Spot On: System Wars 2008

GameSpot asks industry illuminati to predict whether the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or Wii will emerge as the holiday victor, and which will go on to be the ultimate winner in this generation of the console race.

The latest next-gen console battle is well under way. The Xbox 360 was the first to launch on November 22, 2005, in the US, followed by the PlayStation 3 on November 17, 2006, and the Wii on November 19, 2006. However, in Europe, things were turned a little on their head, with the Xbox 360 launching on December 2, 2005, followed by the Wii on December 8, 2006, and the fashionably late PlayStation 3 on March 23, 2007.

The previous console cycle saw the PlayStation 2 scoring a decisive win. Since it debuted in 2000, the machine has gone on to sell more than 120 million units worldwide and is the best-selling console in history so far. After overtaking Sega's ill-fated Dreamcast, which launched in 1999, it went on to fend off new rivals such as the Nintendo GameCube and the original Xbox, which both went on sale in 2001.

Part of the PS2's success was Sony's scoring of must-have console exclusives on the format--including Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the Kingdom Hearts series, and Final Fantasy X. Indeed, many people bought the console just to play Grand Theft Auto III and its two successors, Vice City and San Andreas, which all debuted on the PS2 before being eventually ported to the Xbox and PC.

In today's market, though, high-profile exclusives are fewer and farther between. Many developers are choosing to go multiplatform to recoup the rapidly increasing costs of producing games for the so-called "HD Era." These include traditionally PlayStation-focused Japanese publishers such as Capcom and Koei, which both have announced a strategy going forward to make all titles multiplatform.

What does the industry think? Which console has the best lineup of games this Christmas? Which is most likely to entice consumers to part with their readies? Will there be a console to rule them all?

THE PRICE IS RIGHT...AND THE GAMES

The Wii is the cheapest of the three systems at £179 ($250 in the US)--but its scarcity has led to massive markups on eBay. The PS3 and the 360 have both recently had price cuts, with the new 40GB PS3 costing £300 ($400) and the premium 360 costing £250 ($350). If you want top end, you can get the 360 Elite for £300 ($450) or pick up an 80GB PS3 in the US for $499 or a 60GB while they last in the UK at £349.

The Xbox 360, which has been out the longest, has probably the strongest 2007 holiday lineup, a fact that is somewhat to be expected. The library for the 360 is the biggest and currently adds up to well over 300 games. On the exclusive tip, the hugely successful first-person shooter Halo 3 generated more than $170 million in its first day on sale in the US and sold more than 5 million units worldwide by the end of November. The 360 also exclusively has the newly released sci-fi role-playing game Mass Effect, which has sold more than 1 million copies since its late November release, and the flight sim Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, which boosted 360 sales in Japan.

Following on into 2008 and beyond, exclusives coming up for the 360 include Lionhead's Fable 2, the psychological thriller Alan Wake, the real-time strategy Halo Wars, and Silicon Knights' sci-fi action adventure Too Human, which is due out at the beginning of the year.

The PS3 has the fewest games out at the moment, with around 160 titles currently on the market. Recent games, such as Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, have made a stir and have been joined by the recently released SingStar, which gives gamers access to the SingStore to buy new tunes. In North America, the just-released Unreal Tournament III will be exclusive to the console until next year (alongside its PC release). However, the console's biggest exclusives are arriving next year, and they include Ubisoft's first-person shooter Haze and the long-awaited swan song of Konami's popular Metal Gear series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The Wii has just under 250 titles currently out, including the critically praised bestsellers Super Mario Galaxy, RPG Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and WarioWare: Smooth Moves. Hot exclusives coming up include Suda 51's weird world of No More Heroes, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. However, two of the oldest games for the system--Wii Sports and Wii Play--remain among the top titles for the game, since they come bundled with the console and extra controller (respectively).

THE MAKERS SPEAK

Sony has had its fair share of bad publicity, which Sir Howard Stringer has called "unkind," surrounding the PS3. But according to upper management, those teething problems are now behind it. Stringer commented that the PS3 was "making a comeback already" and that production issues had been solved, adding, "We believe PS3, going forward, will be vital to our future and will succeed." The company also touts the PS3's powerful Cell processor as a plus to the system, along with the ability of the console to play Blu-ray movies at a price cheaper than most actual Blu-ray players.

Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand's head of marketing, Warwick Light, said that in comparison, the Wii was not actually a next-gen system. He said, "Look at the tangible differences between processing power and scope for scalability between the PS3 and the Xbox 360. It is clear that the PS3 is designed to last until the next generation... DVD is current generation. Why would you support current generation?"

