha, the numbers are gonna be really low. As far backers who do have access but don't play....there's a lot of thinks to consider. Reason #1 would be time. There's also other, complete games to play. Then there's the "Black screen" issue that stops people from playing lately, which could explain a lot of those people that play for only 5 minutes.

Yes. In the mindset of the major contributors and die-hard fans all that exists are reasons to create and buy packages and ships in multiple accounts. This is so true, that Roberts even created a future "slot" mechanic to deal with that, which was source of a long post with explanations about that in the past. People are totally obsessed to make marketing for the game, to promote the game as successful and as more that number raises, more people could see to that, presume that as "a success", relying more to give their money to the project earlier, or following "the trend".

No... This is not "lately". This is ever. People have not been playing it, regardless signing to it, since ever.

@mestremun@Kougeru@mestremun: dude i'll give you my own experience with the game and maybe you will glean some perspective from it

ok i have not backed the game a buddy of mine bought an r9 290x and guess what 3 games came with it, one being SC. so i went to visit my buddy (he lives 250 kms away so i don't see him often ) so i asked how is SC he said they threw us a bone a pretty one but a bone so i said let me have a look.

k so i played it for about 10 mins why you ask well

1) i don't like playing space sim shooters with a m/kb i like flight sticks, good ones with P/R/Y all on the stick my buddy does not have this.

2) he did have a pro-controller, but you can't set up any of the analogues/buttons different to what is there as default. so there was no separate "roll" control on the right stick or what ever you want, the 3 controls to be mapped to. so i didn't have full control of ship movement. this is not something i can just get use to.

3) it will be available, to re assign buttons, at launch so why get use to something that is going to change later. if you play FPS games with x inverted and then play a game were it is not it really mess you up why put your self through that.

4) aside from how good the ship handled in spite of my gripes the game so far looks a feels amazing, but it is as you said only playable to the die hard supporters. the rest of us will wait until we can play it how we are most comfortable

now maybe you can stop what your doing, a game is coming and your insanity will not stop it. i now wonder if you are also that guy, who goes around saying half life 3 is never coming. well if you are you will have better luck convincing people of that as of right now no one thinks HL3 is on the way

@suppaphly42@mestremun@Kougeru@mestremun: I see. Huge majorities signed for the alpha very later, but does not feel comfortable to play it because hate mouse/keyboard, live 250km away from their friends, regardless the game looking and feeling amazing.

How I hadn't think this possibility. My bad. Thank you to clarify. Certainly the huge majority is not playing this absolute amazing game, just because the couch.

LOL

P.S.: Love when die-hard fans, pretend to do not be die-hard fans and build these stories to try to justify things to make everything to appear better than it is... 10/10 for the imagination... I almost though that you are a legit... until I noticed your username, as well as your try to silence me, asking me to "stop" or caling me "insane"... you should know that this pretty much reveals you as the usual die-hard fans and their PR obsession to silence everyone... don't be mad... just an advice so you can do that better next time, ok?

@mestremun@suppaphly42@mestremun@Kougeru: that is a special kinda thinking you have there. you see most people who see a list of numbered points, think maybe those are the points of interest not the beginning part which just sets the stage.

i never said couch anything. flight sticks can be used at a desk just as easily as the couch all i said was i don't like m/kb. also i'm not unique in that regard. psst thats why they make flight sticks, for games like this.

also just because i said what you are doing is insane does not make you insane by default. if that is how you took it then that is on you

next so you dismiss all my points about the lack of controls re-binding as it couldn't possibly be that. noooo my own personal story of how i got to play the game, is what i'm trying to impress upon you, as if it is what all the people who are not playing the game experienced. i'm sorry but not having control over the controls is a real thing and i can imagine lots of people are bothered by it

here is another one that might make people not want to play it the arena is tiny way too small it feels very cramped.

now you may call me a "die hard fan" which is bollix. i have not backed it and only played it for 10 mins. also how many times have you and i crossed paths maybe 5 times in all the SC articles yet you seem to think you know all about me.

calling everyone who supports this game an indoctrinated cult follower is a very odd way to think. so i would surmise that you must think all fanboys of every type are indoctrinated cult followers of their perspective thing

oh and one last thing that guy who spent over $20,000 on SC ships he said "i have to have them all". sounds like OCD to me but to each their own. when he was asked if he wanted to play the game with Chris Roberts he said "no i have better things to do"

i can understand, why play a tiny piddle bit of the game. there is nothing there yet, its a bone that was thrown. anyway this guy who by and large is the most die hard fan and even he does not want to play it

Hey! Don't be mad with our hero, just to try to make a point...

Like Gamespot, you misunderstood him. In fact what he meant to say was that "Chris Roberts would have better things to do", not that "he has better things to do"... a very rude thing for a fan to say, right? Sometimes you people are unable to figure out simple logic. The guy was there, making an interview to talk about his attitude and to PR the game, and you assume that he would say something like that?

Pretty obvious what he actually tried to say... that he wouldn't like to use the time of the god, because presumed that CR has better things to do with his time.

That guy deserves a statue, not to be called as having OCD.

Don't forget to build some stone pokemons in side of his statute.

:)-

We all love him and expect that he continues to spend many more thousands of dollars so we have our absolute ultimate game... well... maybe not us... our grandchildren... but we have to think in the future generations right? Let's just not be selfish and wish this game only for us.

@mestremun@thermalmotion: It isn't a game yet. Alphas usually don't have huge numbers if it's a true alpha. These people are essentially testing prototyped systems within a larger game. So it shouldn't be much of a surprise, considering how little of what was proposed is in the game yet (because, surprise, games take a while to make, or even get to the point where the mechanics are ready and just need additional polish and content to go along with it).
Backers were just that. Are you some kind of sore ass backer who didn't understand how investing in a future product would work? None of the backers were buying a game, they were funding development. We're still well within that development phase so expecting it to just be a full ass game is just silly.

@mordeaniis@mestremun@thermalmotion: Actually "Alphas" usually don't have huge numbers that sign to it. But the huge majority who sign to play in the earlier phases, they actually play it.

Star Citizen case is different... people has been signing to play the alpha (apparently, if you want to believe in their main counter) and basically do not play it.

Some additional reason exists here, that is preventing them to play the game. One that I am not surprised that some people will try to deny, or only will try to find "good" reasons for people do not play it now. I am not so optimist... cof cof... blind, or even ignore the consequences of people not playing anything for so long.

"None of the backers were buying a game, they were funding development."

This is more like a mindset of people who pledged in the very beginning, when the game was not yet a guarantee of "funded". Highly doubt that would be the mindset of a majority who came later, bought the alpha access separated from the package that just gave bet access, by the way.

It will certainly change, it is just one of those things that really doesn't take priority until you actually use it for something important(Like the FPS module).

@ethario: fun >= realism Dependent on the person

Though if this is considered as realism that is pretty funny. It just has elements which are found in less arcade like games(not to say the fps portion is realistic nor arcade like itself, which it is).