Microsoft has argued that Xbox Live and Xbox Live Marketplace are two of the biggest reasons to go with its console instead of one of its rivals. Xbox Live Video Marketplace recently launched in the UK, Ireland, Canada, France, and Germany and is already going strong in the US, where a wide variety of TV shows and movies are available for download.

Last but not least, Nintendo claims that it is not involved in the console war at all, but is merely doing its own thing and going its own way. David Yarnton, Nintendo UK's general manager, said, "We are not fighting our competitors, we are fighting apathy... Instead of trying to improve technology for its own sake, we decided to focus on those who weren't even playing games, who weren't on the radar."

Yarnton thinks that the Wii is "inclusive, not exclusive" and that it will drive sales outside of the usual "teenage boys." However, one thing that may hinder Nintendo's home run this Christmas is that even if everyone wants one, no one can seem to find one on the shelves.

ANALYSE ME

So how are game-industry analysts handicapping the ongoing console war? Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities believes that the PS3 is going to come out ahead in this cycle--eventually. He explains, "I believe that the Blu-ray functionality built into the PS3 has greater value to a wider number of consumers than does Xbox Live or the fun factor of the Wiimote... Had all three launched at the same time and price, I think the PS3 would have been ahead from the beginning."

However, Pachter puts his odds on the Wii winning this holiday season, simply because of the price. He told GameSpot, "Wii will win this Christmas, because of price. Xbox 360 will finish second, and PS3 a not-so-distant third, again because of the price."

Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets agrees that the Wii is likely to have the merriest Christmas. He said, "For this holiday, the Wii clearly has a lot of momentum." He stated that the console will end up on more lists to Santa because of its cheaper price and strong marketing and because it reaches a broader market than "traditional" consoles like the 360 and PS3. He continued, "Clearly, many consumers are showing that they place a higher value on accessible and straight-forward gameplay and less on high-definition graphics and leading-edge processing power."

However, Sebastian doesn't believe that the race is predictable beyond the immediate future, and he thinks that at this stage any of the three consoles could still end up on top. He said, "It's very early in the cycle, so calling a winner in the console battle may be somewhat premature... Looking ahead to the remaining years of the cycle, we could see a more distinct segmentation of the video game console market. That is, Nintendo selling into a larger market of casual gamers, while Sony and Microsoft battle it out over the traditional core gamers. In terms of market share, I think it's safe to say we will see an even playing field versus the domination of Sony the last time round."

DEVELOPING

All three consoles have their fans and detractors within the industry. The platform that seems to have gathered the most opinions on both sides is Nintendo's Wii, which has been at the front of the firing line due to its runaway success. Electronic Arts was one of the first companies to come out and say that it regretted not supporting the format more heavily from the start.

John Riccitiello, EA CEO, commented, "[This transition has been] harder because of the complexity, and much harder because, unfortunately, we bet a little bit on the wrong horse in focusing so much on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and to a lesser degree on the Wii. And let me assure you that almost all of us in the industry made the same judgment. So after so many transitions of guessing exactly right, we got this one a little bit wrong, and we're dealing with that now with strong investments on the Wii."

Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada has gone on the record about his own opinion of the Wii. He believes the console has changed the gaming environment completely and called consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 "overengineered" and "too complex." He said, "There are too many specs--and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection, and a deep knowledge of gaming. These consoles are mismatched to today's environment. In a year or two years, they will fare better."

However, not everyone has been so kind about Nintendo's little console. Sega's US vice president, Scott Steinberg, said that he was "concerned about the depth of the Wii pool." The Sega executive expressed concerns that developers would run out of ideas and that the console might be just a fad. He said, "How much value can developers and creative folks get out of this wrist motion two years from now, or five years from now, or 10 years from now? The Wii will start to look really dated in a couple of years when developers get more value from the 360 and learn more about the PlayStation 3." However, Steinberg later "clarified" his statement by saying, "I'm not just putting the responsibility of innovation on Nintendo. It's on Sega and all the publishers and developers as well to carry that flag."

Possibly the most famous Wii skeptic is Developer 9 founder Chris Hecker, who gave his controversial opinion at this year's Game Developers Conference. He told the stunned audience, "Everyone loves the Wii. 'Oh, God, the Wii, we love the Wii so much...' The Wii is a piece of ****. Nintendo have uncovered the secret to Wii manufacturing. The way you manufacture a Wii is you take two GameCubes and some duct tape." He then continued on his tirade to accuse Nintendo of not caring about games as an art form and praised Sony and Microsoft for taking them seriously.

However, Hecker later issued a statement retracting his comments, saying, "I do not think the Wii is ****." Hmmm...

Gary Chambers, creative director at Introversion, told GameSpot his personal favourite is the Wii, because, "You can say the controller is just a gimmick or whatever, but I think it adds a lot to the console, and games like Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition are just fantastic. I can't imagine playing them on any other system. I'd love to develop a game for the Wii. I think there is incredible potential for some very unique games, even if it hasn't completely been realised by the industry yet."

However, the developer admitted that although he personally liked the Wii, the PS3 was, in his opinion, likely to ultimately win the war. He said, "The PS3 will win this generation, just as the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 did before it. The Wii is doing incredibly well all over the world, and the 360 got off to a great head start, but ultimately I think the vanity of the modern gamer is going to win out and the PS3 is going to be the console providing the best visuals. As soon as the price drops to a range which the average person can afford, I think we'll see PS3 sales skyrocket right past the competition."

David Jaffe, cofounder of Eat Sleep Play and creator of Sony's God of War series, is also cautious on the Wii, believing that although it is currently the console du jour, things could shift in favour of another very fast. He told GameSpot, "It's easy to say today who the winner is, and that would be Nintendo hands down. But you're starting to notice the winds are blowing in other directions these days. Whether these winds will be strong enough to shift the leadership position in the marketplace is hard to say."

Famed game designer American McGee is more secure in his opinion. He casts his vote decisively for the Wii and told GameSpot in an interview, "From the beginning of this most recent (re)cycle, I've had my money on the Wii. In my opinion, Sony and Microsoft didn't do anything truly innovative this last time around--just your standard hardware upgrade. The success they've seen with online downloadable content was, by their own admission, an unexpected fluke. But Nintendo made a distinct statement about what constitutes a games console, game controller, and play experience. In a sense they removed themselves from 'the war' and created their own playfield." As to second place, he thinks that will go to the 360. He said, "This is mostly because I think Microsoft established a strong early lead with sales and content, and Blu-ray will ultimately fail as a standard."

ALL HAVE A PLACE

A fair few people chose to sit on the fence and show love to everyone. Miles Jacobson, managing director of Sports Interactive, told GameSpot, "I think all three machines are really good, and all of them are going to have exclusive titles on them that you'll want to play... I'm very fortunate in that I've got all three consoles at home, and they all get played. The Wii tends to get played when friends who are nongamers come round, the 360 tends to get played by me, and the PS3 tends to get played by my mates who are gamers because they haven't got one yet... The real winner in the console war is the consumer--how cheesy is that? Well, as long as they can afford to get all three, I suppose."

Jonathan Smith, development director at TT Games, has much the same opinion. He told GameSpot, "The 'console war' is over, and the winner is gamers, who now have more choice than ever."

Turbine Games executive producer Jeffrey Steefel agreed, saying, "What's interesting with the consoles right now is that they're so different. In the past, the console wars have been perceived as just nine versions of the same thing. But they really are this time, completely different, and I think each one draws a different crowd... So now you've got stratification of the consoles, which I think is great for the consumer. It's never existed before."

Ed Daly, studio head at Zoe Mode, also prefers a diplomatic approach. He said, "I hope that across different territories and with different audiences, all three can compete healthily, which is good for consumers and good for developers... At Zoe Mode, we've worked with Sony on Sony platforms, and I've never bought into some of the negativity around PS3. With the likes of Home still to come, I feel the ambition and vision of PS3 could exceed a lot of current expectations." But for Nintendo, "The hard question is whether Nintendo's strategy and Wii software sales can continue to succeed over the lifetime of this generation. Personally, I hope it does."

'THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE'

Some developers think that the current system war will end in a stalemate, with no single format being named a clear winner, contrary to previous hardware cycles.

Denis Dyack, president of Silicon Knights, put the idea forward during his talk at this year's Leipzig Games Convention Developers Conference. Dyack explained to the audience that he believed it to be inevitable that there would eventually be a generic "video game machine," much the same way as there currently are DVD players.

Dyack called the process commodification, and he believes "all technology, under any circumstance, becomes commodified." He explained that there was no clear winner in this generation's system war and that this was leading to problems for developers. He said, "Nintendo has come out of the gate much faster than everyone anticipated, but how about longevity? The 360 is doing well in America, but not so well in Japan. The PS3 is off to a really slow start but they have a good brand name, so the truth is, no one knows... And trying to make a game on all three systems is very challenging, and I don't know many, if any, people that are doing that right now."

After his keynote address, several other members of the gaming industry admitted that they, too, would sleep easier at night if there were just the one console to contend with. Electronic Arts' head of international publishing, Gerhard Florin, also advocates a single, open platform and commented, "We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible." However, Florin thinks this is a ways off, giving the timeline as up to 15 years.

Katamari Damacy director Keita Takahashi also agrees, and he told GameSpot, "I want to see only one major console being retailed on the market, and everyone actually making games for just one console, and bring the price of that console down from what the three currently cost right now."

JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS

2008 looks set to be a huge year in gaming, with a wider range of choice open to consumers than ever before. Video gaming is no longer a niche industry, and its sales are making a noticeable impact on economies all over the world.

It remains to be seen which console will come out on top, or if different consoles will trump different regions, or whether all three will manage to somehow peacefully coexist. Perhaps, even, as Denis Dyack predicts, one day soon the term "system wars" will be irrelevant as a generic "video game machine" comes to market, and developers will have to worry about developing for only one platform, ensuring that everyone with that platform has access to every game.

I own the 3 consoles and their are 2 quotes I totally agree with "The Wii tends to get played when friends who are nongamers come round, the 360 tends to get played by me, and the PS3 tends to get played by my mates who are gamers because they haven't got one yet... The real winner in the console war is the consumer" and ""Everyone loves the Wii. 'Oh, God, the Wii, we love the Wii so much...' The Wii is a piece of ****." I love nintendo and I like my Wii but apart Wii sports tennis with the mates and a handful of other good games it has mostly served as a dust collector.

I do like all of them, but for me I tend to complete all the big Wii exclusives and then spend most of my time online with my X360. Other than that I use my PS3 to play old Final Fantasies and stuff. It's not that the system is bad, it's just I didn't have a problem with the PS2s back catalogue. Shin Megami Tensei games get a fair bit of time too. If I had to guess... I think the XBOX will have the edge by the end of next year.

As far as Im concened the PS3 is the only next gen console on the market. You cannot have next gen without an HD TV. When I got my PS3, I didnt have an HD TV and didnt think it was a big improvement from the PS2... but when I got my HD TV everything chaned... instantly. Just because Microsoft didnt have an HDMI output on their original 360, I believe that means that they are not even included in the next gen market. I believe its too early for the PS3 cause its still too early for next gen, but PS3 isnt going anywhere and will be ready when the world finaly decides to shift gear to real next gen. My PS3 is connected at 1080P with HDMi and optical to a surround system. It is connected wirelessly to the internet and I dont pay a penny. My online experiance has been wonderful so far... Now Im running a Full next gen setup.

I like the way they start off comparing the Wii in terms of hardware talk about miss the point. They current generation of hardware has almost been mastered so they can get so much out of it plus with the added functions of the Wii's remote its a lot more fun and affordable. With all this Hi-def and top notch graphics look how well mario galaxy did with just the current hardware. Me thinks it wasn't just the graphics that made this game a winner. I don't know why they go on about people being loyal to a perticular console as most people that are fans of games will probably have 2 maybe 3 of the consoles, i have a Wii, 360 and a Ps2 that doesn't make me loyal to anyone i just enjoy the games on all platforms. I do agree with the statement made about Sony's Blueray i dont think it will catch on all that well with dvd being the current norm and HD looking the more sensible choice for the future as it has more backing. Everyone is saying PS3 will come out on top because of its brand name but i think people are a little bit more noligable these days so i wouldn't bet to highly on it But we shall see...

I personally think that both the PS3 and the 360 both have equally amazing potential. The Wii... I'm not too optimistic about it. But I think that the 360 and the PS3 will come so incredibly close at the end of this "war" that a true victor will be hard to determine. But like those last few guys said, if there was only one system on the market (that had a good price) then I think it would benefit everyone. IMO, it would be cool if all three major companies come together and make one great console, tho I know that is a fantasy.

PS3 is the winner, The 360 is second, the wii is at the bottom The wii is all fun when you first get it, your like oh cool how fun, after while your gonna get bored of jumping around breaking your living room, and im sick of the Halo propaganda (you gonna worship microsoft soon, call Bill Gate your only god) I gave up on the consol war, i dont care about any console any more i invested in somthing better, a computer! I wanna know when the next generation is: the next generation will be the last or the one after that cause the games will then get to (real life grpahics) and once that happens what can you do to improve real life? well i Can experience 4d on my computer but i dont want to buy all the stuff, Soon we'll here about 64d, then 126 D ect ect Every time i see the PS3, 360 i want to play my sega or buy a nintendo 64 they were the best, had the best games a good remote and made playing with friends fun On time we staid up playing the N64 until like midnite playing golden eye 5 of use so we had to share a remote (u die you go off) i canoed the golden gun room :D I like gameplay over graphics!

i dont understand why everyone cares so much about high definition DVD output. all of us on this site bought our consoles to game, not to watch movies. Sure, PS3 will have slightly better game graphics than 360, but who really cares? I mean, how much better can it get? Its all about the games, and right now 360 and wii are way ahead. I dont care about blu ray. I want easy communication with my friends online, easy access downloadable content, and awesome games. I can get that from the 360. PS3 will fall short because online is shaky and games don't compare to the 360 (i dont care that its free, 50 bucks a year is something id pay in a second to get a good online service). most of the good games out are 360 exclusive or on both PS3 and 360. with wii, its an original and different way to game, and online that is comparable to xbox live will come in time. The sketicism towards its sucdcess has now vanished. I think nintendo is going to win in the end. I beleive that in the coming years Nintendo will make its online system as easy as xbox live, and they will make an attachment you can add to the console that will give it HD graphics for those who care. I don't dislike Sony, but i think they misread the desires of the market.

@ nintendokid Thanks for the response. The reason I took the time to post on here is the same reason a nurse teaches others to be nurses, one can only do so much, but as many we can accomplish great things. The ten min. I spend on here could get others thinking and then who knows what could happen. Thanks for the list of things to do this Holiday Season. I tell you what, I'll do at least one of those things instead of playing Assassins Creed and if you do the same we'll have added two more of the important things that are done this year. I'm not here to argure with you, just wanting people to think about how much time is spent on video games while people suffer needlessly. I would give you a list of all the things that i've done for my community but i doubt you really care. Know that i've done some and have much more to do. I'm not sure why you "hate people like me"? Odd...

It amazes me at the amount of hate directed at the 360 and anything Microsft related. I'm no fanboy but if it wasn't for Microsoft I would have probably left gaming last genreation. It also amazes me how people can forgive Sony for the 'read disk error' debacle for the past generation but will put down the 360 for it's hardware problems and at least Micrsoft didn't make you pay $150.00 to repair the system like Sony did-trust me I did it twice. I think all the systems will do well this generation, history proves that who ever makes it to 10 million first leads the generation and Microsoft has done that, but it has stiff competition from Nintendo and Sony. Honestly I think people will choose the system that has the games they want to play, for me it's Microsoft, but for somebody else it's Sony, and Nintendo for the next guy. Will Sony improve it's online? I hope so that way XBL will continue to innovate in the online arena, Will Microsft have a good 2008-yes, because it will push Sony to innovate in it's games, and the same for Nintendo. Last generation the fanboyism turned me off and I owed an XBOX and a PS2, this generation ifanboyiism is making it hard for me to buy a PS3, mainly because right now they don't any games that I want to play other than Warhawk and Uncharted, maybe Heavenly Sword and in the future GT5 and maybe Killzone 2 and their fanboys are freakin annoying, but so are all fanboys no matter which system they have, will they have more games that appeal to me I hope so, but right now I'm cool with my launch 360 and the second one with HDMII bought when my girlfriend bought my 40 inch Samsung.LCD. and the 28 games I have for them (man I haven't bought that many games ever) All I'm saying is we should respect all consoles because they are all great and it's all about choice which is good for the industry and for gamers. Right now I play online everyday with the same 12 guys since the first year of XBL, and I can't do without my voice/private chat in all games, custom soundtracks and all that comes with it, so I don't mind the 50 bucks a year. I love the games I have and the future games coming. Hopefully, I will make my PS3 purchase in the future, but I'm not gonna put it down because I prefer Microsoft. That being said Gamers lets enjoy the games and let the fanboyism die. Peace and good gaming

Ermm according to this i win too!!! the only consolee i dont hav is the Wii, but im thinking of buying it for my little bro for the hollidays. ;-) But seriously every one wins, people should seriously start talking about the games now, and just the games. Why does everyone always wanna be so 'ahead' of every one else (the black thing is better than that square white one! and vice versa)? people that wanna be so ahead are people that usually end up alone anyway. just step back a bit, look at the bigger picture and then talk about it to your friends and well other gamers (in a non hostile way). i bet you'll find your self in a happier place.. :p

Good point mitch, but what if you like MGS series, Halo series, Uncharted,Warhawk,Bioshock,Final Fantasy series,Mass Effect,GTA series, Call of Duty series, Gears of War, God of War,Ghost Recon series, Rainbow Six series and so forth. I love the Wii I have fun playing with my son all the time..but it's limited. No ONE system has ALL the games I want to try or experience.

I am a hardcore gamer and I own a Wii. I buy games for their game play, not the graphics. The Wii has plenty of games to satisfy hardcore gamers too. What about Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Plus you have M Rated games like Scarface, the God Father, Resident Evil 4, and Manhunt 2. I loved RE 4 Wii Edition and it is a lot more fun acting out the motions for the executions in Manhunt 2 than just pushing buttons. So I don't understand why everyone says the Wii is inferior because it doesn't have the processing power of the PS3 or the X-Box 360. I am a 27 year old married man and I have owned all of the older systems before these new 3 and right now I am not playing on buying any of the other 2. I believe Nintendo has made an excellent system and it will last, as it is great for parties and for families and it has games to satisfy the hardcore crowd too.

@rbop- True PC figured that out long ago, wish the developers for the console market would do the same thing. At least it would cut down the system bashing and get people back to the basics in talking about what really matters...GAMES! However, in knowing the human race there's always going to be complaining even if there's nothing to complain about! PS. I'm not much of a PC gamer, I have friends and family that are gamers that come over and it's much easier gaming together on a console. Besides my girlfriend doesn't let me nowhere it most of time, the funny part? The PC is mine...lol

I have a ps3 and love it. Most of the game I have are on more than one platform but I do love Ratchet and clank, Resistance, and Heavenly Sword. I also love the Blue-Ray player with my HD tv. Best of all is the fact that you can get blu-ray through netflicks at no extra cost. As for games that are not on ps3 like bioshock I got that for my PC and loved it. I don't really care who's first in the console wars. Either way I am happy with what i have.

I'm with rob3nelson. A universal format is possible. All it would take is a few major consumer electronics manufacturers to buy a license from a console maker. Nintendo would be the best bet, because Sony isn't going to give competition an edge (RCA, Panasonic, etc...) and Microsoft is too damn greedy. Nintendo only makes gaming devices, they don't have the resources to keep up with current demands. Nintendo also doesn't have anything else to fall back on. Sony can just focus on their other products. Microsoft can re-release XBox 360 titles on the PC, since they'd get a cut anyway: PC game makers have to get a lisence from Gates' crew as it is. Nintendo could lisence their technology out to other companies. They'd get a cut of the sales and could relieve the burden of manufacturing costs. They'd also get a cut of the software sales like they do now and can monitor the quality of games that developers want to put out. PS2/XBox/GC graphics are effecient, look at the Wiis success, the mass market is cool with it. .....look at NVIDIA, THEY DON'T MAKE THEIR GRAPHICS CARDS, THEY LISENCE THE TECH OUT TO OTHER MANUFACTURERS...

In the end it will come down to games. Sure the wii has great innovations and the PS3 has the most processing power, but if the games still aren't getting developed or the ones that are getting developed really suck then the console isn't worth crap. Ok maybe the PS3 would be even without games because of the blu-ray player and you can use it as a home theater system. Now i wouldn't call myself a fan boy of anything because until recently i never even owned a "next-gen" console. I have in fact played on all of them a fair amount though. And this is just my opinion but I feel the 360 has more games that fit my gaming palette. And the awesome live network makes it so easy to contact and play with friends all the time. The one thing i hated about the Wii was that i wanted to like it too much. I mean they have games like Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime, and Zelda. Those are games that classic hardcore gamers like myself could enjoy. But those are about the only hardcore games out right now, so I don't find it feasible to spend $250 on a console that I'll only buy a few games for. The Wii is fun in its own right though. And I always applaud innovation and a step forward.

I didn't exactly say Nintendo was ripping everyone off although I can see how you would get that perception. To those of us who are hard core gamers that may seem like the case. What you need to understand is that Nintendo didn't market the wii as much to the hard core gamers. Nintendo wanted to give those who do not game and casual gamers a jumping on point to the world of gaming with a system that is less intimidating than a PS3 and 360. To those the wii is an outstanding product. To those individuals power and graphics don't count as much. Basically they are doing for the gaming community now what they did in the 80's with the NES creating a new market. So now that they have a new market they can come back with another system that will be more powerful than the current generation PS3 or 360. This new system will cater to the Hard Core gamers. So they will have their new gamers brought in from the wii and the hard core gamers who want the next best thing. The most important element in all of this is timing. They do it too early they tick off the early adopters of the wii and loose those gamers. Bring a new system in too late (although it would still be the first released) people would be willing to wait for the PS4 and Xbox 1080 or what ever they want to call it. Timing was the 360's friend this time around and they would have had a huge lead even now but they didn't account for the ace Nintendo had up its sleeve.

Its all kinda a blind look as far as US goes. As to how the world actually is. I spent a few days after first reading this, really digging at more numbers. And when you look at it in every form. Microsoft's numbers in full, are bad! Sony are average, but rising pretty good. And Nintendo's are vary good. Now everyone seems to get the Nintendo is doing good part. And everyone seems to get the Sony is rising part. But somehow the Microsoft is falling a part thing, seems to get over looked. And its not just the red ring thing. You know besides the Halo month, they have been on a over 30% fall, month to month. And are just about dead in Japan. Oddyssey did not do anything in Japan as hoped. It bombed. And also you get these like sneak hopes. Like MGS3 was one. And you know their thinking Final Fantasy. The makers of FF 13 said the thought of a port was in basic stupid. That FF is not just the making of a game, buts its also dedicated to using the PS3 hardware only, and learning it. Because they were asked something to the effect of, are they making the game with any openings in its architecture to port. And they were like, no! I think where it changes latter, is when developer have to go to the next hardware,. Do to the fact that unlike last gen. The two systems just are not as close as one thinks. So its not as easy to make the same game on each one. And deals and stuff can only last so long, as the developers will start to lean to the new rising machines. I mean Micro did every deal they could, and are still going down , while the other two rise. Real fact is, it looks horrible for them over the next 5 years. But again. That does not mean the 360 will not be around. And it wont have it games. It just means they will finish last again.

I don't hate the 360, I just hate those who claim it is the best thing since sliced bread. Maybe my past comment would have many to believe I am a graphics whore, I'm not. I guess I was speaking out of anger, and was trying to make a point, but I blew it out of proportion and I'm sorry to any I have offended. I decided to go with the console(s) I chose, for it's games, and as i looked at 360's current and upcoming lineup I was not satisfied. I get system's for it's the games it currently has, and the games it will have in the future. As far as which is the best console for 08? Unknown, depends on the games and the response they get from consumers...us basically. To each their own.

@ johnmetcalf So basically you are saying Nintendo is ripping you off making you finance their next console by purchasing a rehashed GameCube? I find that funny, so in 2-3 years you would be willing to buy their "truely next gen" console? Even if it costs over $400 (heck that's a reasonable estimate if a GameCu....err Wii is sold at $250). Overall you are admitting they are ripping you off but it's ok as long as they give you a real next gen console lol. This is why I'll personaly never buy another Wii game again because what you say is probably more in line with the truth.

That is funny, who wrote this story exactly? Stating X360 has big titles such as Fable 2, the psychological thriller Alan Wake, the real-time strategy Halo Wars, and Silicon Knights' sci-fi action adventure Too Human.......LOL. Those are big titles, Fable 2 which was a horrible the last time, Too Human which I can't believe they count that in the same leauge as MGS4 (which they basically implied it was). I'm sure this story wasn't supposed to be skewed towards X360 but jesus.....the only big games you could think of for PS3 next year is MGS4 and Haze? Either you are biased or worse, a hack. Heck if you are going to mention too human you may as well mention Kill Zone 2. While you're at it, mentioning Fable 2 but no mention of Final Fantasy for PS3? No GT5 for PS3 next year? heck Little Big Planet is probably better than almost all the X360 titles mentioned there. I know people want to really try and spin next years X360 exclusive lineup as good but for the love of god, let's not start to get ridiculous and count games like Too Human as a must own exclusive.

I think that the PS3 has just had a rough start. MS pushed Sony to come out the gate before it was ready and it got bad publicity for it. Good job on MS for doing that to their competition. Nintendo is doing great with a family friendly console and games that are great for parties. However, the technology behind it was already getting old when it launched and 5 years from now it may not have such a strong following. I don't see the Wii lasting very long. Microsoft sure has some good games from 3rd party developers secured on their console. However, the RROD epidemic has caused too many problems for a lot of customers and those who experience a repair tend to experience more than one repair at some point. DLC costs more than it should. Microsoft has ignored a lot of requests for updates to the dashboard and opts instead to add additional content to Live that creates new sources of revenue for them. They also still have not permitted 3rd parties to create accessories for the 360. XBL is great, but $50/year does not seem to be justified with simply to allow online play. XBLA is okay, but the Virtual Console is better. Since MS wants hardcore gamers who have lots of cash to burn on stuff that people can get for free elsewhere, I place it in 3rd. The PS3 is starting to gain ground. There have been a few high profile games that have come out with high metacritic ratings. Their network is being continuously improved. They are bringing rumble back. They have the best processor for better physics and assistance on graphics. They have Blu-ray. They have built-in wireless (why $100 for wireless MS???). The PS3 is a better deal at $400 than the 360 when it comes to what you are getting for your money in the box and the price of the PS3 keeps going down. The Wii is great in many ways and is not hardly even competing with MS and Sony because it's in a different market. I see this one come close in 3nd place. I think, in the end, Sony will come out on top. They have all the potential and have been lining up exclusives and building their network. They have a worldwide loyal fanbase. There are tons of great games coming and now that Microsoft's early jump start is out of the way, Sony is able to get more developers to sign on to get their games on the PS3 (can anyone say Rockstar GTA V exclusive?). Blu-ray may not win the movie format war, but it makes for more opportunities in gaming and that's fine for me. I place Sony in first for these and many other reasons. ========= Of course, this is all a guessing game at this point. All companies have plenty of time to run marketing schemes that will make people feel like buying their console is the best decision even if it is not. Mainstream consumers buy what they hear about most. So the winner will be whoever can get their console talked about the most. Good luck to the companies! And may all the consumers make the right choice these next two holidays by picking up PS3's and Wii's!!!

Mercenary-73 said: "I hope 360 or ps3 win because why have a stupid bad graphic console like the wii if we are in new gen?" ---------------- I see you are still blind to the fact that gameplay means more than graphics. I have played both 360 and Wii games. Which are better looking, 360, which is better to play...Wii. What would you prefer, to go out with a supermodel that looks fantastic but has the personality of a fish, and is no fun in bed whatsoever or go out with a girl who is quite good looking and at the end of the day you will be having mindblowing sex? The former would make you think, "sh!t thats for me!" until you become bored. I want excitement, and fun. Not pretty pictures with **** gameplay. --------- Don't get me wrong, there are some excellent games for 360, but at the end of theday I find my wii experience to be more fulfilling. I am not hating on the PS3 or 360, at all, I just hate these retards that are like "Zomgz, the PS3 roolz, the 360 roolz, the graphics are teh best, Wii suxorz, graphics are teh crap" yaddy yaddy yah... Grow up and realise its not about the graphics. ----- Edit: Johnmtcalf, makes a great point, and I would love this to be the case. Fingers crossed it pans out like that. (ps, hardcore gamers just dont play 360s and ps3s, i am one and i prefer the wii, and i am not a fanboy either. the innovation appeals to me more than improved graphics, i think that is more "hardcore" than preferring better graphics in my opinion)

First of all I have all three systems so I am being totally objective on this. Alot of people have mentioned that the wii is not future proof. Honestly I do have to agree it does not have the horses under the hood to make a 10 year run like sony claims the PS3 will have, which I feel is a little bit exagerated myself. Anyway after reading this article the thought occurred to me that possibly Nintendo doesn't plan on the wii to be a long running system. I think they are using the wii as a stepping stone for their next system. It is a two phase plan to really corner Microsoft and Sony. 1st use the wii to pick up your casual gamers, Nintendo fanboys, and some people who don't play games at all while leaving the xbox and the ps3 to your hard core gamers this will generate alot of revenue to Nintendo to be used for Research and Developement. 2nd Release a new system at the half way point to 3/4 of the way through the life cycle of the 360 and ps3 that has more processing power than its competitors. Once this happens all of the wii users will want to upgrade plus your hard core gamers will buy in because it is a more powerful system plus it will be first out of the chute by a year to a year and a half because Nintendo caught sony and microsoft with their pants down. Thus putting a hurting on this generations gaming and quite possibly winning the next one by being the first to retail a new system. OK this is a perfect storme situation but a feesable one.
